My Experience of the COVID-19 Pandemic
I remember some time in early march of 2020 I was in my highschool library i was
scrolling through instagram, I came across a random post that read “BREAKING: A breakout of
a virus by the name of COVID-19 or “corona” virus is rapidly spreading through wu-han china”.
When I read this i thought nothing of it, I thought so what? It's a small virus across the world. A
few weeks later I was sitting in my house completely separated from the life I was living just a
month ago. When the lock down first started I was ecstatic, my last year of highschool and i
didnt even have to do school work to finish it out. I already wanted to be home all day anyway
so how hard would it be to stay home for a month or two? It was over this time I fully realized the
scope of the situation I had entered. My experience with the COVID-19 pandemic has been an
ever evolving puzzle of new challenges that I along with everyone around me has had to figure
out to navigate.
The moment my mom told me that school had been canceled for the foreseeable future i
could not have been happier. I didn't necessarily hate school, but it being the back half of my
senior year I really felt like I was waiting out the last few months anyways. After the first couple
of days of the lock down I was slowly learning the scope of this virus. I was seeing news reports
of increased cases by thousands everyday. I started to realize the things I had given up to keep
ma and my family members safe. Things like hanging out with friends, all the senior year
activities like the class trip and graduation were the last thought in anyone's mind. The first few
weeks of lockdown are really hard to remember because everyday was exactly the same as the
day before. I would wake up mid-day and try to find anything to do around the house that
usually consisted of finding something to eat, playing video games with my friends and sleeping.

2
This lifestyle quickly became extremely tedious and extremely boring and i was extremely lucky
that I was one of the few people nationwide that was still working a job. There is not much more
I can really say about the first few months of the lock down, it was just a repetitive process of
waking up and waiting inside my house for any information about what we were to do next.
The unique part of my experience with lockdown is that I worked in a grocery store
through the lock down. For the first month or two while I stuck at home while everything was
closed and still trying to figure out the only business open were the essential business and this
included the local grocery store i worked at. Before the pandemic I absolutely hated the tedious
nature of my cashiers job but it was good highschool money and something to put on my
resume so I reluctantly stuck with it through my senior year of highschool. I quickly learned that I
was extremely lucky to have this job. Firstly I was one of the few people still actively working a
job and making an income, I felt bad because I didn't necessarily need this job, I didn't have
anyone relying on me or a family to provide for but since the store couldn't train any new
employees during the pandemic I stayed because it was good money and the store needed all
the help it could get. The store offered increased hourly wages for working during the pandemic
as an incentive for employees to keep working, but after those first few weeks of lockdown I
didn't need the extra pay, I was just happy to have a reason to leave my house. I believe that
working this job helped me deal with the stress of the lockdown because it helped me take my
mind off the current world epidemic. Some immediate changes I noticed in the store were that
everyone had to wear masks and gloves at all times, our shifts increased to six hours and we
had to count the number of people that entered the store because we had a maximum capacity.
I was never nervous about contracting COVID, i lived in an area with very low case numbers
and my brother was and still is an EMT so he was also working through the lockdown so I
figured if i get it, I get it. The virus generally didn't seem to do too much to people of my age.
The most recent part of my COVID experience has been trying to attend my first year of
college both in person and online. I am at this moment a student at Springfield College and

3
while I commend the effort by the school to give the most normal version of a freshman year
possible it's definitely been a unique experience. Move in day was spaced out into three days
and the tricky part of this part of move in day was that you had to pack for college like you could
be sent home by next week. The threat of an outbreak always looms around campus, meaning
that we would all be sent home immediately to finish the semester virtually. Exactly half of my
classes are in person and online. Personally I find that online classes suck, it's hard to stare at a
computer screen in a zoom meeting for an hour but like all other situations in this pandemic we
have no choice but to continue to wait to get back to the new normal. The in person classes also
suffer, teachers are forced to use online content to teach their classes. They no longer have
access to field trips, outside the classroom examples, and even in some classes paper handout
to rely on. For example, I'm taking an Event Management class currently and one of the
assignments is to put on and host an event. My group has had to postpone and cancel our
event because of virus concerts. This makes it harder to really get that critical hands on
experience that this usually has to offer. My overall college experiences with the social
distancing rules and regulations hasn't been necessarily bad, just another new situation that
staff and students have to figure out to the best of their ability.
The puzzle of the ever evolving “new normal’ is and will continue to be challenging to
navigate and work through. Even though I think the worst of it is behind us, that being the
complete lockdown of the country, I believe that it will be years before what we consider normal
will come back. This had definitely been a experience that few generations ever ever have to go
through and i can say while it hasn't been pleasurable it is interesting to think about my place in
the history of the worldwide epidemic.

