A School Year of Disappointments

Senior year. The last stretch before really being considered an adult. I was beyond
excited. We were finally allowed to eat outside during lunch, come in late if we had a study, got
the good parking spots up front, we could even have coffee which was very important on the
days that dragged on. I was most excited for friday night football games under the lights,
standing on the sidelines with the rest of my team and winning the homecoming game. But that
didn’t exactly happen. EEE took away the lights from us and almost took the whole season with
it. Luckily we played through. We didn’t know it yet but those days were the very start of the
curse of 2020.
In December, word of the so-called “Coronavirus” started spreading through the media. I
can remember seeing a bunch of different memes about it but not thinking anything of it
because it was so far away from us all the way in China. Then by the end of January things
started getting serious. January 20th, ten days before my 18th birthday, the first Covid case in
the U.S. was reported. I was terrified. All the jokes we made about how it could never get here
came back to haunt us. This was really happening. We managed to survive February in my
town. All was going well up until the middle of March when a guy from the high school a town
over was confirmed of having it. It was the week before March Madness Spirit Week which was
HUGE at my high school. It was also the week of my final football banquet and the beginning of
practices for the lacrosse team. On March 13th my world stopped dead in its tracks. At the end
of that day there was an announcement and I remember it clear as day, “The high school will be

closing down for two weeks for safety reasons. All students should bring home books and
supplies necessary to complete homework for said time.” We were so excited because we got
an extra two weeks off from school and when we came back, there’d be one week of class and
then April Vacation. However that turned out not to be the case. Two weeks turned into three,
then four, and then the whole rest of the year.
That announcement was just one of things that caused my world to crumble. Right after
school ended, I was in the band room for the weekly Tri-M Music Honors Society meeting and I
got a text from my dad; “Call me - we need to talk.” I don’t know about anyone else’s dad but
when I get texts like those it's never a good thing, especially when it's two o’clock in the
afternoon and I know he’s still at work. I left my meeting early because I knew this had to be
important. For a little background, my parents are divorced and have been since the beginning
of my freshman year of high school so I’d only get to see him once every other weekend. I,
having always been my dad’s little girl, took it really hard at first and still struggle with it to this
day because we’ve always been so close. At the time he asked me to call him, he was living in
my grandmother’s house and was taking care of her because she got knee surgery and couldn’t
walk around the house yet and had just beaten cancer a few years prior. When he answered the
phone, I could tell he was already choked up. He tells me that because of the Coronavirus
shutting down schools and because Mimi’s immune system was still very weak, I couldn’t come
over to see her which also meant I couldn’t see him either for at least a month. The news hit me
like a bus. I started tearing up immediately because that day I was supposed to see the both of
them. It was hard having the one thing you were looking forward to all day be the thing that got
ripped away from you in an instant. I got off of the phone and it took everything in me not to cry.
I felt like the world stopped and everyone was looking at me. There was so much that happened
within an hour and I couldn’t control it and it was killing me. I just needed a hug.
Then quarantine happened and my mental health took the biggest hit. I became
extremely unmotivated and didn’t want to do anything. I holed myself up in my room and didn't

do anything except my online classes/homework, sleeping, eating, and watching Netflix. My
body started to feel so weak because I would barely move from my bed. I went from dancing at
least two hours everyday of the week and weekend in the studio to only an hour every other day
of the week. Dancing became my outlet for my emotions. On Wednesdays we’d have a
combination class where my teacher would teach 2 8-counts of a combo and let us improvise
for the rest of the song. The songs would always be in the contemporary style so every week it
was like I got to write down my feelings on a page except it was my body writing words on the
walls of my bedroom. Dancing was one of the things I missed the most. The girls on my team
are some of the closest friends I’ve had and it took a huge toll on all of us when we found out we
weren’t going to have a final competition season. I didn’t hang out with my friends, although I
really wanted to, because I wanted to see my dad and grandmother. It was one of the only two
things keeping me somewhat focussed on school. The other was I knew if I failed any of my
classes I wouldn’t get to graduate.
Fast forward a few months through quarantine, online schooling, and LOTS of Netflix, it
was almost June which meant I finally got to graduate. I had been waiting for this day for four
years. Our school was very hesitant about letting us have a ceremony because there were 169
kids in my class. The administration settled on a drive-by graduation where we’d drive up to the
front of the school, take our diploma, walk to the center of the small stage, switch our tassel,
take a picture, and leave. I was somewhat thankful that we didn’t have to sit in the sun for hours
like we would have if it was completely normal but it wasn’t great either. I was just happy it was
over and I was free of the burden that was high school and all the drama that went with it;
especially during quarantine. Going through what I did id something that I wouldn’t even wish on
my worst enemies.

                    <text>A Voice From 2020
How can I begin to characterize an event in our lives that is so far from being
over? Being in the middle of a pandemic is unlike any experience I have ever had. The
virus has no sympathy. It does not pick and choose who it affects but instead invades
any person that it can reach. This has resulted in numerous months of isolation and
loneliness for a lot of people. Yes, thanks to technology we can still communicate with
friends and family through a screen, but this is no substitute for face-to-face interaction;
something that we previously took for granted. Schools began to close in the middle of
March and since then there have been multiple waves of the virus. Now it is December
and another major wave has hit the country, but despite this, the administration of a
vaccine has started, and the storm cloud that has cast a gloom over the entire world for
the past year seems to slowly be lifting.
Covid-19 has caused so many aspects of my life to be uprooted. The end of my
senior year in high school was basically canceled: no prom, no spring track season, and
a graduation ceremony with only 20 out of the 400 students in my graduating class. I
already felt like I was living in a dystopian society, but little did I know that this was the
tip of the iceberg in terms of normal aspects in my life that would be taken from me.
Every kid dreams of going to college, to finally live on their own with no parental
guidance. All of my ideas of what I imagined my college experience to be like were
immediately thrown out the window. Masks had to be worn everywhere besides my own
dorm room. Walking around campus I could not make out the faces behind the masks.
In my double dorm room, besides me and my roommate, only two others could be in
there at a time. My soccer season was modified to the extent that we played zero

