Fresh Air When There's None Left
Description
An account of the resource
The images are pictures of nature and the outdoors, the water is running and the grass is swaying in the wind. The images are all things that I have personally taken while on hikes and backpacking trips during lockdown and the COVID pandemic.
In these images there are no people at all to be seen. This shows how quiet and nature is and how it differs from the world and the chaos going on during Covid-19.

Coverage

I chose these photos because during times that were very hard for many and still are, it shows that there is still peace and tranquility. These pictures show that the world is still beautiful and that there is so much beauty in the world. Even when it may not seem like everything is okay, going into nature and just experiencing fresh air, the plants, and the wildlife, to me it makes everything seem okay. Nature helps me forget about the world for a little bit and all the stressors that come along with it. It helps me feel calm and safe.

The title of my contribution is going to be how I trained in the woods. I think it is a simple title,
but it hammers home the message. The videos are all of me working out in the woods during
quarantine. All of the gyms were closed, so the only way to work out would be to go outside and
do whatever I needed to do. These woods would vary everywhere in northern New jersey. I
enjoyed switching up the scenery and keeping things new. I did everything from run to lifting
logs and punching football pads. My friend Jack was a great force in motivating me during this
tough time. We were both there for eachother to get better, and I do truly appreciate the time I
spent with him. Although my COVID experience was filled with a ton of mental hardship, these
were the experiences I remember the fondest from that year. Anything that was available to me
in public I used to better myself. The videos are of me and sometimes my good friend Jack. The
dates vary from April 2020 into that summer. My name is Casey Allen,
callen4@springfieldcollege.edu.
I really enjoyed looking into all of these archives over this passed unit. Although repetitive with
the questions taking a deep dive into things I would not have probably gotten a chance to look
into was pretty cool. My favorite part is looking into the Springfield Archive and seeing all the
different things that happened in our school's history. It was shocking to see how hypocritical our
humanics message is no offense to Springfield College. The way we handled segregation will
stick with me forever. I also loved the museum of suspended objects. It was really interesting
seeing different things get their meaning back after looking like simply junk. Shows that almost
anything can be made into an archive.

I chose this image because we were assigned to pick a moment from the pandemic that meant something to us. This image was taken last year at the start of my senior football season and the governor of my state Ned Lamont and the DPH made a decision that we could not play football while the pandemic was going on. The loss of my football season was one of the biggest moments of loss during the pandemic.

Description

The first image is a photo from the day of prom where myself and two of my best friends are smiling while we pose in front of the background full of trees. The spatial or temporal topic of the resource, the spatial applicability of the resource, or the jurisdiction under which the resource is relevant
I chose these two photos because I thought it captured the celebratory moments of the end of high school and the start to a new beginning at college. My prom was very exciting because we didn’t have it junior year so it felt like the final time that my friends and I would get all dressed up to go out and dance and celebrate the end of high school together. Whereas the photo taken at the house shows the excitement for freshmen year as we were on one of the final days of NSO so that meant classes started very soon and so did freshmen year. And even though it’s hard to tell, everyone is smiling in the second photo under their mask just like in the first photo, full of happiness and eagerness to start a new adventure. Furthermore, I made many friends from my NSO group and so the comparison to four months ago where I only had two friends helps to depict the progression of growing up and going to college with no one else I knew, all on my own to having a group of friends. Therefore, the smile on my face was pure bliss that just like in high school I will find my friend group and be alright. It’s very hard to see my growth over the months but I believe these two photos help to show that my progression from teenager to adult is starting to bloom even during the unfortunate circumstances of COVID that I believe halted some of the progression from lack of being able to go out and experience life.