A School Year of Disappointments

Senior year. The last stretch before really being considered an adult. I was beyond
excited. We were finally allowed to eat outside during lunch, come in late if we had a study, got
the good parking spots up front, we could even have coffee which was very important on the
days that dragged on. I was most excited for friday night football games under the lights,
standing on the sidelines with the rest of my team and winning the homecoming game. But that
didn’t exactly happen. EEE took away the lights from us and almost took the whole season with
it. Luckily we played through. We didn’t know it yet but those days were the very start of the
curse of 2020.
In December, word of the so-called “Coronavirus” started spreading through the media. I
can remember seeing a bunch of different memes about it but not thinking anything of it
because it was so far away from us all the way in China. Then by the end of January things
started getting serious. January 20th, ten days before my 18th birthday, the first Covid case in
the U.S. was reported. I was terrified. All the jokes we made about how it could never get here
came back to haunt us. This was really happening. We managed to survive February in my
town. All was going well up until the middle of March when a guy from the high school a town
over was confirmed of having it. It was the week before March Madness Spirit Week which was
HUGE at my high school. It was also the week of my final football banquet and the beginning of
practices for the lacrosse team. On March 13th my world stopped dead in its tracks. At the end
of that day there was an announcement and I remember it clear as day, “The high school will be

closing down for two weeks for safety reasons. All students should bring home books and
supplies necessary to complete homework for said time.” We were so excited because we got
an extra two weeks off from school and when we came back, there’d be one week of class and
then April Vacation. However that turned out not to be the case. Two weeks turned into three,
then four, and then the whole rest of the year.
That announcement was just one of things that caused my world to crumble. Right after
school ended, I was in the band room for the weekly Tri-M Music Honors Society meeting and I
got a text from my dad; “Call me - we need to talk.” I don’t know about anyone else’s dad but
when I get texts like those it's never a good thing, especially when it's two o’clock in the
afternoon and I know he’s still at work. I left my meeting early because I knew this had to be
important. For a little background, my parents are divorced and have been since the beginning
of my freshman year of high school so I’d only get to see him once every other weekend. I,
having always been my dad’s little girl, took it really hard at first and still struggle with it to this
day because we’ve always been so close. At the time he asked me to call him, he was living in
my grandmother’s house and was taking care of her because she got knee surgery and couldn’t
walk around the house yet and had just beaten cancer a few years prior. When he answered the
phone, I could tell he was already choked up. He tells me that because of the Coronavirus
shutting down schools and because Mimi’s immune system was still very weak, I couldn’t come
over to see her which also meant I couldn’t see him either for at least a month. The news hit me
like a bus. I started tearing up immediately because that day I was supposed to see the both of
them. It was hard having the one thing you were looking forward to all day be the thing that got
ripped away from you in an instant. I got off of the phone and it took everything in me not to cry.
I felt like the world stopped and everyone was looking at me. There was so much that happened
within an hour and I couldn’t control it and it was killing me. I just needed a hug.
Then quarantine happened and my mental health took the biggest hit. I became
extremely unmotivated and didn’t want to do anything. I holed myself up in my room and didn't

do anything except my online classes/homework, sleeping, eating, and watching Netflix. My
body started to feel so weak because I would barely move from my bed. I went from dancing at
least two hours everyday of the week and weekend in the studio to only an hour every other day
of the week. Dancing became my outlet for my emotions. On Wednesdays we’d have a
combination class where my teacher would teach 2 8-counts of a combo and let us improvise
for the rest of the song. The songs would always be in the contemporary style so every week it
was like I got to write down my feelings on a page except it was my body writing words on the
walls of my bedroom. Dancing was one of the things I missed the most. The girls on my team
are some of the closest friends I’ve had and it took a huge toll on all of us when we found out we
weren’t going to have a final competition season. I didn’t hang out with my friends, although I
really wanted to, because I wanted to see my dad and grandmother. It was one of the only two
things keeping me somewhat focussed on school. The other was I knew if I failed any of my
classes I wouldn’t get to graduate.
Fast forward a few months through quarantine, online schooling, and LOTS of Netflix, it
was almost June which meant I finally got to graduate. I had been waiting for this day for four
years. Our school was very hesitant about letting us have a ceremony because there were 169
kids in my class. The administration settled on a drive-by graduation where we’d drive up to the
front of the school, take our diploma, walk to the center of the small stage, switch our tassel,
take a picture, and leave. I was somewhat thankful that we didn’t have to sit in the sun for hours
like we would have if it was completely normal but it wasn’t great either. I was just happy it was
over and I was free of the burden that was high school and all the drama that went with it;
especially during quarantine. Going through what I did id something that I wouldn’t even wish on
my worst enemies.

                    <text>The Impact of Isolation
During the height of quarantine I was left alone, anxious, and unproductive. My parents being
separated, I rarely spent time with them because my father lived in the city and my mom was
then working at the hospital everyday. It was a time when there was no way we could see our
friends and elders, the people with whom I’d spend a majority of my days with. I had never
experienced such a state of loneliness and boredom. It was a very hard time for me in terms of
adjustment

but once regulations started to lift, I had one of the best summers of my entire life.

My mother being a nurse during the pandemic, she was exposed daily to the virus and the
harsh reality of how dangerous it was. When she came home after long hours, not once did she
complain about being tired but instead greeted me with love and hopeful words. I was more
impacted by the fact that she wasn’t home often over the fear of her and I getting sick because
at the time I still couldn’t understand how deadly covid was. Before quarantine, I would go from
school to practice so we always seemed to come home at the same time everyday but because
we were no longer allowed to do those things, I was home alone for most of the days.

Luckily quarantine came after the end of my senior year volleyball season and I was able to
have the last high school season of my favorite sport. My club season was unfortunately
cancelled before we could go to nationals and I had to lose some recruitment opportunities.
Going from doing what I loved daily to it being ripped away so unexpectedly, I was impacted in
a way that left me unable to find a positive in this situation. I remember being so regretful that I
didn’t do more or thank my coaches in person as much as they deserved.

Unable to see all my friends for months, I was consumed with thoughts of how routinely I
treated seeing the people I loved everyday. I seemed to dwell on every encounter I had with my
friends the last time I was around them and was unsatisfied with almost every one after

thinking of what exactly we said to each other. Of course we all stayed in contact through
technology but that could never match hearing and being so closely around them.