games and practiced only three days a week. School did not feel like school. I rolled out
of bed for my 8 am class at 7:59 am only to go sit at my desk, flip my laptop open, and
click on a link to a Zoom meeting, still in my pajamas and wrapped in a warm blanket.
Even that was more than I had to do. I could have just logged into Zoom from my bed,
but knowing myself I would not have been able to focus on school and might have even
drifted off to sleep during a class if I did that.
Despite all of these changes that no one expects to have to endure when going
to college for the first time, I was still able to make new friends, socialize safely on the
weekends, learn a lot, and play the sport I love. This all ended abruptly though when at
the end of October, all members of Gulick Hall, where I lived, were quarantined and two
days later all classes went remote. Students were given the option to stay on campus or
to go home until the start of the spring semester. Most everyone chose to go home, as
did I. This sudden change caused my final days of living at school for the fall semester
to be filled with stress. On top of the normal anxiousness that I was already feeling, my
roommate found out that she was in close contact with someone that had tested
positive. This made me wonder if I should go home or not. My mind was swirling with
questions. Should I go home and risk bringing the virus to my family? Should I stay and
be quarantined for two weeks in Gulick without my friends as they were moving back
home? My parents made the decision for me: I was coming home. I got a Covid test on
the morning of the day I moved out. I had to move every last thing out of my dorm room
by myself as my parents were not allowed to enter the building. On my ride home I wore
a mask as I had spent the last 48 hours in my ten-foot by ten-foot dorm room with a
potentially infected person.

At home, I immediately quarantined myself in my room, not knowing if my
exposure to the virus had caused me to become infected. I received my test results the
next day and I was negative, but my roommate also found out that she was positive that
same day. The tricky thing about Covid is that even though I tested negative, the health
center told me that a positive test result could still be produced up to fourteen days after
I was last exposed. For the next two weeks, I lived in my bedroom, leaving only to walk
the five steps out my door and into the bathroom, or to go for runs around my
neighborhood. My parents brought food up to me on a tray and I would even eat with
my door open so I would feel like I was at least partly eating with my family. I tried to
keep myself occupied so I would not think about the high possibility that I was infected,
but it was difficult not to let my mind wander. After one week of quarantine, I tested
negative again. I loosened my restrictions a little to allow myself to go into the kitchen to
make my own food but was still wearing a mask in my own home. On the last day of my
two-week quarantine, I went to get tested for the third and final time. This was the
moment of truth. The next morning I woke up to a negative test result. I was lucky. I feel
like I escaped not only Covid but the long-term effects from it that no one knows about
yet.
I feel grateful that I was able to learn about Covid-19 while I was living through it.
This class has taught me so much about infectious diseases. I was able to gain a better
understanding of the microscopic world around me. What I have learned is something
that I will be thinking about years from now, even in the absence of Covid. A major
takeaway from this class for me is how nations across the globe can be better prepared
and equipped to take on a virus, like the coronavirus, before it manifests itself in the

human population. In six years I will be graduated from the physician assistant program
here at Springfield College. Who knows, maybe I will travel to underdeveloped nations
and teach fellow medical professionals how to prepare for pandemics before they
emerge, and it will all be thanks to this class.

                    <text>Awareness and Pandemic Experiences

I am writing this in May, mental health awareness month….and we should be aware. Last
night, I watched an emotional video on Facebook of a father telling the story of how the virus
took his 12-year-old son. His son wasn’t infected with the virus, he had taken his life. At the
beginning of this, mental health wasn’t the discussion regarding social isolation, people were
mainly concerned with their physical health and safety. People who never knew they were
struggling may be affected. We haven’t experienced anything like this before and that can bring
up unseen emotions and thoughts. Humans live by social interaction, we could not survive
without it. I am lucky enough to be under the same roof as my family during the quarantine. I
feel for the people who are all alone right now, do not have a roof over their head or have a
family to be with, and the people who have lost their job.
Today I met a wholesome elderly woman. I started working for a service called Instacart
where I buy groceries for people who cannot get exposed to the virus. When I dropped off the
groceries, she came outside to check everything and say hi. She was excited to see me and
because it was a beautiful day out, so she could work on her garden outside. This virus is mainly
killing the elderly and this interaction reminded me of how special this group of people is to
humanity. They are the wisest people on earth and are typically so grateful for every small thing.
Something I constantly hear is how this virus is “only killing old people, so it’s not as bad”. Yet
some don’t even realize how special and important this group of people is. Almost every day
now, I see a post on Instagram or Facebook about the loss of someone 65 and older. Our
grandparents are dying. We have come too far with modern medicine to just be okay with a
whole population being killed off.
Wherever I go, mask on. Almost everyone around me has one on. If you don’t wear a
mask inside a public area, you run the risk of being harassed or getting into a fight over it. When

Awareness and Pandemic Experiences

I first started working for Instacart, I went to a local Big Y grocery store and ended up spending
hours there because I was not used to the new job and I had picked up a large order. This was my
first experience wearing a mask. I discovered that wearing a mask increases the likelihood of
experiencing anxiety because you cannot take deep breaths in. I wouldn’t call myself someone
with an anxiety disorder, but I tend to freak out a lot under pressure or when things aren’t going
right. I found myself short of breath and frankly almost passed out. An increase in anxiety
ultimately suppresses the immune system too. Are we still unaware?
When I’m walking past someone in a store or see someone I know, I usually smile at
them as a way of greeting them and being friendly. When I am in the grocery store, I find that I
still smile at everyone I pass by because I do it naturally, but I forget that they cannot see beneath
the mask. Certain human connections are unavailable at this time.
We have Zoom. Our classes are conducted on zoom and our social interactions. I am so
grateful that we live in the generation of technology and we were able to finish up our classes,
instead of missing a full semester. I’m grateful that we have FaceTime and texting, so friends
and family can stay connected in some form. We can still check in on each other and get a few
laughs in. Let me tell you, it gets a little old living in the same house as your family for months
with nowhere to go! We are so fortunate to have these resources; however, no matter how much
work professors put into lesson plans, it will still never be the same. When you are in a real class
or having a conversation with someone in person, you cannot see yourself, just the person you
have your attention on. With Zoom, you can see your video, your classmates’ video, and your
professor, so maybe you’re not always focusing on what you normally would if you were just
sitting in a classroom. The interaction aspect of zoom is not the same as well. We do not have a
true face-to-face connection. One thing I have noticed when I do group zoom calls with my