I chose this video because of how accurately it represents the way the pandemic made me feel. This video is not to portray that people getting sick and dying and our health being at risk was paradise but more so that my mental state at the beginning of the pandemic was one of relief. To write this sentence does fill me with guilt but I have to admit that waking up and not going to school, or work, or worrying about anything was very peaceful. I felt in tune with myself and able to take care of myself in a way I hadn’t been able to in a long time. However, as the saying goes, “too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.” This was the case for the covid pandemic, overtime my days became very repetitive, online learning was extremely stressful and I felt trapped and stuck in my own home. I could not actively work on my goals and once 2 weeks turned into a few months I was ready to go back out into the world and for everything to go back to normal. The COVID pandemic taught me that we take the little things for granted and I've become a different person overall since the pandemic. Instead of forgetting my mask all the time like I did at the beginning, I now ask “do I need a mask?” before entering a building.

Cross country during COVID times
Description
An account of the resource
This picture was taken when COVID was really bad so we had to run with masks. Although wearing masks while running was safer for everyone, wearing one while running was absolutely miserable. It seemed so much harder to breathe when wearing a mask. Thankfully we were allowed to slide our masks down when we were ten feet apart from someone else but if I wanted to catch up to someone, I would have to slide my mask back up. This was extremely hard because to catch up to someone you had to run faster which meant you would breathe harder. Wearing a mask while catching up to someone was the most miserable feeling. I felt like I could not run as fast with it.

The spatial or temporal topic of the resource, the spatial applicability of the resource, or the jurisdiction under which the resource is relevant
Due to the lockdown that started in March of 2020, many people around the world had seen their lives slow to a crawl in a matter of months, including my own. And as the lockdown persisted, I saw many people either going into a more recessive state or using the newfound time to themselves to better themselves and learn new skills from cooking, drawing, making clothes, etc. At the time of me seeing this I had to make the choice of which way I would go with using my time. I had thought long and hard about what I was going to do until I had realized that I wanted to hone my skill of drawing. Throughout the lockdown I would interact with many forms of art from anime and manga and made art referencing the ones that had changed me as a person and allowed for me to prosper. In addition to this I had told myself that I wanted to inspire others to change their life and pursue their passions through the hard times, and so, anytime I would make a piece of art I would post it onto my instagram page with words of encouragement alongside my own thought process at the time of making it. These photos in the contribution make up some of my favorite works that I had made during the lockdown and only make up a small portion on the total works I made.

I chose this email as my contribution because receiving this email went against my beliefs. No one in my household was vaccinated and I didn’t believe in taking the vaccine because during the two years Covid 19 started I didn’t get covid, so I didn’t see the purpose for getting the vaccine. The vaccine doesn’t stop you from getting covid it only helps with symptoms and my parents and I both were against the vaccine and they didn’t want me to take it either. However, in order to come on campus and live on campus it was required. In conclusion I thought that using this email would show how Covid basically made decisions for me and I didn’t really have a say in that decision even though it was my personal belief because I didn’t have a medical or religious exemption.

Why did I choose this photo: The reason I chose this image is because it is the location where I had to sit for approximately four hours, now let me tell you why. Due to COVID-19, to attend Springfield College, all students must have had their second vaccination dose two weeks before arriving on campus. For me that was not the case, I received my second dose about a week before arriving on campus. It had been a few days before move-in day. Springfield had sent an email out about students that had not been vaccinated for a full two weeks where required to show up on campus with a negative test result. I had been pretty excited about moving in and assumed that I had completed everything I needed, so I really didn’t pay much attention to that email. I had arrived on campus to the testing station and they explained to me that I needed a rapid COVID-19 test. They gave me a location that did rapid tests. Well it wasn't so “rapid”. My mother and I arrived at Urgent Care and they explained to us that there is a three hour wait because of how many other people were there for tests. I could imagine students from surrounding schools had the same issue which is why the wait was so long. Nevertheless, my mother and I waited three plus hours in the parking lot. I ended up missing the first day of the New Student Orientation due to the long wait for a rapid test and moving my things into my dorm room.