Communicating with my friends and teachers through a computer screen for my last year of
high school was something I could’ve never expected. Having ADHD, this negatively affected my
grades and made it very hard to retain and understand the information we were being taught
because of all the distractions at home. I thought of all the absences I had that September
through February and couldn’t believe how much I took school for granted.

On a positive note, by the summer my town had many of the regulations lifted and my friends
and I could do some of the things we missed dearly. We had all our prom, senior plans,
graduation, etc. taken away only for them to be given back to us over the summer by our
amazing school system. We had a masked graduation that allowed us to walk out in front of our
families, the ability to have graduation parties with under 50 people, and a socially distanced
senior picnic that allowed us to see our teachers one last time before going off to school.
Quarantine taught me the difficulties that came with isolation but the happiness that came with
finally feeling free. I learned and will remember forever that better days always follow the bad
ones.

My Life With Covid
On March 11th of 2020, my high school announced that there was going to be one week
off of school due to the hype surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. On that day, I recorded a
video of myself explaining my feelings about the situation. I explained that I was not concerned
and that I thought it would all blow over within the week and everything would go back to
normal. As days went by, I continued to discredit the severity of the situation. Eventually my
hopes of a quick turn diminished and the reality of the situation set in. The next few months of
my life were going to be like no other I had ever experienced.
It was officially my last day of highschool. I didn’t want to be in that place ever, but that
day I just couldn’t believe that I didn’t have the decision to come back on Monday. I had to start
an online class which for me, wasn’t all that bad. The final project every senior has to do, I
didn't. Every assignment that they said was going to be graded, I didn’t do. My highschool only
took the grades of my first three quarters of the year so I was very nonchalant towards school
when we started remote learning. In my highschool career it wasnt that I liked school, however I
liked being there. Seeing my friends and messing around all day was something that I loved and
when I left school it was the start of me missing out on things because of this absurd pandemic. I
realized that the kids who I saw in school but didn’t usually hangout with, I would probably
never see again.Thoughts like these plagued my brain over the coming months and this was the
first of many I would have to overcome. No more school also meant no prom, no graduation and

Joyce 2
most importantly for me no senior season of high school baseball. Instead, I would be sitting in
my mom’s basement eating Cool Ranch Doritos and binge watching the Netflix Original show,
Outer Banks.
Quarantine. The act of isolating yourself from society in order to prevent the spread of a
disease. Something that became a regular thing for the inhabitants of planet Earth in the year
2020. Everybody and their mother was hunkered down in their house, leaving only for essential
activities such as grocery shopping for months on end. Non-essential activities were monitored
and shut down. One thing I will never forget was when me and a few of my friends began to start
playing pickup basketball at a local outdoor court. Eventually we were reported to the police and
kicked off the court as well as being threatened with fines and detainment if we did not comply
with the officers. We were stuck. Even something as seemingly harmless as playing 3v3
basketball was almost considered criminal. All there was left to do was go back to our houses
and drown ourselves in our Xbox’s and Iphones. This kind of containment also caused lots of
stress on my family. Four college aged men, along with 2 parents in the process of a divorce and
a preadolescent, annoying 12 year old, all trapped under one roof. 2020 was also the first year in
my entire life that we did not travel to my Grandparents house or go to church for Easter
festivities. It was chaos and everyone drove everyone insane.
To make every and all matters worse, face masks became a requirement any time one was
to leave their house. Not only are the masks uncomfortable but there is extreme question on how
worth it, it even is to wear them. Sometimes, you would forget to grab a mask before leaving the
house and not realize until you arrive at your destination. Next thing you know, you are walking

Joyce 3
around the local walmart with a dirty pair of sweatpants that you found in the trunk of your car
tied around your head. When establishments and activities finally did start to open back up to the
public, the requirement of masks made it difficult to breathe. My biggest struggle with the masks
was during my high level soccer practices. As a college level athlete, I participated in high
intensity and cardiovascularly strenuous activities. My abilities were limited considerably due to
the masks despite my relatively strong conditioning.
When I departed for college at the end of the summer, I was expecting for things to get
better but I was met with a rude awakening. It may even be worse. I am now required to wear a
mask on my way to the bathroom, while doing my laundry, while attending classes and just
about any time that I am not in my 10x15 foot dorm room. I have also racked up 150$ worth of
Covid-19 related fines and multiple reflection and apology papers since my arrival to the
Campus of Springfield College. I also find myself doing some sort of assignment related to
Covid-19 at a rate of what seems like every day. This document is proof of that. As mentioned
earlier, I am an athlete at college but you might not even be able to tell due to the fact that
practice gets cancelled every other week due to the most recent outbreak of active cases on
campus. The college experience has been completely altered due to the Covid-19 Virus.
It is now October and my original hopes of the virus scare blowing over quickly have
completely and utterly diminished. I have no idea what the future holds in terms of the virus and
at this current point in time but I am very unhopeful. I am yet to contract the virus but it has still
affected almost every aspect of my life including my mental, social, and physical health as well
as my family life, my religion, my personal life, my comfort and much more.