Awareness and Pandemic Experiences

friends or my teammates is there is no such thing as a side conversation. When you’re in a big
group of people, it is typical to see side conversation before an activity has begun and that is how
you build a personal connection with people. We may not find that again for a while.
No matter how much we look into the statistics of this and try to predict what will happen
next, it is impossible to predict the future entirely. Many public health officials knew that we
wouldn’t be prepared for the next pandemic, America didn’t have the support it needed. I
constantly find myself making plans for “whenever this is all over” and looking forward to the
fall semester and my favorite running season, cross country, but I do not know when the end will
be. There may not even be a true “end” because there is no guarantee that we find a safe and
effective vaccine or that the disease will be eradicated. I think it is comforting to hold onto hope
and be excited about the future, but no one truly knows the timeline.
The last “normal” week we had was midterms week. Everyone was looking forward to
spring break and their vacation plans. I remember the flow of that week perfectly. In the
beginning, COVID-19 wasn’t a huge fear. As the days went by, the NCAA started canceling
sports seasons and the emotions heightened. The seniors didn’t get to finish out their athletic
careers; there were many tears. Colleges began to declare going online and having extended
spring breaks. On that Thursday night, friends got together and stayed up late. We had our last
moments together for the semester and didn’t even know it. Everything was very uncertain that
night. We cried, and we laughed. Then, we hugged goodbye. I have truly learned to never take
any moment, any opportunity, or any friendship for granted because I learned the hard way, you
never know when it will be gone.

<text>I am writing this in May, mental health awareness month….and we should be aware. Last night, I watched an emotional video on Facebook of a father telling the story of how the virus took his 12-year-old son. His son wasn’t infected with the virus, he had taken his life. At the beginning of this, mental health wasn’t the discussion regarding social isolation, people were mainly concerned with their physical health and safety. People who never knew they were struggling may be affected. We haven’t experienced anything like this before and that can bring up unseen emotions and thoughts. Humans live by social interaction, we could not survive without it. I am lucky enough to be under the same roof as my family during the quarantine. I feel for the people who are all alone right now, do not have a roof over their head or have a family to be with, and the people who have lost their job.
Today I met a wholesome elderly woman. I started working for a service called Instacart where I buy groceries for people who cannot get exposed to the virus. When I dropped off the groceries, she came outside to check everything and say hi. She was excited to see me and because it was a beautiful day out, so she could work on her garden outside. This virus is mainly killing the elderly and this interaction reminded me of how special this group of people is to humanity. They are the wisest people on earth and are typically so grateful for every small thing. Something I constantly hear is how this virus is “only killing old people, so it’s not as bad”. Yet some don’t even realize how special and important this group of people is. Almost every day now, I see a post on Instagram or Facebook about the loss of someone 65 and older. Our grandparents are dying. We have come too far with modern medicine to just be okay with a whole population being killed off.
Wherever I go, mask on. Almost everyone around me has one on. If you don’t wear a mask inside a public area, you run the risk of being harassed or getting into a fight over it. When I first started working for Instacart, I went to a local Big Y grocery store and ended up spending hours there because I was not used to the new job and I had picked up a large order. This was my first experience wearing a mask. I discovered that wearing a mask increases the likelihood of experiencing anxiety because you cannot take deep breaths in. I wouldn’t call myself someone with an anxiety disorder, but I tend to freak out a lot under pressure or when things aren’t going right. I found myself short of breath and frankly almost passed out. An increase in anxiety ultimately suppresses the immune system too. Are we still unaware?
When I’m walking past someone in a store or see someone I know, I usually smile at them as a way of greeting them and being friendly. When I am in the grocery store, I find that I still smile at everyone I pass by because I do it naturally, but I forget that they cannot see beneath the mask. Hello,
I am reaching out to share the work that some of your students are participating in, through
BroadStreet’s COVID-19 Data Project Internship. BroadStreet provides public good tools that
allow professionals to spend their time and resources on improving community health.
BroadStreet’s COVID-19 Data Project is a collaboration of approximately 200 students,
statisticians, epidemiologists, healthcare experts, data scientists and other passionate
professionals who are committed to having the most accurate, community level data about the
COVID-19 positive tests and fatality rates.
We have been humbled by the outpouring of support, especially from the collegiate community.
We know that right now students have a unique set of challenges trying to navigate these
difficult times, maintaining their studies, most who are away from home and while adapting to
their new normal. Despite this, we wanted to recognize your students who have graciously
donated their time and talent to our project.
You can learn more about BroadStreet here: https://learn.broadstreet.io
You can see the data your students help collect here: http://covid19dataproject.org
Below is a list of the students who have participated by tracking historical data, collecting daily
data, as well participating in special interest team projects that include computer based
automation, data visualization, infectious disease, policy, social media and fundraising.
We know that during this time, good news can be more meaningful than ever, and we welcome
you to share these student’s participation in any department or college-wide publications or
emailing’s. We are glad to be in touch if you have any questions, or want to discuss further
opportunities for your students. Once again, we thank you as well as your students for the
commitment to public health research and a better tomorrow.
Thank you,
BroadStreet’s COVID-19 Data Project

Greetings,
Easter this year is different. Because of expert medical advice, we distance ourselves from each other. Even close
relatives or friends won't join us for Easter Dinner. We will miss them. We won't even go to Church physically. Yet, we do
have some opportunities to worship on-line. (See below.)
We had hopes for Lent. For the Semester. For Spring. Some of us could be anxious about the summer. Perhaps, with
reason. What will happen to our plans? For, we had hoped that...
Even, on the first Easter morning, the disciples are told not to be afraid. They are advised to "back to Galilee" and He will
see them there. Galilee is "code" for where and when they first met Jesus. They head to Galilee. They understand Jesus'
challenge to reflect on what about Jesus catches their imagination. As we also reflect on our "Galilee", what is
about Jesus that first attracted us to Him? For me, I am always moved that He accepts people; He doesn't judge people.
Pope Francis leads us in prayer: "Lord, you don't want us to be afraid. You, Lord will not leave us at the mercy of the
storm. Together, with Peter, we 'cast our anxieties on to you, for you care about us.'" (1 Peter 5:7)
Don't be afraid to tell Jesus our worries. About the pandemic. About everything. We long to meet Him again when and
where he first caught our imagination. Our Galilee. Can you hear Him call your name, again? What does He say to you?
An unknown artist (to me) captures compassionate and competent medical personnel attending to another victim of the
global pandemic, a modern day Jesus.

