When COVID-19 first started to affect the United States I remember in class checking the
John Hopkins tracking map when there were only a couple hundred cases here. Professor
Zagarins at the time told our class this virus had the potential to seriously affect the rest of our
semester, but we all thought that was crazy. Soon though the cases went from hundreds to
thousands, to tens of thousands, and now hundreds of thousands. When we saw the cases
increasing so fast class times started to be filled with only questions about COVID-19 and what
this meant for us. The night they announced we would have an extended spring break I realized
how serious this was and the next day I packed up my entire dorm. They did not say we wouldn’t
be returning after spring break yet but I live all the way in Arizona and I knew if we did not
come back there would be no way for me to come and pack my things, so I had to prepare for the
worst, which ended up being the outcome. I couldn’t even be sad or scared because I was so
overwhelmed and stressed over packing and midterms. From the night we found out about the
extended spring break till the next day when I boarded my airplane I had not slept, took two
midterms and packed everything I had to move back across the country. Once I was home things
got much worse with the virus and it officially became a nationwide pandemic. It took some
adjusting to doing work at home but both my parents were still working which minimized
distractions. My body was also still on east coast time so I was waking up three hours earlier
than I normally would have and this was extremely beneficial to my mental health and be as
productive in the day as I could given the circumstances. I think this pandemic has taught me
how to make the best out of whatever you are given and being quarantine is hard yes, but if you
give yourself a plan for each day and get into a routine it will be much more doable than you
might think. Now that classes have ended it is a little harder to fill my day and keep busy but as
of now the biggest difficulty is finding a job, just like everyone else I am sure. Things at home
are still almost all closed and what is open is fully employed basically everywhere. I think out of
this pandemic though we as a country will come out stronger, and hopefully wiser.
One thing I noticed here at home is how easy it is to get a test in comparison to other
states, this might be because we have a lot less cases per capita and maybe we have not hit our
peak yet, but I feel as if we have all needed resources available here. One thing that is
disappointing throughout this time is the amount of people who truly just don’t care about the
pandemic and aren’t taking it seriously. These people I feel are the ones that are going to prolong
the reopening and cause for a potential second peak. My biggest fear in that would be that we are
not able to return in the fall. I chose Springfield because of all it has on campus to offer and the
type of environment it is and it would be devastating if we could not return because of others
negligence in helping flatten the curve. With that being said I am also fearful of the return in fall
and what that will mean for spread of COVID-19. I believe this pandemic will affect the nations
population for years to come in the way we interact with others and how seriously we take our
health. I believe some have found this to be dramatic and will not change or do not care but I do
not believe that is the majority. I hope everyone was able to take something meaningful and
valuable from these hard times and hopefully make something positive come out of it.

Blessed Easter He is Risen! The Gift of Hope

Greetings,
Easter this year is different. Because of expert medical advice, we distance ourselves from each other. Even close
relatives or friends won't join us for Easter Dinner. We will miss them. We won't even go to Church physically. Yet, we do
have some opportunities to worship on-line. (See below.)
We had hopes for Lent. For the Semester. For Spring. Some of us could be anxious about the summer. Perhaps, with
reason. What will happen to our plans? For, we had hoped that...
Even, on the first Easter morning, the disciples are told not to be afraid. They are advised to "back to Galilee" and He will
see them there. Galilee is "code" for where and when they first met Jesus. They head to Galilee. They understand Jesus'
challenge to reflect on what about Jesus catches their imagination. As we also reflect on our "Galilee", what is
about Jesus that first attracted us to Him? For me, I am always moved that He accepts people; He doesn't judge people.
Pope Francis leads us in prayer: "Lord, you don't want us to be afraid. You, Lord will not leave us at the mercy of the
storm. Together, with Peter, we 'cast our anxieties on to you, for you care about us.'" (1 Peter 5:7)
Don't be afraid to tell Jesus our worries. About the pandemic. About everything. We long to meet Him again when and
where he first caught our imagination. Our Galilee. Can you hear Him call your name, again? What does He say to you?
An unknown artist (to me) captures compassionate and competent medical personnel attending to another victim of the
global pandemic, a modern day Jesus.
In this tapestry below, Raphael presents the power of the Risen Jesus conquering evil, death - and giving us hope.
The Risen Jesus, says "Peace. Don't be afraid." And, tell the others we will meet up in Galilee where we first met. Jesus
tells us to hope. Where do you think you would be able to hope again this Easter?