COVID Class of 2020
2020 was supposed to be the year where I closed one chapter of my life and moved onto
the next chapter smoothly. Your entire life everybody always hypes up the excitement of senior
year. You hear about all the fun stories from prom and graduation. Everybody tells you to enjoy
it while it lasts because it’ll be over before you know it. I was doing exactly that, the start of the
year was going just how I expected it to be. I was enjoying my senior year, taking super easy
classes, and soaking up every last moment of childhood. Sadly, due to the pandemic and other
reasons, 2020 has been an extremely tough year and has thrown so much at me.
At the end of February my uncle unexpectedly lost his battle with cancer, leaving behind
my aunt and his 11 and 13 year old daughters. He was only 49. My cousins are the sweetest and
most intelligent little girls ever and they did not deserve to lose their father. About a week or so
after he passed away, my family and I flew to Switzerland for the funeral. We wanted to comfort
my cousins so badly and grieve with them, but they hate being the center of attention. With how
overwhelming everything was, all they wanted was some sense of normalcy during this
incredibly sad time. They are so disciplined that they chose to still go to school that week. Seeing
my cousins spread their father's ashes into his grave was easily one of the most heartbreaking
moments of my life. Something they should never have had to do at such a young age. I
remember seeing them grasp onto my aunt as she cried. I was so proud to see how strong and
supportive they were. I check in with my cousins as often as I can, but the time difference makes
it very difficult. As we were at the airport for our flight back home, I remember seeing some
people wearing masks and stubbornly thinking that they were being paranoid for no reason.
Little did I know, one week later the world would shutdown because of the COVID-19
pandemic.

2
Leading up to March I had been working my ass off for so many months in preparation
for my senior volleyball season. My junior year we lost in the regional championship and lost
most of our roster to graduation. I stepped up and was fully prepared to lead my team to another
shot at winning a regional championship—my life revolved around it. March 12th was the first
practice of my senior season. I didn’t know it then, but that day was also the last practice of my
high school volleyball career. Schools all across the country temporarily postponed in-person
classes as a precautionary measure. At first, it was just supposed to be three weeks, then three
weeks turned into just until the end of April and then my high school called the year. No senior
season. No regional championship. No prom. No real graduation. I have trouble putting words
together to describe how devastated I was. I felt like every ounce of effort I put in towards
volleyball went to literally nothing. I’ve never worked so hard for something in my life, not even
remotely close. Missing out on my senior season is something I will never get over. I am lucky
enough to be playing in college but I would trade anything to get that senior season back.
After finding out there was no chance of me having a senior season, I had no motivation
to do anything and I don’t think I smiled for weeks. On May 3rd, my mom came into my room
and woke me up around 7:30am which was way earlier than I intended on waking up. She told
me that one of my best friends' mom unexpectedly died from cardiac arrest. I was completely
blindsided by this news and knew I had to help him. My friend ended up living with me for a
week until his siblings could find somewhere for him to live. He, like many kids from my town,
grew up in single parent homes in extreme poverty and have no one helping them stay on track.
It was really stressful having him live with my family right after his mom passed away, because
we wanted to make sure we were doing everything to help him in that unimaginable situation.
Losing my senior season was still so fresh and painful but during that week my problems became

3
so much less important than what he was going through. Some things are much bigger than
sports, but without sports I would have never met him and would not have been able to help him.
Part of me feels like I still haven’t closed the high school chapter of my life yet. I should
have gotten the opportunity to showcase all of my hard work on the volleyball court for my
senior season. I should have gotten the opportunity to take my girlfriend to prom. I should have
gotten the opportunity to walk across the stage and get my diploma in front of my parents. It
pains me to think about all the other little memories that I missed out on. The craziest part about
how badly this year has gone is that 2020 is not over and it could get even worse. Thinking back
to my early memories of 2020 literally feels like ages ago. I have high hopes that 2020 will get
better and the good will outweigh the bad.

                    <text>Arianna Vessicchio
My Experience in Quarantine
On October 18, 2020, at 7:30am after going to bed only a few hours earlier, I awoke to
the sound of my roommate’s voice, “Arianna, Arianna”. I looked over to her bed less than six
feet away from mine and see her on the phone trembling. After several minutes of me half-asleep
wondering what is going on, she murmurs, “I tested positive”. I quickly searched through my
phone and saw I tested negative. Although I was negative, I had been with my roommate all
night, sharing drinks, and sitting close to one another. I was convinced I would come out positive
too in the next couple days, so I put on my mask, gave her a hug and she was out the door to go
home within just a few minutes. I knew I was going to have to quarantine for 14 days and I
thought contact tracing would be calling me shortly. I packed my bags and woke up my other
friends who had been with my roommate the night before and was all ready to go before 8am. I
was nervous, but believed I would be in a suite with two of my best friends for the next 14 days,
so it would all be okay. This moment stays engraved in my mind.
Little did I know at the time, quarantining at school was not going to be as seamless as I
thought. Contact tracing did not call me until 10:30am. They sent me to wait a half-hour in line
to get a COVID test just to be turned away because of miscommunication in the health center. I
did not get a call from Residence Life until 3pm and they sent us to the basement of a freshman
dorm with random roommates. We had to grab all our belongings in 2 trips which meant I could
not bring the things that made me feel most comfortable, such as my mattress pad and extra
blankets. From the arrival in our quarantine dorm, it was phone call after phone call, to every
school administrator and our parents. My 2 friends and I gathered in 1 room crying because of
the situation we were in. We wanted answers and we were not getting them. It was extremely