In this tapestry below, Raphael presents the power of the Risen Jesus conquering evil, death - and giving us hope.

The Risen Jesus, says "Peace. Don't be afraid." And, tell the others we will meet up in Galilee where we first met. Jesus
tells us to hope. Where do you think you would be able to hope again this Easter?

<text>Everyone’s life has drastically changed since the world entered a pandemic from COVID-19. The things every college student took for granted like athletics, graduation, in person classes, and dinner in dining hall was suddenly all taken away from us. This video is a message from college students to college students expressing the importance of practicing social distancing. Practicing social distancing is something that can save a person who is more susceptible to disease than you are. We are staying home to save the lives of our parents and grandparents. This time is something no one has ever experiences before and it is hard for young adults to accept since they feel they are wasting away their college time. I think it is important to preserve this video because it expresses the unity of college students everyone coming together during this pandemic. I would want someone to notice the transition from the beginning of this video of the college boy saying nothing is going to stop him from partying to the rest of the video of college kids expressing the importance of staying home to help flatten the curve of COVID-19 deaths. </text>

COVID Class of 2020
2020 was supposed to be the year where I closed one chapter of my life and moved onto
the next chapter smoothly. Your entire life everybody always hypes up the excitement of senior
year. You hear about all the fun stories from prom and graduation. Everybody tells you to enjoy
it while it lasts because it’ll be over before you know it. I was doing exactly that, the start of the
year was going just how I expected it to be. I was enjoying my senior year, taking super easy
classes, and soaking up every last moment of childhood. Sadly, due to the pandemic and other
reasons, 2020 has been an extremely tough year and has thrown so much at me.
At the end of February my uncle unexpectedly lost his battle with cancer, leaving behind
my aunt and his 11 and 13 year old daughters. He was only 49. My cousins are the sweetest and
most intelligent little girls ever and they did not deserve to lose their father. About a week or so
after he passed away, my family and I flew to Switzerland for the funeral. We wanted to comfort
my cousins so badly and grieve with them, but they hate being the center of attention. With how
overwhelming everything was, all they wanted was some sense of normalcy during this
incredibly sad time. They are so disciplined that they chose to still go to school that week. Seeing
my cousins spread their father's ashes into his grave was easily one of the most heartbreaking
moments of my life. Something they should never have had to do at such a young age. I
remember seeing them grasp onto my aunt as she cried. I was so proud to see how strong and
supportive they were. I check in with my cousins as often as I can, but the time difference makes
it very difficult. As we were at the airport for our flight back home, I remember seeing some
people wearing masks and stubbornly thinking that they were being paranoid for no reason.
Little did I know, one week later the world would shutdown because of the COVID-19
pandemic.

2
Leading up to March I had been working my ass off for so many months in preparation
for my senior volleyball season. My junior year we lost in the regional championship and lost
most of our roster to graduation. I stepped up and was fully prepared to lead my team to another
shot at winning a regional championship—my life revolved around it. March 12th was the first
practice of my senior season. I didn’t know it then, but that day was also the last practice of my
high school volleyball career. Schools all across the country temporarily postponed in-person
classes as a precautionary measure. At first, it was just supposed to be three weeks, then three
weeks turned into just until the end of April and then my high school called the year. No senior
season. No regional championship. No prom. No real graduation. I have trouble putting words
together to describe how devastated I was. I felt like every ounce of effort I put in towards
volleyball went to literally nothing. I’ve never worked so hard for something in my life, not even
remotely close. Missing out on my senior season is something I will never get over. I am lucky
enough to be playing in college but I would trade anything to get that senior season back.
After finding out there was no chance of me having a senior season, I had no motivation
to do anything and I don’t think I smiled for weeks. On May 3rd, my mom came into my room
and woke me up around 7:30am which was way earlier than I intended on waking up. She told
me that one of my best friends' mom unexpectedly died from cardiac arrest. I was completely
blindsided by this news and knew I had to help him. My friend ended up living with me for a
week until his siblings could find somewhere for him to live. He, like many kids from my town,
grew up in single parent homes in extreme poverty and have no one helping them stay on track.
It was really stressful having him live with my family right after his mom passed away, because
we wanted to make sure we were doing everything to help him in that unimaginable situation.
Losing my senior season was still so fresh and painful but during that week my problems became

3
so much less important than what he was going through. Some things are much bigger than
sports, but without sports I would have never met him and would not have been able to help him.
Part of me feels like I still haven’t closed the high school chapter of my life yet. I should
have gotten the opportunity to showcase all of my hard work on the volleyball court for my
senior season. I should have gotten the opportunity to take my girlfriend to prom. I should have
gotten the opportunity to walk across the stage and get my diploma in front of my parents. It
pains me to think about all the other little memories that I missed out on. The craziest part about
how badly this year has gone is that 2020 is not over and it could get even worse. Thinking back
to my early memories of 2020 literally feels like ages ago. I have high hopes that 2020 will get
better and the good will outweigh the bad.

                    <text>Springfield College: COVID-19 FAQs  3/7/20

What do I need to know?
 The novel coronavirus is a newly identified strain of a known virus family
called coronaviruses. The common cold is an example of another strain
of a coronavirus. The novel coronavirus strain in this outbreak causes a
disease called COVID-19.
 As of March 7th 2020, there are NO confirmed cases of COVID-19 in
Western Massachusetts.
 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
your risk of infection is low, unless you have recently traveled to
affected areas or have been in close contact with an individual with
COVID-19.
 If you do experience symptoms, contact Student Health Services at
413-748-3175 BEFORE going to work, attending class, or other group
gatherings.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19, and how can I stay safe?
 Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath and may
appear 2-14 days after exposure.
 There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19.
 The best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure and to follow
everyday preventative actions to reduce the spread of respiratory
diseases, including:
o

Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.

o

Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

o

Frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water for at
least 20 seconds.

o

Regular cleaning and disinfection of household surfaces, including
your cell phone and computer.