COVID-19
In January of 2020, word reached the United States about a serious deadly virus killing
Chinese citizens. In February, it reached Europe. Students were being abruptly sent home from
studying abroad, and everyone thought schools were overreacting. March 13, 2020, I left campus
for a two-week extended spring break. Little did I know I would spend the next three months in
isolation, not leave the house, witness the world shut-down, and have no idea as to when I will
be returning back to school. The Wednesday before spring break, Springfield decided to extend
spring break another week to figure out how many precautions needed to be taken in order to
ensure the safety of students. Seeing that I live in California, I was told to prepare for the worst
case scenario. I had to pack up my entire room, and all of my belongings with a 24 hour notice,
while in the middle of mid-term week. The next week, every sport, from high school, collegiate,
to professional, had their entire season canceled. Sure enough, the worst-case scenario happened,
and I still have half of my belongings (that I could not fly home with) sitting in my freshman
year dorm room. Leaving campus, me and all my friends were hopeful this would be a short
passing worry. Almost three months later, we are just hoping and praying we will be able to
return to school in the fall.
These times have undoubtedly become unmatched to one of the most difficult things I
have ever experienced. My life has changed very quickly in the past. I have moved across the
country two times now with no more than a two-week notice, and have started a completely new
life in a new place twice now. That was hard, but not like this. The most painful part of this
experience for me has been accepting the fact that I lost crucial times I needed with my team and
friends at school. I was having the best year of my life! I miss my friends and online school was
tough! The fear of not knowing when the world will open again. The fear of if the world will
ever become normal again. The fear everyday of the text I will wake up to saying that another
person close to me has been affected by this virus. Within the hardships, I think in order to
remain positive and present, it is crucial to see the bigger picture. We are saving lives. This time
is not about me and never will be. Everyone is spending time with their families that they could
not “find the time for” pre-pandemic. I have become so thankful for having such an amazing
team, community, and family. Another huge positive is everyone is getting puppies:)
My typical day in quarantine pretty must consist of me trying to stay as busy as possible.
I do my absolute best to not read the news, because that never makes me feel better, and if there
is a change I need to know, I am sure I will find out. I wake up pretty early to stay in routine and
usually will read until I decide to workout and train for volleyball, and then will watch whatever
netflix show I am binging, walk the dogs with my mom, or catch up with friends and teammates.
My family eats dinner together every night, and we are all at the point where we are beginning to
get annoyed with each other. There has been a lot of money spent on online shopping, and a lot
of time spent watching tiktoks (haha). When I had school, my schedule looked a lot different. I
was doing school work, or was in meetings for a majority of my day, and took breaks when I
could to get some fresh air, or move my body. These boring days have me wishing for those days
I was so busy I became overwhelmed, the team dinners, living with all of my best friends, and all
of the small little moments in between. I think I am speaking for everyone when I say this time
has taught me to never take those for granted ever again. I would give anything to eat subpar
dining hall food or take a cold shower wearing flip flops right now!
I think one of the scariest things to think about during this time has been the fact that we
are living through history. This pandemic will forever be studied in schools in the future. There
will be countless conspiracy theories behind this. This has changed the entire world’s population
lives. Every single human being walking this earth has been affected one way or another. That is
what blows my mind. One of the deepest fears is when emerging from this pandemic, that
citizens will live in fear for the future. I am fearful that there will be wars sparked over this. I
have huge hope that people take away some positive lessons from this experience. I hope people
stop taking hugs, handshakes, and being able to smile at a stranger without a mask covering your
face for granted. I hope people become more resilient. I hope that the fact that everyone
experienced this pandemic, unites people, instead of growing gaps and hatred. I hope people
remember how this time changed them.

This image consists of a desk that is used for school work as well as gaming. There is a schedule of online classes on the wall as well as a list of work to be done weekly. It is also very gloomy out which adds to the feeling confined part of the pandemic.
This photo might tell future researchers that during the pandemic students were inside most of time doing school work. They were swamped with work and were unable to do much all day besides work. This shows the experience of students as well as professors, because all the work the students have to do has to get graded by the professor. It is important to preserve this item because it shows how the trapped students feel, day in and day out about their work and social life.