hard to focus on schoolwork, and some of my teachers were not as relaxed as others, causing me
more stress to get in work that night.
I never realized how stressful getting necessities were until I had to have someone do
everything for me. For the first 24 hours, we had one small water bottle per person and no place
to get more water. Our food arrived at random hours and had to be eaten cold because we had no
refrigerator or microwave for the first couple days. Being someone that lives off the endorphins I
get from going for a daily run, I was limited to running back and forth on the .02-mile backyard
with a mask on. On top of that, we did not know if we had COVID because we were getting
mixed information on when we would be able to get a test. We were the trial group to what
quarantine would look like to many others in the coming weeks as the college still was working
out the kinks.
As the days went on, the conditions got worse. It was nerve-wracking to have new girls
moving into the floor, filling up the floor to almost 20 girls sharing 2 showers, 2 toilets and the
hardest part, 1 refrigerator. I did not know how close of contact the new girls had come in with
people who had COVID and how scared I should be that I was living in such close quarters with
them. They could be the ones causing my quarantine time to reset. Additionally, the more meals
they had to prepare for the floor caused more trouble for me because it was hard to keep track of
my many allergy and dieting restrictions, so meals were sometimes messed up or not delivered to
me when other the girls got theirs. I never expected that quarantine would take such a toll on my
mental health. I did yoga every day and stair workouts to try to relieve the stress, but I was
sleeping restlessly at night.
Towards the end of the week, it came down to the decision of when I was going to
choose to take a test. If I got an extra test and it came back negative, I would have to go home.

Luckily, I was well informed on incubation periods and my risk of coming up positive in the
second week because of the Honors disease colloquium I took this semester. Through reading a
book on COVID-19 and doing research on the incubation period during class, I learned that it
was unlikely I would test positive during the second week because the average incubation period
was 5-7 days. It becomes highly unlikely for me to test positive if I were to receive a negative
test after day 10. We also learned that the COVID tests are not advanced enough to provide a
definite answer, so it is still important that I quarantine the full 14 days. After talking to my
parents about the even greater risk I was put at for catching COVID from the new girls moving
in, we decided I would come home if I tested negative at the end of the week.
Luckily, I tested negative and after 7 days in the basement of Lakeside, I was able to go
home. Although I was stuck in my room and did not have my friends with me, being home
boosted my mental health. I was able to go on walks and runs around my neighborhood (with a
mask on of course!) and my friends from home came to deliver me snacks and candy. I got
another test around day 10 and I was still negative. Not only myself, but all my roommate’s
contacts tested negative and never got COVID. This was crazy to me as I had been convinced at
least one of us caught it. This made me realize COVID does not spread as easily as the media
perceives it, and there are so many other factors that create a positive test.
Using my knowledge from the disease colloquium and being able to discuss this matter in
class due to the small class size and openness of my teacher to talk about topics that interested
us, I was able to come up with some theories as to why none of my roommate’s contacts ended
up with COVID. First, my roommate could have very recently caught the virus that she was not
yet shedding it. Since she did not get symptoms until a few days after her positive test, she was
considered asymptomatic at the beginning. It is much less likely for an asymptomatic person to

spread the virus. This is true for many diseases such as the different types of flu and other
coronaviruses. Given this info, it is important to remember COVID still does have a higher
transmission rate than most other viruses and combined with it being not as deadly as something
like Ebola, this is why it has been able to sustain in the human population for so long now. My
second theory relates to the many factors it takes to come together which make someone catch a
virus. A simple exposure is not enough. These factors can include the environment
(indoor/outdoor ventilation, weather), host factors (age, infectiousness, severity of illnesses),
socio-economic factors (crowding during meals, shared spaces), and contact pattern (proximity
to index case, time of contact, contact frequency, activity, duration of exposure). During class we
looked at a Venn-diagram illustrating how all 4 of these factors must come together for someone
to catch the virus after being exposed. It is quite possible that none of these factors ever came
together quick enough during the time my roommate’s contacts were exposed to her. My last
theory relates directly to me and my situation before coming back to school. I worked at a golf
course all summer where there were little to no COVID regulations in place. I did not wear a
mask, shook people’s hands and touched their belongings. I believe with the amount of people I
came into close contact with this summer, I could have possibly gotten COVID and had
antibodies in my system still when I was exposed to my roommate. During class, we researched
antibodies and the ability to get COVID twice. As a class, we found current research showing
that antibodies stay in the system for at least 3 months after getting COVID. Since I was not
tested all summer, there was no way to know if I had COVID 2 months prior to my roommate’s
positive test.
Prior to taking this class, I did not think COVID or the diseases we learned about would
ever affect my life, until it did. It was very helpful during my quarantine process to have weekly

meetings to discuss the updated information relating to COVID. I believe the knowledge I have
gained will help me as I continue my studies in the medical field to someday become a physical
therapist.

                    <text>Alana Gartenberg
As we approach 10 months of living in a pandemic, some part of me still can’t
comprehend that all of this is real. I remember starting my first spring semester at Springfield
College in January 2020, and people began to discuss the virus. However, at this point, everyone
more or less believed it would stay in China, and no one really took it seriously or thought much
of it. We all just went about our daily lives. When living on a college campus, it’s difficult to
keep up with the news unless you make an active effort to. Almost all of my news about the
virus was coming from Instagram, and most of the posts were memes. The majority of us didn’t
take this seriously until March approached. There were cases in the United States, and rumors of
a lockdown. With campuses shutting down across the country, it seemed that Springfield
College was next. That became official during a large meeting in the Dodge Room on the
second floor of the Union. It felt like the entire student body attended this meeting, with all of us
anxious to find out the fate of our semester. It was ironic to hear President Cooper talk about
how the virus spreads easily when we were all cramped in this room. Students were sharing
seats and many were in the back of the room standing. I was ignorantly happy when I found out
that we would be getting an extra week of spring break. I thought I’d get an extra week at home
with my family, and then I would be able to come back to finish my semester. No one could
have predicted what was to come.
Explaining this pandemic is challenging. I believe it means something different for
everyone. For some, it meant finally having some extra time to workout, spend time with their
family, start a new hobby such as baking, watch Tiger King, or practice self-care. However, for
others, it meant loneliness and sadness being isolated from loved ones. Many lost members of
their families, some not even having the opportunity to say goodbye. People lost their jobs and

