James Naismith - inventor of basketball
Subject
James Naismith
Description
statue of James Naismith sitting with a basketball hoop outside of the Springfield College Richard B. Flynn Campus Union
Coverage
I chose to contribute this picture to the Springfield College Archives because the resting mask on James Naismith’s neck represents the forward progress the Springfield College community has made in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it doesn’t show full compliance to city/school mask mandates, Mr. Naismith is still technically following the rules because he is outside, and I believe he would have been fully vaccinated by now! This image is and will be relevant to every Springfield College student and staff member that was a part of campus life during the current COVID-19 pandemic (past, present, and future). This is right outside of the Springfield College Campus Union, the center of campus, where almost every individual on campus will pass by at least once a day. By complying with city and campus mask mandates, Naismith (and SC staff/students) is thoughtful of policy/leading by example, empathetic when keeping in mind that wearing a mask protects EVERYONE, and is trying to avoid going back to “Zoom University” or being sent home yet again.