 The CDC does not recommend the use of facemasks to protect healthy
individuals.
 You can help protect others by staying home when you are sick, and
coughing or sneezing into a tissue (rather than your hand or elbow) and
throwing the tissue away. If you don’t have a tissue handy, cough or
sneeze into your elbow. Avoid coughing or sneezing near other people.

Springfield College: COVID-19 FAQs  3/7/20

Is it safe to travel?
 The CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to
China, Iran, South Korea, Italy, Japan, and Hong Kong.
 As of March 7th, there are no domestic travel warnings for US residents.


The most up-to-date travel information from the CDC can be found at
CDC Travel - FAQ and Answers and CDC COVID-19 Information for
Travel.

Are study abroad programs and international travel affected?
 Springfield College is carefully monitoring all international locations
where members of the campus community are studying and traveling
this semester.
 As of February 28th, all students studying abroad in Italy have been
withdrawn. Students returning from affected regions should self-monitor
for symptoms and not visit campus for a period of 14 days. No other
students studying abroad have been withdrawn.
 As of March 3rd, all upcoming college sponsored international travel is
suspended.
 As of March 3rd, Springfield College advises all students currently
studying abroad to cancel unnecessary travel outside of their host
community.
How is Springfield College responding and preparing?
 Springfield College is following guidance from the CDC and the World
Health Organization (WHO), and is working closely with state and local
public health authorities to develop protocols and to reduce the
possibility of exposure to COVID-19, including recommending a 14-day
self-quarantine for any person deemed at risk of exposure.
 Springfield College has a plan to care for members of the campus
community who need to observe the 14-day self-quarantine period,
including a care plan for the affected persons, a prepared location
removed from other community members for affected persons who
cannot return home, and a communication plan to get information to
those affected.

Springfield College: COVID-19 FAQs  3/7/20

 The most up-to-date information from Springfield College can be found
at http://springfield.edu/coronavirus.
 Springfield College’s Health Center staff are available to answer
additional questions.
What do quarantine and isolation mean?
 Self-quarantine is voluntary, and means that healthy people who
suspect potential exposure do not go to work, school, or public
areas, and avoid other members of their household, including using a
separate bedroom and bathroom if possible.
 Mandatory quarantine could be enforced and involves the same
instructions to affected persons.
 Isolation occurs when confirmed cases of COVID-19 are separated from
others for the duration of their illness (until they test negative for the
virus twice 24-hours apart).
 The CDC recommends anyone with potential exposure (including
returning home from an affected area) self-quarantine for 14 days.
Where can I learn more about COVID-19?
 The CDC and the WHO are both excellent resources for comprehensive
and up-to-the-minute information.
 If needed, updates specific to Springfield and Massachusetts will be
posted on the following websites:
o Springfield Department of Health and Human Services
o Massachusetts Department of Public Health
 Johns Hopkins University is maintaining a live map of the COVID-19
outbreak, including global distribution of cases and information on the
outcome of confirmed cases.

                    <text>April 22nd, 2020
Dear Whomever this may concern,

Hi, my name is Christian Ormsby, a freshman here at Springfield College, class of 2023. In the
Spring Semester of my current year, 2020, as we were going on spring break, the COVID-19
crisis started to pick up way heavier than it did before. Current President Mary Beth Cooper
announced to all students Wednesday, March 11th that we would be having an extended spring
break due to the circumstances of the pandemic. In the announcement, if there would be further
action taken on this pandemic (like closing), she would send out an email during spring break to
inform students and faculty as so.
On the last day of campus, March 13th, everyone on campus had a feeling that we were
going to shut down for the semester. Packing to go home was a very sad experience, but also
very concerning and confusing one. As students, we were unaware if we were coming back or
not, so there was an underlying question as to how much stuff to bring back to our house and
what we should leave back in the dorm room.
Eventually leaving, we later found out spring break week that we would be moving
virtually/online permanently for the rest of the spring semester. As teachers started to prepare for
online learning, I was preparing to restart a previous job at the Shoprite of Croton, located in
Croton-On-Hudson, New York. Now, this is Westchester county which is a hotbed for COVID19.
The experience of online schooling, work and caring for my family, specifically mom is
definitely a fascinating one. First, seeing how grocery stores have changed during this time is
crazy. There are lines mostly everyday to enter the store that are long, limiting the amount of

people in and out. Workers direct you as to what register to go to in order to check out your
groceries, as well as coupons, customer service and returns being postponed. Direction flow for
the aisles in the store is located on the floor, directing customers the correct way to go (although
no one listens to it). As classes switched online, only one class requires weekly meetings while
the others either don’t meet online, or meeting online is optional. All work is submitted by a
deadline, however in circumstances teachers will give extensions. This was seen first hand by me
as well, as my mother was being tested for the virus for about a week. She had shortness of
breath one day, went to urgent care and they tested her. As she was being what we call during
this time “quarantined”, I was taking care of her, getting the groceries, going to the bank and
much more. Luckily the test results for COVID-19 came out negative, however still to be safe I
remain taking care of her. School, work, and taking care of my mom gives me a great balance
during this time. Honestly, without work, school and taking care of family, I would be sitting
around doing nothing all day, which pains me to say. This experience is very benefical and has
opened my eyes to alot more of the world around me. Your average workers, such as grocery
store workers or retail workers are now way more appreciated than they have been before.