businesses. For me, the pandemic meant many things. I was lucky enough to be one of the
people who started working out and took up baking. Although my sadness wasn’t as severe as
those who had monumental losses, there were still challenging times. It was hard not seeing my
friends and my boyfriend. Long distance relationships are hard enough without a global
pandemic going on.
For everyone, the pandemic meant adjusting and adapting to a new normal. Students all across
the country had to start using Zoom and other similar platforms to get their education. Everyone
had to get used to seeing loved ones living outside of their household on a phone or computer
screen. While the pandemic may not have tragically affected everyone, I guarantee that
everyone was affected in some way and had to adapt to a new lifestyle. There is so much gravity
to this pandemic: no matter how much you try to ignore it, as many do, it’s real, and it takes a
toll on everyone sometimes.
When I signed up for a Human Disease colloquium in spring 2020, I had no idea how
relevant it would be to today’s world. The first book we read for this class was COVID-19: The
Pandemic that Never Should Have Happened, and How to Stop the Next One. There were times
when living on campus was stressful and confusing, so it was nice to come to class every week
and not only discuss the book, but also what was happening on campus and around the country.
One of the most valuable things I learned is the importance of listening to scientists and
epidemiologists. The world was extremely underprepared for a coronavirus pandemic despite
epidemiologists saying since the SARS outbreak of 2002 that evidence pointed to a coronavirus
surfacing. Scientists have been warning for decades that this was going to happen, and if
government officials around the world would have listened, COVID-19 likely would have been
much less severe. Reading this book helped me realize that more needs to be done in terms of

preparing for all different kinds of viruses. Experts warned about lack of preparation, and the
few countries that did have pandemic plans focused solely on the flu when there are so many
other viruses, such as coronaviruses, that can and will emerge and put individuals in danger.
Even with these plans in place, many countries failed to stockpile or acquire even the most basic
essentials required to make the plans work. If a worldwide pandemic does not inspire future
preparedness, I don’t know what will. Something needs to be done because the effects could be
catastrophic if we do exactly what has been done in the past. I gained so much knowledge taking
this class, and all I can do is take what I have learned and try to educate those around me and
hope that countries will start taking pandemic precautions sooner rather than later.

                    <text>A Voice From 2020
How can I begin to characterize an event in our lives that is so far from being
over? Being in the middle of a pandemic is unlike any experience I have ever had. The
virus has no sympathy. It does not pick and choose who it affects but instead invades
any person that it can reach. This has resulted in numerous months of isolation and
loneliness for a lot of people. Yes, thanks to technology we can still communicate with
friends and family through a screen, but this is no substitute for face-to-face interaction;
something that we previously took for granted. Schools began to close in the middle of
March and since then there have been multiple waves of the virus. Now it is December
and another major wave has hit the country, but despite this, the administration of a
vaccine has started, and the storm cloud that has cast a gloom over the entire world for
the past year seems to slowly be lifting.
Covid-19 has caused so many aspects of my life to be uprooted. The end of my
senior year in high school was basically canceled: no prom, no spring track season, and
a graduation ceremony with only 20 out of the 400 students in my graduating class. I
already felt like I was living in a dystopian society, but little did I know that this was the
tip of the iceberg in terms of normal aspects in my life that would be taken from me.
Every kid dreams of going to college, to finally live on their own with no parental
guidance. All of my ideas of what I imagined my college experience to be like were
immediately thrown out the window. Masks had to be worn everywhere besides my own
dorm room. Walking around campus I could not make out the faces behind the masks.
In my double dorm room, besides me and my roommate, only two others could be in
there at a time. My soccer season was modified to the extent that we played zero

games and practiced only three days a week. School did not feel like school. I rolled out
of bed for my 8 am class at 7:59 am only to go sit at my desk, flip my laptop open, and
click on a link to a Zoom meeting, still in my pajamas and wrapped in a warm blanket.
Even that was more than I had to do. I could have just logged into Zoom from my bed,
but knowing myself I would not have been able to focus on school and might have even
drifted off to sleep during a class if I did that.
Despite all of these changes that no one expects to have to endure when going
to college for the first time, I was still able to make new friends, socialize safely on the
weekends, learn a lot, and play the sport I love. This all ended abruptly though when at
the end of October, all members of Gulick Hall, where I lived, were quarantined and two
days later all classes went remote. Students were given the option to stay on campus or
to go home until the start of the spring semester. Most everyone chose to go home, as
did I. This sudden change caused my final days of living at school for the fall semester
to be filled with stress. On top of the normal anxiousness that I was already feeling, my
roommate found out that she was in close contact with someone that had tested
positive. This made me wonder if I should go home or not. My mind was swirling with
questions. Should I go home and risk bringing the virus to my family? Should I stay and
be quarantined for two weeks in Gulick without my friends as they were moving back
home? My parents made the decision for me: I was coming home. I got a Covid test on
the morning of the day I moved out. I had to move every last thing out of my dorm room
by myself as my parents were not allowed to enter the building. On my ride home I wore
a mask as I had spent the last 48 hours in my ten-foot by ten-foot dorm room with a
potentially infected person.