Alana Gartenberg
As we approach 10 months of living in a pandemic, some part of me still can’t
comprehend that all of this is real. I remember starting my first spring semester at Springfield
College in January 2020, and people began to discuss the virus. However, at this point, everyone
more or less believed it would stay in China, and no one really took it seriously or thought much
of it. We all just went about our daily lives. When living on a college campus, it’s difficult to
keep up with the news unless you make an active effort to. Almost all of my news about the
virus was coming from Instagram, and most of the posts were memes. The majority of us didn’t
take this seriously until March approached. There were cases in the United States, and rumors of
a lockdown. With campuses shutting down across the country, it seemed that Springfield
College was next. That became official during a large meeting in the Dodge Room on the
second floor of the Union. It felt like the entire student body attended this meeting, with all of us
anxious to find out the fate of our semester. It was ironic to hear President Cooper talk about
how the virus spreads easily when we were all cramped in this room. Students were sharing
seats and many were in the back of the room standing. I was ignorantly happy when I found out
that we would be getting an extra week of spring break. I thought I’d get an extra week at home
with my family, and then I would be able to come back to finish my semester. No one could
have predicted what was to come.
Explaining this pandemic is challenging. I believe it means something different for
everyone. For some, it meant finally having some extra time to workout, spend time with their
family, start a new hobby such as baking, watch Tiger King, or practice self-care. However, for
others, it meant loneliness and sadness being isolated from loved ones. Many lost members of
their families, some not even having the opportunity to say goodbye. People lost their jobs and
businesses. For me, the pandemic meant many things. I was lucky enough to be one of the
people who started working out and took up baking. Although my sadness wasn’t as severe as
those who had monumental losses, there were still challenging times. It was hard not seeing my
friends and my boyfriend. Long distance relationships are hard enough without a global
pandemic going on.
For everyone, the pandemic meant adjusting and adapting to a new normal. Students all across
the country had to start using Zoom and other similar platforms to get their education. Everyone
had to get used to seeing loved ones living outside of their household on a phone or computer
screen. While the pandemic may not have tragically affected everyone, I guarantee that
everyone was affected in some way and had to adapt to a new lifestyle. There is so much gravity
to this pandemic: no matter how much you try to ignore it, as many do, it’s real, and it takes a
toll on everyone sometimes.
When I signed up for a Human Disease colloquium in spring 2020, I had no idea how
relevant it would be to today’s world. The first book we read for this class was COVID-19: The
Pandemic that Never Should Have Happened, and How to Stop the Next One. There were times
when living on campus was stressful and confusing, so it was nice to come to class every week
and not only discuss the book, but also what was happening on campus and around the country.
One of the most valuable things I learned is the importance of listening to scientists and
epidemiologists. The world was extremely underprepared for a coronavirus pandemic despite
epidemiologists saying since the SARS outbreak of 2002 that evidence pointed to a coronavirus
surfacing. Scientists have been warning for decades that this was going to happen, and if
government officials around the world would have listened, COVID-19 likely would have been
much less severe. Reading this book helped me realize that more needs to be done in terms of
preparing for all different kinds of viruses. Experts warned about lack of preparation, and the
few countries that did have pandemic plans focused solely on the flu when there are so many
other viruses, such as coronaviruses, that can and will emerge and put individuals in danger.
Even with these plans in place, many countries failed to stockpile or acquire even the most basic
essentials required to make the plans work. If a worldwide pandemic does not inspire future
preparedness, I don’t know what will. Something needs to be done because the effects could be
catastrophic if we do exactly what has been done in the past. I gained so much knowledge taking
this class, and all I can do is take what I have learned and try to educate those around me and
hope that countries will start taking pandemic precautions sooner rather than later.

On April 20th, 2020, my college writing class received an email from our professor. When I received this email, I had just woken up and did what I usually do every morning which is scroll through Instagram and look at all the emails I have gotten. I usually tend to brush emails from professors off until the afternoon, when I decide not to be lazy and do some work. For some reason this morning felt different and something told me I had to read my email. At the bottom of this email, my English professor wrote that she understood how overwhelming these times can be. she added that she was proud of all of us and the work that we are accomplishing. I chose this email because it shows that through this horrible time, people in the Springfield College community will always care even if they are struggling to and that's why Springfield is a true family and will always help others accomplish hard things in a time of need. To the future researchers and people out there, this will help them understand how it is to work together during a hard time from a far. it will teach them how to work together even if we are each miles away, because in todays generation no matter what, the phone and WIFI always works.

Has the pandemic affected the quality of education we receive?, is a question I often ask myself. As someone who loves to learn I am afraid that the quality of education I receive is not as good as how it was before Covid. How can the college ensure the students that they are being equipped in the best way through these strange times to become future professionals?

I chose this photo to represent our circumstances during the crisis we are in. The photo shows my brothers and I working from the dining room in our house tirelessly trying to get our work done online for our professors and teachers. This photo is meant to show how COVID-19 did not just affect the life of college students, it affected the life of all elementary, middle school, and high school students. Since the start of the pandemic we have been stuck in our home working on our computers for an average of six hours a day. Another tole is we are not able to see our professors or teachers daily like in a regular school day, taking away from that connection that helps to get points and ideas across.