Kajander Jay- pandemic pasts
The pandemic was a different time for all of us but my unique experience with it will be
something I remember from the rest of my life. For the most part people did not like quarantine
or the meta that came with covid but for me i enjoy every second of it for many reasons. Throw
back to march 13th 2020, it was a Friday for me at Reading Memorial High School in Northeast
Massachusetts. It was a normal day and the memes of corona spread like wildfire and we all
took it as a joke until we found out the school for all of next week was canceled due to “deep
cleaning”, one thing led to another and that 1 week break turned out to be something like 13
weeks. Lets fast forward to summer when the majority of the events took place. Near May or
June I built my own gym in my garage and it was a bitchin 'setup, over 300+ lbs of weights, a
squat and bench rack made out of timber stuck in concrete contained in buckets. It was enough
to make a teenage jock cry. To me the best part of the days came in between sets when I would
hit my bong and proceed to make the most of my days of doing nothing. I was getting better and
enjoying it at the same time. Early summer I also picked up a job at my local grocery store
called Market Basket. I stocked shelves in the middle of a pandemic for 3 months then called it
quits. I came out with a solid 1500$ and spent nothing and saved it all. As the pandemic started
to diminish I started my senior year of highschool through a computer, that lasted for almost 5
months and I only returned to in person learning for the last month of my senior year. What an
end to highschool.

I chose this string of emails because I feel like in the future masks won’t be something that’s thought about nearly as much as they are now. Seeing how important and absolutely mandatory they were to allow us to go to school might be shocking and interesting to some people. Personally I thought masks would’ve been a thing of the past by now, but with the pandemic still in full swing, they’re still mandatory. We’ve been wearing them for such a long time that it’s become part of the routine to even leave my room. I’ve gotten used to every email including “wear your mask”, so it’s not bothersome anymore, just discouraging that it’s lasted so long.

The reason I chose this video was that it was the best shot I had hit so far in my experiences golfing and the feeling I got was one of if not the best feeling I had felt since covid began. My mental state in covid wasn’t in the best place. Golf helped me clear my mind and it gave me a feeling of pure love and joy when I was out on the course. Golf gave me a chance to forget about the issues in the world and just enjoy life.

Kids on a hike
Description
An account of the resource
My submission is all photos of the outdoor memories I created with my buddies over covid. The bonds I created as a result of these trips are friendships that will last a lifetime, and I am so grateful to have met them in my life. Covid was dark for all of us in some way. Being away from my group of people for an extended period sparked my curiosity. Everyday I asked myself: how can I get outside and be with my friends while still having a good time and being safe? For a long time nothing was possible. Then, while I was scrolling through reddit, I came across a thread related to backpacking. I then proceed to wonder what a backpacking trip with all my friends would look like. Moments later I was texting them all about it, and 2 months later we’re in Yosemite exploring Angel’s Landing. These photos mean much to me because of the memories they have attached to them. I can confidently say that I wouldn’t be the person I am today had I not gone on that trip. Backpacking was an experience that brought us all together so much closer then we could have ever thought of. It is crazy to think that such a small thing can have such a large impact on life.

I chose to contribute this picture to the Springfield College Archives because the resting mask on James Naismith’s neck represents the forward progress the Springfield College community has made in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it doesn’t show full compliance to city/school mask mandates, Mr. Naismith is still technically following the rules because he is outside, and I believe he would have been fully vaccinated by now! This image is and will be relevant to every Springfield College student and staff member that was a part of campus life during the current COVID-19 pandemic (past, present, and future). This is right outside of the Springfield College Campus Union, the center of campus, where almost every individual on campus will pass by at least once a day. By complying with city and campus mask mandates, Naismith (and SC staff/students) is thoughtful of policy/leading by example, empathetic when keeping in mind that wearing a mask protects EVERYONE, and is trying to avoid going back to “Zoom University” or being sent home yet again.