At home, I immediately quarantined myself in my room, not knowing if my
exposure to the virus had caused me to become infected. I received my test results the
next day and I was negative, but my roommate also found out that she was positive that
same day. The tricky thing about Covid is that even though I tested negative, the health
center told me that a positive test result could still be produced up to fourteen days after
I was last exposed. For the next two weeks, I lived in my bedroom, leaving only to walk
the five steps out my door and into the bathroom, or to go for runs around my
neighborhood. My parents brought food up to me on a tray and I would even eat with
my door open so I would feel like I was at least partly eating with my family. I tried to
keep myself occupied so I would not think about the high possibility that I was infected,
but it was difficult not to let my mind wander. After one week of quarantine, I tested
negative again. I loosened my restrictions a little to allow myself to go into the kitchen to
make my own food but was still wearing a mask in my own home. On the last day of my
two-week quarantine, I went to get tested for the third and final time. This was the
moment of truth. The next morning I woke up to a negative test result. I was lucky. I feel
like I escaped not only Covid but the long-term effects from it that no one knows about
yet.
I feel grateful that I was able to learn about Covid-19 while I was living through it.
This class has taught me so much about infectious diseases. I was able to gain a better
understanding of the microscopic world around me. What I have learned is something
that I will be thinking about years from now, even in the absence of Covid. A major
takeaway from this class for me is how nations across the globe can be better prepared
and equipped to take on a virus, like the coronavirus, before it manifests itself in the

human population. In six years I will be graduated from the physician assistant program
here at Springfield College. Who knows, maybe I will travel to underdeveloped nations
and teach fellow medical professionals how to prepare for pandemics before they
emerge, and it will all be thanks to this class.

Status Report

2

An R0 > 1 means outbreaks are likely
(R0)

5.0 - 6.0 (in China before control measures)
2.0 - 2.5 (with social distancing control measures)

3

4

Infected
individuals
can spread
the virus up to
2.3 days
before they
have
symptoms

The R0 is
affected by
the amount
of social
contact in a
population

Primary means of
transmission

Secondary means
of transmission

Possible means
of transmission

Respiratory droplets
fall on surfaces that
are later touched by a
susceptible individual

When R0 > 1, preventing one infection has an exponential impact.
Physical distancing remains an important strategy because people
spread the virus before they develop symptoms.

7

8

Preliminary data
suggest that 20% of
COVID-19 cases are
severe, but this
number may be lower
if mild cases are
undetected.

Case fatality rate (CFR) varies by country;
likely overestimated due to lack of testing

These ”mild”
cases include
individuals who
are extremely ill
with flu-like
symptoms

9

10

Preliminary US data from February and March:

Mortality rates varies by age and ethnicity, and
increase when hospital capacity is exceeded

11

20-30% of recognized cases aged 20-65 were hospitalized

Public Health Working Group: SARSCoV-2 Status Report

True proportion of severe/fatal cases will be
unclear until antibody surveys are completed

5/20/20

Level of risk relative to other diseases is not clear
Difficult to characterize because of uncertainty in R0 and CFR

“This study will give us a
clearer picture of the true
magnitude of the COVID-19
pandemic in the US by
telling us how many people
in different communities
have been infected without
knowing it,” said Anthony
S. Fauci, M.D., NIAID
director.

Pink box reflects estimates from
February.
Green box reflects current
estimates, with a lower CFR and
a higher R0.

“These crucial data will
help us measure the
impact of our public health
efforts now and guide our
COVID-19 response moving
forward.”

13

14

We can move into the
“new normal” when
the population has
herd immunity.
Vaccination will likely
be necessary to
produce this level of
immunity in the
population.
Recent research
suggests that COVID19 infection causes
antibody production,
but it is unclear if these
antibodies confer longterm immunity.

15

e.g., remdesivir, an antiviral drug originally made to fight Ebola

16

NYT article 5/18/20:

Key take-home points
Any physical
contact carries
the risk of
infection,
severe illness,
and death.
This will remain
true until a
vaccine or
treatment is
widely available.

17

State and
federal
governments
will make
recommendatio
ns about when
businesses can
reopen;
individual
businesses will
then make
decisions about
whether the risk
of reopening is
worth the
continuing risks
to their
employees, and
in our case,
students.

Current hot
spots for
infection are
locations with
residential
living (prisons,
nursing homes,
hospitals).

Decisions made
by large
organizations
will have widely
varying impacts
for different
portions of the
population.

Experts expect
a second wave
of infections to
hit the US in the
fall.

Older individuals,
individuals with
chronic
conditions, and
Black Americans
will be put at
especially high
risk by the
decision of large
organizations to
open.