The homemade masks show how we are facing limited resources for not only everyday people to protect themselves but for all the medical staff on the front lines to as well. This will help future researchers realizes the sense of urgency our nation and world were in for personal protective equipment to prevent the virus from spreading. People had to make homemade masks from scrap fabric because it was the only options due to such a shortage of equipment. It will help future researchers understand the lives of everyone who wanted to protect themselves and others from the virus. This item is important to preserve because it might represent what our future may look like going forward as a result of COVID-19, mask may be a part of our everyday attire. This specific item was made for my local fire department and their families by a local citizen, 75 masks were made in total so far.

Making Something More - A Quarantine Hobby
This year, we have all been faced with a challenge. We are stuck in our homes, away
from school, unable to go eat at a restaurant or even hang out with our friends. But we have
been given an opportunity. A lot of us have things that we have always wanted to do, but never
had the time. Now we have the time. So we have a choice: sulk in the sadness of our situation,
or make something more out of the moments. I choose to make something more.
As the semester reached its end, I realized that I was not going to have much to do.
Still recovering from surgery on my foot, going for runs was out of the question, so I needed
to think of a less active way to stay busy. With my birthday coming up, I asked my parents
for a guitar. I sing and play piano, which I still do in quarantine, but I wanted to try something
new. I have always seen people play guitar and wished that I could, too, but I never took the
time to learn. So for my birthday - well a few weeks before because it arrived early - I got a
guitar and began to learn.
Now, it has been around three weeks since I began playing, and I have already improved
so much. I started by learning the chords and playing them to songs I know. At first, I played
slow and choppy, needing a few seconds to switch chords and play the right ones. But now,
there are songs that I can play without even looking at the strings. I spend hours in my room,
on my deck, in the basement, or anywhere else I may feel like going to play my guitar. I learn
to play songs I grew up listening to, old classic songs from bands like the Beatles and Queen,
and new music on the radio today. I am mastering the chords and can feel the strumming
patterns like I was born to play. It has not even been a month and I already love my new skill!
However, I will not stop here. I may be getting better at chords, but my next challenge
is to learn the chords that I am struggling with. There are a few that I have not been able to
master, due to the complexity of them. Once I can play those, I will begin the process of
learning fingerpicking - which is much more difficult than strumming.
But for now, I will keep playing, learning, and finding joy in the circumstances. I won’t say
that it fixes everything, because it doesn’t, but it does help me escape a little. The time I spend
playing allows me to forget about everything else and just focus on the music. So while it is
still tough living through this pandemic at home, spending my time learning this new skill and
escaping into the world of music brings me happiness in these times. I can also Zoom with my
friends and play for them as I would have done if I was back at Springfield. What I have
learned most from learning this skill is how important it is to find the joy in the little things,
and to make the most of the tough situations that life throws at us all.

March 15, 2020
It is the 21st century. I've never been to jail, but this seems worse than jail. From living a
jam-packed normal life busy traveling back and forth to school in Springfield, MA, to work in
West Hartford, CT, back home to Waterbury, CT. I was keeping my sanity by going to Planet
Fitness and working out to feel good about myself and also take the stress off my shoulders from
college.
March 20, 2020
I was able to dress up, put makeup on, feel good about myself, while all balancing my
friend life and exploring our surroundings. All of a sudden, a virus broke out and became
destructive called Corona Virus. Not the bear, nor my old dog. It was a reality strike that gave
each human around the world a “new normal” way of living.
March 24, 2020
Colleges began to close down. Work began to close and only pay their employees for
three weeks. Malls and shopping centers followed to close down. Gyms began to close and
people like me do not have access to much gym equipment at home. All that is open is gas
stations, grocery stores, and restaurant curbside pickup. My parents began working from home,
my little brothers began doing school at home, and all their sports events were canceled. One of
my little brothers' birthday is next week and he has to make do with not seeing his grandparents,
friends, or having a birthday party. My trip to Miami in May was canceled, it feels like the end of
the world.
March 30, 2020
We all feel trapped. Watching the news and knowing how vaccines take years to create
never mind distribute. News channels are reporting that the amount of people affected by Corona
outweighs the number of hospital beds available for patients. It makes me scared. This "new
normal" makes me feel imprisoned. Every day I wake up waste my day away in the house by
lying in bed until 2 PM and then finally getting up to eat a late lunch and dinner. If I am lucky, I
can take a drive in my car to nowhere because nothing is open. I may also be lucky enough to
play outside with my brothers, but no one else though. It feels like a punishment. It's almost as
we did something that God didn’t respect and now, I have to go through this, but I do know a lot
of people feel like this. No longer wearing makeup and wearing the same clothes for two days
straight the only people I get to see are the ones living in my house. Not my grandparents though.
April 8, 2020
I find out my college graduation is postponed and there is a possibility that it can be
canceled. Why am I punished for this? Why did I pay thousands of dollars for an education
where I cannot even walk on stage to receive my diploma and be congratulated? Why work this
hard to get a degree and knowing Corona took over there is a possibility not many jobs have
openings because they are shut down and cannot pay their employees? Why do I always have
bad luck? Can I just wakeup already from this nightmare?
April 12, 2020
Even though I feel overwhelmed I know many people are finding the best ways to cope
with this pandemic. Communities are coming together. We are supporting small businesses and
ordering curbside pickup and banging pots and pans outside to let each other know we are here. I
am grateful my family members are healthy and safe because other people are going through
much worse. Other people have to deal with losing a loved one to COVID-19 and not be able to
say their goodbyes at the hospital or even have a funeral. I am appreciative to talk to my family
members every day and social distance to see them. This is a pandemic, but I know looking back
in a decade this is history.