HNRS 192: Infectious Disease in the 21st Century
Emilee Gebhart, Class of 2023
The Longest Year in History
The day we evacuated Springfield College over a year ago already feels like a lifetime
ago. I consider the early days in 2020 where we took family walks every night, met up with
friends in parking lots, and bought gas for $1.00 a gallon to be a different life than the days of
late 2020 into early 2021 where I attended college during a pandemic. I had never lived through
so much panic and unknown that I did from March through the summer of 2020—nobody knew
anything. And then when we did figure some stuff out, not everyone agreed nor listened. There
was a lot of doubt casted on science and on the government. Unfortunately, information about
coronaviruses had already been previously known. I say “unfortunately” instead of “fortunately”
because we’ve had outbreaks of coronaviruses (SARS, MERS), yet a pandemic was still able to
break loose. From reading the book in this class, Covid-19, The Pandemic That Never Should
Have Happened and How to Stop the Next One, and various textbooks for my other classes, they
all mention the concern with coronaviruses. All the information and precautions were there about
the exact crisis that has happened. It has been a frustrating year, needless to say. The biggest
lesson to take from this is to be serious from the start. Even 100 years ago during the Spanish
Flu, the handling of viruses was by hand washing and isolation, which has been the core of
handling Covid-19. The information had been there all along. This class constantly tackled the
question of “will we learn from this pandemic?”, and the only answer I can give is hopefully,
because there is more to come whether we are ready or not.
As a future healthcare provider, I have been eager now more than ever to start making a
difference and helping people. As much as I will have a duty to protect from harm, the people
also have a duty to protect because we are all in this together, so it is important to listen to the
science and take the proper precautions. The pandemic has personally tested my limits in social
and academic reasons. I am fortunate that my family, friends, and I have made it out strong, and
it is all more reason to keep our heads held high and to take care of one another.

An account of the resource
This document reflects on the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic. This past year has been a difficult time to live through for people of all ages, and while there are many different stories I can share, the most important part is to remember this as a learning experience for future situations. This archive is important to keep the legacy of Covid-19 alive so I hope the personal experiences from my classmates and I can help to paint the picture of the various lenses.

The year 2020 will be remembered differently by every person, but the one similarity will
be the Covid-19 pandemic. The biggest impact Covid-19 has had on my life was my decision of
where to go to college. I was originally planning on going away to school; however, that all
changed when I realized I might not be able to come home from school to see my family due to
Covid-19 restrictions. Covid-19 was the reason I decided to stay close to home and commute to
Springfield College instead of going away to school. My life was completely redirected from the
pandemic.
I never could have imagined starting college the way I did. Instead of having large
student gatherings, we had quarantines and were separated from our friends. Instead of
supporting our student athletes in person, we had to watch over zoom. Instead of getting to know
all your professors, we had masks where we did not even know what our professors and other
students really looked like. Instead of just having normal academic tests each week in our
classes, we also had weekly Covid-19 tests. This pandemic completely turned peoples lives
upside down.
Even though my first year of college may have been quite different than I imagined with
all the Covid-19 restrictions, I also gained a large sense of gratitude from this pandemic. I am
fortunate enough to say that I have not lost a loved one from Covid-19; however, I know for
most of the population that is not the case. I was still fortunate enough to be with my family and
to quarantine with them so even when we were socially distancing, we were still together. So
many people did not have this luxury of being with their family and have been separated from
them for over a year. This pandemic has really taught me to never take anything for granted
because you never know how fast everything can change.
Covid-19 also influenced the courses I took at Springfield College. Before this pandemic
I did not know much about world diseases; however, after living through Covid-19, I became
really interested in taking an honors colloquium course all about world diseases including Covid19. Learning about past infectious diseases as well as the one I was currently living through,
completely changed my perspective of virus outbreaks. I have realized that we may never get
back to “normal” or the way it was before Covid-19, but that is okay. Even though this pandemic
has been filled with hardships I think there is a lot of opportunity that has come out of it as well
and that is learning from Covid-19 to better prepare for the future.
The biggest takeaway I have from the honors colloquium on world diseases is that we
need to be ready and prepared for a future pandemic. We were warned by scientists that Covid19 was going to happen years before it did, but we did not plan well for this virus and that is why
we have experienced such a severe pandemic with long-lasting effects. If I could only take one
thing away from this course it would be that we are going to have future pandemics that may not
be in our control, but what we can control is how we learn from each pandemic and grow as a
country to be more prepared for each future virus outbreak. Covid-19 has been devastating and
so much has been lost from this pandemic, but we can also gain a lot from this pandemic such as
the lessons about how to stop future outbreaks, so we do not have to experience this loss again.