                    <text>Alana Gartenberg
As we approach 10 months of living in a pandemic, some part of me still can’t
comprehend that all of this is real. I remember starting my first spring semester at Springfield
College in January 2020, and people began to discuss the virus. However, at this point, everyone
more or less believed it would stay in China, and no one really took it seriously or thought much
of it. We all just went about our daily lives. When living on a college campus, it’s difficult to
keep up with the news unless you make an active effort to. Almost all of my news about the
virus was coming from Instagram, and most of the posts were memes. The majority of us didn’t
take this seriously until March approached. There were cases in the United States, and rumors of
a lockdown. With campuses shutting down across the country, it seemed that Springfield
College was next. That became official during a large meeting in the Dodge Room on the
second floor of the Union. It felt like the entire student body attended this meeting, with all of us
anxious to find out the fate of our semester. It was ironic to hear President Cooper talk about
how the virus spreads easily when we were all cramped in this room. Students were sharing
seats and many were in the back of the room standing. I was ignorantly happy when I found out
that we would be getting an extra week of spring break. I thought I’d get an extra week at home
with my family, and then I would be able to come back to finish my semester. No one could
have predicted what was to come.
Explaining this pandemic is challenging. I believe it means something different for
everyone. For some, it meant finally having some extra time to workout, spend time with their
family, start a new hobby such as baking, watch Tiger King, or practice self-care. However, for
others, it meant loneliness and sadness being isolated from loved ones. Many lost members of
their families, some not even having the opportunity to say goodbye. People lost their jobs and

businesses. For me, the pandemic meant many things. I was lucky enough to be one of the
people who started working out and took up baking. Although my sadness wasn’t as severe as
those who had monumental losses, there were still challenging times. It was hard not seeing my
friends and my boyfriend. Long distance relationships are hard enough without a global
pandemic going on.
For everyone, the pandemic meant adjusting and adapting to a new normal. Students all across
the country had to start using Zoom and other similar platforms to get their education. Everyone
had to get used to seeing loved ones living outside of their household on a phone or computer
screen. While the pandemic may not have tragically affected everyone, I guarantee that
everyone was affected in some way and had to adapt to a new lifestyle. There is so much gravity
to this pandemic: no matter how much you try to ignore it, as many do, it’s real, and it takes a
toll on everyone sometimes.
When I signed up for a Human Disease colloquium in spring 2020, I had no idea how
relevant it would be to today’s world. The first book we read for this class was COVID-19: The
Pandemic that Never Should Have Happened, and How to Stop the Next One. There were times
when living on campus was stressful and confusing, so it was nice to come to class every week
and not only discuss the book, but also what was happening on campus and around the country.
One of the most valuable things I learned is the importance of listening to scientists and
epidemiologists. The world was extremely underprepared for a coronavirus pandemic despite
epidemiologists saying since the SARS outbreak of 2002 that evidence pointed to a coronavirus
surfacing. Scientists have been warning for decades that this was going to happen, and if
government officials around the world would have listened, COVID-19 likely would have been
much less severe. Reading this book helped me realize that more needs to be done in terms of

preparing for all different kinds of viruses. Experts warned about lack of preparation, and the
few countries that did have pandemic plans focused solely on the flu when there are so many
other viruses, such as coronaviruses, that can and will emerge and put individuals in danger.
Even with these plans in place, many countries failed to stockpile or acquire even the most basic
essentials required to make the plans work. If a worldwide pandemic does not inspire future
preparedness, I don’t know what will. Something needs to be done because the effects could be
catastrophic if we do exactly what has been done in the past. I gained so much knowledge taking
this class, and all I can do is take what I have learned and try to educate those around me and
hope that countries will start taking pandemic precautions sooner rather than later.

Next, Kolady goes on to speak of the sick time put in place. For the first time, part-time employees are now being offered 24 hours of paid leave. If a colleague has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher at the onset of their shift, they are allotted 72 hours of leave. Lastly, CVS began offering financial support to colleagues who need extended measures. However, working at an "essential business" during the pandemic allowed me to experience the many new regulations that continue to change the norms of every day life. On top of the changes addressed in this voicemail my city of employment, Chicopee, continued to implement more regulations to prevent the spread of the virus such as limits on purchases, regulation of what was being sold, reduced capacities of store, and reduced store hours. This calm, reassuring message displays a much different tone than what was experienced in the moment at these essential businesses. The urgency for personal protection led to expedited packages being shipped in multiple times a week in mass quantities rather than once a week yet there still remained a shortage all over the nation. Remaining open caused colleagues to adapt to new policy changes taking place almost each shift. It is questionable if some of the regulations such a plexiglass dividers will ever be lifted. The changes made during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to change the every day regularities we all once experienced and that is emphasized in this file. </text>

May 15, 2020
During This Time

It’s now May. The month I was looking forward to this year. It’s when classes ended,
spring began, and my birthday came. But I guess all my plans went down the drain. This isn’t
your typical “what happened to you during the coronavirus pandemic” paper; I guess I am
different. Unlike most of the students here, I am a commuter and a local. I couldn’t get away
from what was happening around Springfield, instead, I was submerged deep into it.
I am currently a junior in the Health Science major, so for me, this pandemic is a
wonderful, yet terrible learning experience. My professors all took this opportunity to implement
what we were learning in the current situation. As neighboring colleges decided to go online, I
dreaded Springfield College doing so as well. I couldn’t get away from home, at the end of the
day, I went home to my bed and slept, so school was the only other place I’d be. You’d find me
in the learning commons or the Union the most. For me, it was my haven away from home, a
place I could be alone and not controlled. But that too was taken away from me by the
coronavirus.
Having to stay home and remained home is hard for me. I share a room with my younger
sister and for both of us to try to school and share a room was simply impossible. It appears I
might just fail this semester. I felt all my efforts disappear and my determination with it. Going
online felt impossible with my course load. All my labs online, and language class online, how
was I going to do this? On top of this, my parents didn’t understand that I was supposed to be in
“school-mode” not “home-mode”. There was no clean line that separated the two mindsets. For
them, I was just home 24/7 and was able to answer all their calls. It was a hard switch online, to

have to keep motivated and determined to complete the semester. On top of this, most of my
teachers were new to our Brightspace system, thus going online was new to both of us. Towards
our finals, my brother was the one who gave me my determination once again.
My brother is currently a patient care technician at Baystate Medical Center here in
Springfield and a part-time student at Springfield Technical Community College. When the
pandemic started to get worse, my brother was pushed deeper into the hospital and had to treat
COVID-19 positive and negative patients. On top of this, he was keeping up with his course
work online and keeping safe from the virus. His constant push in the hospital and at school
inspired me to push through school and finish on a big note.
Being home was different now. My parents always tried to teach me something I had
already known and understood. They would tell me something different about the pandemic and
when I try to tell them otherwise, they tell me no and that I’m wrong. Last time I checked; I am
the one getting a degree in this. With this constant attitude for the last couple of months, I grew
an extra skin and pride in my major. Therefore, I wanted to go into health sciences, because of
no matter if the world was ending, public health and health care are always there.
The world did an amazing job responding, especially Vietnam. And yes, I am
Vietnamese-American, so I am extremely proud. However less proud of how the U.S. handled
itself in this situation. I felt more anger run through my body as I watched the news and
protesters go on and on. How could you fail humankind in such a time of need, where selfishness
is out in the open? I hope this pandemic can teach our government officials a lesson and the
citizens as well. There is no one way of doing things and everyone is missing information or are
too ignorant to except anything other than what they think is right.