Description
An account of the resource
This collection includes items submitted by students in the Health Science major who were enrolled in HSCI 325: Biostatistics, HSCI 340: Principles of Epidemiology, or HSCI 420: Evidence-Based Health Care in the spring 2020 semester. These three courses cover topics related to the distribution and determinants of disease, and in spring 2020 these topics were illustrated using examples related to COVID-19. At the end of the semester, students were given the option to contribute to this archive for extra credit towards their final project grade. To receive extra credit, students were asked to identify, capture, and describe an item that could be used as a primary source by future historians and researchers to study the experiences of Springfield College during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I wrote this story because not only do I want to write this historical information down, but I also want to educate others on such a historical event. No virus has ever had every state and business shut down, so I think having a piece like this provides stories in real time and not based off memory.

The year 2020 will be remembered differently by every person, but the one similarity will
be the Covid-19 pandemic. The biggest impact Covid-19 has had on my life was my decision of
where to go to college. I was originally planning on going away to school; however, that all
changed when I realized I might not be able to come home from school to see my family due to
Covid-19 restrictions. Covid-19 was the reason I decided to stay close to home and commute to
Springfield College instead of going away to school. My life was completely redirected from the
pandemic.
I never could have imagined starting college the way I did. Instead of having large
student gatherings, we had quarantines and were separated from our friends. Instead of
supporting our student athletes in person, we had to watch over zoom. Instead of getting to know
all your professors, we had masks where we did not even know what our professors and other
students really looked like. Instead of just having normal academic tests each week in our
classes, we also had weekly Covid-19 tests. This pandemic completely turned peoples lives
upside down.
Even though my first year of college may have been quite different than I imagined with
all the Covid-19 restrictions, I also gained a large sense of gratitude from this pandemic. I am
fortunate enough to say that I have not lost a loved one from Covid-19; however, I know for
most of the population that is not the case. I was still fortunate enough to be with my family and
to quarantine with them so even when we were socially distancing, we were still together. So
many people did not have this luxury of being with their family and have been separated from
them for over a year. This pandemic has really taught me to never take anything for granted
because you never know how fast everything can change.
Covid-19 also influenced the courses I took at Springfield College. Before this pandemic
I did not know much about world diseases; however, after living through Covid-19, I became
really interested in taking an honors colloquium course all about world diseases including Covid19. Learning about past infectious diseases as well as the one I was currently living through,
completely changed my perspective of virus outbreaks. I have realized that we may never get
back to “normal” or the way it was before Covid-19, but that is okay. Even though this pandemic
has been filled with hardships I think there is a lot of opportunity that has come out of it as well
and that is learning from Covid-19 to better prepare for the future.
The biggest takeaway I have from the honors colloquium on world diseases is that we
need to be ready and prepared for a future pandemic. We were warned by scientists that Covid19 was going to happen years before it did, but we did not plan well for this virus and that is why
we have experienced such a severe pandemic with long-lasting effects. If I could only take one
thing away from this course it would be that we are going to have future pandemics that may not
be in our control, but what we can control is how we learn from each pandemic and grow as a
country to be more prepared for each future virus outbreak. Covid-19 has been devastating and
so much has been lost from this pandemic, but we can also gain a lot from this pandemic such as
the lessons about how to stop future outbreaks, so we do not have to experience this loss again.