“Stay Home, Stay Safe”
Molly Coates
HNRS 192
May 2021
“Save a life, wear a seatbelt”, “A text can wait”, “Lane Closed →”, “Testing, Testing”.
Often in our lives, we drive past electric road signs. Driving down the highway can often be
seemingly mindless, yet a shining bright sign has the ability to entertain us, even if it is for a
fleeting moment. Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself driving down I-91 South
to my dad’s house. The sign that I passed that day said: “Stay Home, Stay Safe”.
March of 2020 found me blissfully ignorant halfway around the world. Fresh off my
landing at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand it was only a matter of time before
everything flipped upside down yet again. As emails warning of a spreading infectious disease
filled my Springfield College email, the Kiwi lifestyle remained “normal”. Numbers abroad
grew, and it was not long after that we heard of the evacuation of Springfield College students
being evacuated from European nations such as Italy and Spain. Next came the seizure of various
study-abroad programs and friends and flatmates would vanish within a day's time. Eventually,
the national 48-hour Emergency Effect solidified the need for action. The seemingly simple road
sign of “Stay Home, Stay Safe” tore my conscious in two directions over nine thousand miles of
distance.
I would end up leaving New Zealand to return home. I would be accompanied by my
brother who had been evacuated from his position in the Peace Corps to return home to Norwich,
Vermont. Gradually, we both settled into the “new normal” of the COVID-19 pandemic. Days of
nothingness would fly by. The same activities, wake up, walk the dog, breakfast, and clean your
room for the fourth time that week. Occasionally, I may have picked up a book or completed a
puzzle. Yet it was not the abrupt stop of daily life and the consequential monotony that
characterized the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the moment of shock and absurdity could occur
at the simplest of moments. While enjoying your brainless TV or movie programming you may
ask yourself, for just an instant: “Why aren’t they wearing masks?”
In the Fall of 2020, I decided not to stay home. Going against the advice of the shining
road sign I packed up my belongings and traveled back to Springfield College. As the year
progressed I signed up for the course HNRS 192-26 World Diseases. Gradually the brain fog of
the past year began to lift. Time allowed a logical sequence of events to explain what happened
to the world. Yet, as a human race, we cannot simply wait for the recap of events if we hope to
survive. While I enjoy the study of the past, I must acknowledge that there will be no future
unless we look forward. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted innumerable divisions and
disparities in our national and global society. If further collaboration and communication are not
demanded, this will not be the only pandemic in my lifetime. Let us all hope that we never
“return to normalcy” because if we do, we are merely doomed to fail yet again. Now is the time
to act. We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but repeating history is no longer an option.

Covid 19, A Lesson Learned
The Covid-19 pandemic has progressed much further than it ever should have been allowed to.
As we approach six hundred-thousand deaths in the United States this fact becomes increasingly
important as small decisions such as making testing available, shutting down transportation, and
simply mandating masks could have made an immense difference. A common argument made in
favor of several world leaders is that a pandemic is not something we were expecting or have had
to deal with in the past. This argument is false, the fact is scientists have been warning us about
SARS, Coronaviruses, Bird flu and other pandemic level pathogens for several years now. We
also have had several outbreaks of epidemic and pandemic level pathogens in the last century
that have been managed and stopped early on. While Covid-19 was in many ways a perfect
storm for a pandemic due to its high transmission rate, it could have been less disastrous had we
listened to science.
If I could share one lesson I have learned from this pandemic, it would be to listen to
science. I often reflect on the ways in which I followed the rules of the CDC, the ways I could
have been safer, and the things that were out of my control. Over quarantine I worked at a
grocery store where some customers reacted to the disease with ignorance and nonchalance,
while others were terrified, and visibly so. Both sides of the spectrum came with a unique set of
issues that were up to myself and my coworkers to solve. Had we as a nation listened to science
instead of concerning the profits of million dollar corporations then places like supermarkets and
other essential businesses could have been made safer and as a result lessened the global panic
that resulted in shortages of resources.