This pandemic gave people a reason to point fingers and blame others. It gave people a
reason to be ignorant and selfish. It revealed the problems the United States had with their
response to this virus or the lack of response. It also revealed to me who I was as a person, where
my haven was, and just how much I missed being able to have books surrounding me while I do
my homework. I know that I have taken school for granted. The coronavirus pandemic became
our new normality for the time being, and that changed is needed to be done before we can go
back to the old days.

<text>1/29/20: Message From Patrick Love, VP of Student Affairs
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I’m sharing the following information to help inform the Springfield College campus community about
the global health concern, the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCOv) first identified in December in
China. The College is actively monitoring the situation.
It is important to note that Massachusetts continues to be considered low risk and there are currently
no identified cases of this coronavirus in New England. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has
confirmed five cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. – one in Arizona, two in California, one in
Washington state, and one in Illinois.
We know that a student at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT was monitored over the weekend for
the virus and tested negative. The student had recently traveled through an airport that had a confirmed
case of the virus and complained of a fever and cough.
The CDC continues to monitor and provide recommendations regarding the virus, a respiratory infection
spread through cough and sneeze droplets. It is not airborne.
Symptoms include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and shortness of breath. If you are showing signs of
any of these symptoms and have recently traveled to Wuhan City, China (within last 14 days) or have
come in contact with an individual who had confirmed 2019-nCOv, you should seek immediate medical
attention. Additional information about 2019-nCOv can be found at the CDC.
Among the recommendations of our Health Center for preventing transmission of this virus or any other
virus including the common cold and influenza (which have similar symptoms to the coronavirus) are:
· Regularly wash hands with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer
· Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue into the trash
· Avoid close contact with people who are sick
· Stay home when you are sick
· Do not share drinks or utensils
· Avoid intimate contact, including kissing and hugging
· Call the Health Center for an appointment to be evaluated if sick (413-748-3175)
· Obtain a flu shot if you have not already done so (available at the Health Center)
The Health Center can assist with any additional questions or concerns. The Center is open Monday
through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. It is recommended to call for an appointment at
413-748-3175. For after-hour emergencies, contact Public Safety: 413-748-5555.
Sincerely,
Dr. Patrick Love
Vice President for Student Affairs
3/3/20: Message from Mary-Beth Cooper, President of Springfield College

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
The health and safety of our students is the College's highest priority. In response to news of a number of
Novel Coronavirus (now called CoVid19) cases in Italy, Springfield College, in conjunction with our
partners, has suspended study abroad programs in that country and withdrew all of our 15 students from
Italy.
All students have made plans to return home over the next few days where they will reunite with their
families and finish out the semester. Our Italian academic partners have made arrangements for students
to continue their courses remotely. Springfield College will work with students to minimize the academic
impact of this transition. Any questions or concerns about academic progress should be directed to Mary
Ann Coughlin, Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Even though our students in Italy were not located in areas highly impacted by the virus, we recognize
that this is a rapidly evolving situation. The decision was made in line with safety protocol established by
our administration and best practices in international education. The health, safety and well-being of our
students is our utmost priority. In line with the recommendations of health authorities, students are being
instructed to self-monitor for possible flu-like symptoms and not visit campus for a period of 14 days.
This afternoon, the Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health advised all colleges and universities in
the state to suspend college-sponsored international travel. Therefore, we are abiding and are suspending
our college-sponsored international travel at this time.
The College continues to closely monitor the spread of the virus and its potential impact on the campus as
well as on countries where Springfield College students, staff, and faculty are visiting or are planning to
visit.
As this is an evolving situation, the College will continue to provide updates if there are any additional
significant changes that may impact the Springfield College community. In the meantime, stay informed
through the CDC’s website and await further guidance on prevention from our Health Center.
Sincerely,

Mary-Beth A. Cooper

3/9/20: Message from Mary-Beth Cooper, President of Springfield College

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:
The College’s administrative leadership team has been monitoring the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak.
The health, safety, and well-being of our community remains our top priority. We have two groups of
staff and faculty working together to address this unique situation. We are in contact with the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and are following guidelines issued by the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC), as well as the World Health Organization (WHO).
I want to assure you that contingency planning is well underway. Based on developments across the

country and internationally, we are implementing new policies regarding travel and campus events, all
designed to protect our community as a whole. All decisions are subject to change as the situation
develops, so we will update the community regularly to keep you informed.
All communications and resources related to the coronavirus are available on our website at
http://springfield.edu/coronavirus. This remains the best place to locate Springfield College-related
information and resources regarding the coronavirus. Additionally, for the latest general updates on the
coronavirus, please visit the Centers for Disease Control website.
Travel Information
Faculty and staff are asked to suspend the booking of any domestic or international travel utilizing public
transportation (e.g., airlines, buses, trains) until further notice, except for essential College-related travel
as determined by the President. If you are unsure whether your travel falls into the essential category,
please email your question to studentaffairs@springfield.edu.
Further, all faculty and staff must register any authorized college-related travel occurring now through
commencement (domestic and international). Please note that faculty and staff are restricted from
college-related travel to Level III countries. Please monitor the CDC travel website (www.cdc.gov/travel)
for up-to-date information on the status of countries.
We are requesting that faculty, staff, and students register spring break and other personal travel planned
for the rest of the semester. Such a registration process allows us to create a record of where people have
been and will help inform public health outbreak tracking efforts should an infection occur on our
campus. Please register your travel here: https://forms.gle/NT7r9MQitVdfaMWo7. We strongly

encourage campus community members to cancel personal trips to Level II or Level III countries.
Events and visitors