Whether it’s cancer or COVID-19, the disconnects are the same
By Roberta Martone Pavia
When the world came to an unprecedented halt courtesy of the coronavirus, my family was
that small minority celebrating. Sort of. Just as the pandemic hit, we got the results of our
daughter’s PET scan after almost two years of wrestling with a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma diagnosis.
The scan came back clear, and we were euphoric.
However, as soon as we got into our car after leaving the oncologist’s office, our 19-year-old
burst into tears. “Are you kidding me? What now? What if I get the virus? What if I die from the
virus instead of lymphoma?” The questions were grimly ironic. It was an all-too-familiar
scenario that brought us back to the previous year when Justine was quarantined after her
STEM cell transplant. It didn’t matter that she had successfully overcome regimens of chemo,
radiation, immunotherapy, and the transplant. Never mind that she had already bested a twomonth house quarantine, missed long-planned trips with friends, and delayed her freshman
year at college. Despite having successfully navigated those obstacles, our daughter was now
worried about the possibility of contracting a deadly virus after having battled cancer, and she
was petrified.
I tried to console Justine, reminding her how she had already been through something similar.
“You’ve got this,” I said. “You know what it’s like to be isolated from everyone but mom and
dad. At least now you won’t be the only one who is stuck inside.”
I recalled how what seemed impossible soon became routine last winter: spraying and wiping
down every surface with anti-bacterial solution, pouring bleach down every drain, wearing
gloves every time we touched food. Receiving care packages on our doorstep—our only means
of appreciation a muffled “thank you” through the mail slot. As a family, we all felt the
disconnect of not being allowed to dine out at restaurants, order take-out food from our
favorite burrito place, or eat homemade baked goods from friends who just wanted to offer
comfort. We were experiencing a kind of isolation none of us had dealt with before. However,
back then, we also knew it was temporary.
When Justine was finally allowed to have friends over, those visits took on a routine of their
own, too. We had to make sure her friends weren’t harboring colds or flus and insist they wore
gloves and masks. They couldn’t eat or drink anything, had to stop by in small groups, and keep
their visits brief. After a few awkwardly humorous moments, for instance, when Haley couldn’t
figure out how to put on the surgical mask, or Sophie discovered her hands wouldn’t fit into the
disposable gloves because they were much larger than the average teen, her friends connected,
solidifying a bond that in some cases had been forged back in pre-school. For others, it was the
cementing of relationships that began in high school. Classmates, dance team members, and
friends from the Italian Exchange Program at Newton North.
I welcomed the bursts of laughter that erupted from our family room during those visits and
tried not to listen in like a nosy mom. From the snippets I did overhear, I learned that their
conversation, too, was pretty routine. They talked about the stuff many 19-year-olds talk about:
college, clothes, boys, girls, parties. Even with the requisite facemasks, they found ways to
communicate. Those conversations about normal everyday things were part of what got
Justine, and us, through a tumultuous time.
Today, it’s a consolation of sorts that we have been able to adopt those same routines to help
us stay connected during COVID-19. Seven-plus weeks into the pandemic, all of us are learning
how to find new and unusual ways to reach out—virtually, vicariously, and at a distance. Just as
we did with friends and family during our daughter’s cancer treatment. Once COVID-19—and
our struggle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma—is behind us, our hope is that some good will come out
of these unprecedented times. That we’ll have discovered new ways to connect with each
other. And, that these new connections will somehow make us better, stronger, and ready to
move forward into the new normal.