We are asking that College sponsors check in with all invited and scheduled visitors and guests to confirm
they have not been to a Level III country or been in contact with infected persons within 14 days of
visiting our campus.
Physical space
We are in the process of providing enhanced hygiene and cleaning supplies in each classroom and
common areas so that students, staff, and faculty can effectively cover coughs and sneezes and wipe down
surfaces before each use. When possible, disinfecting wipes will also be available for wiping down
technology that cannot be sprayed.
Students who are confirmed cases, where possible, will be sent home to observe a 14-day isolation period.
We will provide single rooms for students who may have been exposed to the virus and must
self-quarantine on campus (if travel to home is prohibited).
Class absences and sick leave
All Springfield College community members should practice CDC recommended hygiene and self-care
practices. Students, faculty, and staff should not come to campus or attend class when they are sick
(especially if they are coughing, sneezing, or have a fever), or if they are caring for someone who is sick.
Faculty should not penalize students for missing class due to illness. Students will coordinate with their
instructors to keep current with coursework and assignments, and instructors should extend due dates as
necessary for students who are ill.
Students who are not attending class due to illness will inform the Student Affairs Office
(studentaffairs@springfield.edu) of their symptoms and will be encouraged to self-quarantine at home, or
may request a reassigned room if they are unable to return home for the duration of their illness. Students,
staff, and faculty who are present in class or at work will be presumed healthy.
Academics
The Provost’s Office will communicate with faculty about the Academic Affairs Emergency Preparedness
and Recovery Plan. This plan primarily addresses contingencies for the suspension of on campus
operations for periods of up to two weeks, with some strategies for addressing longer evacuation periods.
If needed, faculty will be provided with additional information and technical support.
I appreciate the work of the faculty and staff who have assisted with our on-going response to the many
issues which are associated with this complex and evolving situation. Please continue to monitor the
website at www.springfield.edu/coronavirus for updates as they occur.

Additionally, I will be holding a forum on Wednesday night, March 11, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. in Dodge A-F
for those community members who would like to attend.
Best,
Mary-Beth Cooper

3/17/20: Message from Mary-Beth Cooper, President of Springfield College
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
Today, I have made the difficult decision that Springfield College is moving classes online for the
remainder of the semester amid the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. This decision was made
thoughtfully and with an abundance of caution and concern for the health and safety of our Community.
I understand that this is disappointing for all of us, but our highest priority is charting a response to the
rapidly evolving COVID-19 threat, while maintaining academic continuity and integrity and safeguarding
our students’ ability to finish the semester in accordance with all required standards related to federal
financial assistance.
We will continue to implement our on-going comprehensive transition to distance education. After the
two-week extended Spring Break, spring semester classes will resume on Monday, March 30, conducted
fully online, and will continue through the final exams period, which ends on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.
While no decision has been made as of today regarding Commencement activities, we are exploring
options. A decision will be announced as the situation develops.
Students
We understand students will still have many questions about how they will be supported in a fully online
learning environment. Please know we are working to tailor our instruction and services to ensure that all
students will be able to be successful.
Resident Students
Students will be able to collect the remainder of their belongings and clean out their campus residences.
The move-out for residents will be conducted through a staggered schedule. Further information will be
available later today.
Please note: The moving out of belongings is NOT mandatory at this time. An additional time period for
those who do not wish to come to campus during this scheduled move-out period will be established later.
Faculty
Faculty will continue to receive support for transitioning their teaching to online. Those who need support
should reach out to the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship. The office of

Academic Affairs, Deans and Department chairs, along with Faculty Senate are working together on other
key transition issues and new information for faculty will continue to be provided and posted on the
Academic Affairs website.
Employees
All staff and faculty have received comprehensive communications from their supervisors and human
resources regarding telecommuting, recording time, and opportunities for professional development.
Employees with questions about work assignments or expectations should check with their supervisors
who are developing work plans in coordination with their division heads. All employees are encouraged
to continue social distancing to the extent possible.
We know this brings great disappointment to many of us, especially our seniors, who were holding on to
hope that we could all come back to campus to finish up the year. However, we believe it is the right
decision at this time.
Best,
Mary-Beth A. Cooper

3/23/20: Message from Mary-Beth Cooper, President of Springfield College
Dear Members of the Springfield College Community,
I am so proud of how we have come together as a community by demonstrating our continued
commitment to our Humanics philosophy in everything we do. I am grateful for the extra effort to ensure
that our students have the best possible experience in these unprecedented times.
The move out of our resident students continued according to plan over the weekend. Our thanks again to
our Department of Public Safety staff, Office of Facilities Management staff, and Office of Housing and
Residence Life staff for their efforts as well as to our students and families for their understanding of this
necessary process that none of us anticipated.
Our faculty continue this week to prepare for online instruction and virtual learning that will begin March
30 and continue for the remainder of the spring semester.
Over the weekend, our Physician Assistant program staff delivered supplies on behalf of the College to
several local hospitals who had reached out to us for help, including the board chair of one local hospital
who contacted me directly, finding themselves in critical short supply of gloves, masks, and sanitizers.
After first assuring our own health center has the supplies it currently needs, our staff members quickly
responded to a need in our community in true Humanics form.
Today, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker issued an executive order closing all non-essential
businesses and advising residents to telecommute as they are able, as well as limiting access to public
venues for essential activities only. In compliance with the Governor’s order, our staff will continue to
work at home with the exception of those designated by the order for the essential functions of the
College.
I hope this message finds you well. For more information on the College’s response and Q&As, please
regularly visit springfield.edu/coronavirus.
Best,
Mary-Beth A. Cooper
Springfield College President

<text>These were four emails that I received that accurately convey the tone by which Springfield College approached the Coronavirus pandemic during its early stages. It started off with a general warning, perhaps not even a warning, but an informative email about a situation unfolding in the world. Fast forward a little over a month later, and the college starts having to make some big decisions that directly impact its students. A month later, education is fully online. These emails, and the time frame they convey, indicate the rapid nature by which the college was forced to react to the COVID-19 pandemic. I would hope that people looking at this document in the future would recognize the tone of the emails, and the way that our President handled the situation. She has been absolutely great throughout this whole crisis, and though she is having to deal with the weight of some unbelievably heavy decisions for the greater good of the community, she has done it with grace and with comforting words for the students that are being impacted the most. President Cooper's heart aches for the students, and that shows not only through her words, but her actions as well. </text>