Springfield College Health Science Students Assist with COVID-19 Data Project

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –Students from the Springfield College Health Science major have
been working on a national project to track the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United
States. Students Yue Li, Ashley Tanner, Alexandra Christine Jones, Brenna Keefe, Dhruvi
Patel, and Callie Dowd have been led by Springfield College faculty members in assisting with
this very important project.
Participating students are responsible for tracking historical data, collecting daily data, as well
participating in special interest team projects that include computer based automation, data
visualization, infectious disease, policy, social media, and fundraising.
“A group of Springfield College Health Science students are participating in an internship that
involves collecting data to track the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States,”
said Springfield College Assistant Professor of Public Health Sofija Zagarins. “This internship
is part of the COVID-19 Data Project, which is a collaboration of over 200 students,
statisticians, epidemiologists, healthcare experts, and data scientists throughout the country.”
BroadStreet’s COVID-19 Data Project is a collaboration of more than 40 colleges and
universities throughout the United States, that are committed to having the most accurate,
community level data about the COVID-19 positive tests and fatality rates. Along with
Springfield College, colleges and universities also taking part are Harvard, Yale, Boston
University, Temple, and Duke University just to name a few.
Through BroadStreet’s COVID-19 Data Project Internship, health care professionals use the
provided data to help improve how they spend their time and resources on improving
community health.
“We have been humbled by the outpouring of support, especially from the collegiate
community,” said the BroadStreet Co-founder Tracy Flood. “We know that right now students
have a unique set of challenges trying to navigate these difficult times, maintaining their
studies, most who are away from home and while adapting to their new normal. Despite this,
we wanted to recognize students who have graciously donated their time and talent to our
project.”

For more information about the project, use the Covid19dataproject.org website to follow
along with information and updates from the participants.
Springfield College is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational institution founded in 1885. Approximately
4,100 students, including 2,500 full-time undergraduate students, study at its main campus in Springfield,
Mass., and at its regional campuses across the country. Springfield College inspires students through the
guiding principles of its Humanics philosophy – educating in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to

The COVID-19 discussion began on campus and word spread fast. Some students were
scared, while others disregarded it and acted as though Coronavirus was just another type of
influenza. I remember going to my Evidence Based Healthcare course twice a week and each
time, the number of cases in the United States went up, without stopping. I was not sure what to
believe at this point. I did not think of it as a big deal until I realized my senior year could
potentially be coming to an end earlier than I had anticipated. Some of my professors were
preparing while others were not sure what to do. Students were scared and professors were trying
everything in their power to tell us that it was going to be okay. I will never forget looking at the
numbers of confirmed cases and number of deaths worldwide growing rapidly. Those numbers
struck me each time I looked at them. I will never forget looking at the numbers and feeling like
something big was happening and there was nothing I could do to stop it. After the first few
weeks of discussing COVID-19 in my classes, I found myself trying not to listen. There was so
much misinformation surfacing and getting spread around. I knew it was in my best interest to be
prepared for the worst but hope for the best. It was the only thing I could do to keep my sanity in
check.
My feelings were numbed for months; I did not show sadness towards having to leave
school until I had gotten home. President Cooper announced that our spring break was extended
an extra week. This is when I knew. I knew there was no way I was going to be finishing my
senior year on campus. That night we found out in the evening that spring break was extended,
and my entire room was packed up by the next morning. Taking down the decorations from my
wall hit me in a way that I could have never anticipated. Some of my roommates were much
more hopeful than me and did not pack up a single thing to go home until the moment we were
informed that we would not be coming back to campus. For me, I just knew. I knew that my

senior year was being ruined by something that I did not even know the entire premise of. All I
knew is that it was time for me to move on. As I carried my belongings out to my car, almost
every student I passed said the same thing, “you really do not think we are coming back?” and I
answered with the same, emotionless, “not at this rate.” I went home for spring break and ended
up being able to go on a trip to Jamaica. I knew this was the last time I would have freedom to be
in public with other individuals for a long time. As I returned home from my trip, that is when
everything hit me. I finally realized how impactful this virus was on the entire world. I was
scared and did not know what else to do than to break down and give up.
I have learned a large sum about myself throughout this entire experience so far. I have
learned that in times of such uncertainty, I can get through it and come out stronger than when it
began. My mindset has changed drastically over the past few months and I have become stronger
for my family. It is not every day that I have to worry about something serious or life threatening
happening to my family members. This experience has helped me and hurt me in a plethora of
ways. The most difficult thing for me has been sitting at home alone, day in and day out, while
my entire family continues to go to work. I am left at home worrying from the minute I wake up,
until the minute my family members come home from work. My mother is a home infusion
compounding pharmacist, my father is a state trooper, my brother is a firefighter at Logan
Airport, and my sister is a nurse in the NICU. Although I am proud to say that my entire family
is out there putting their own lives at risk to fight for the lives of others, I am scared. As they go
into work each day, I pray that everything goes as planned and that nothing happens to them or
the people they work with. I am unable to see my siblings during this time and it has been nearly
impossible for me. To think that I cannot even come in contact with those who have been my
biggest support systems for my entire life has crushed me both emotionally and physically. I

have to take precautions at home to keep myself safe so that my parents can remain able to go
into work. My entire life has been altered completely and I had no say in the matter.
One of the biggest things giving me joy during this pandemic has been social media and
technology. Social media has played a major role for countless individuals during this time. I
have been trying to avoid traditional news in order to diminish my risk of becoming disappointed
or being exposed to incorrect news. Using things like Instagram, FaceTime and Zoom have given
me a way to stay connected with my friends while also curating the information I hear about the
pandemic. Social media and technology have been two of the only things, for a large part of the
world, that is keeping individuals afloat. One of my closest friends at home stated that “TikToks
are not saving lives, but they are entertaining people and making people laugh.” I never thought
it would find myself saying this, but some of the only optimism being spread in the world right
now has been through social media and technology.
My aunt has recently been diagnosed with ALS. She was one of the first individuals I
thought of when I realized this is a big problem and I need to be worried. She cannot have nurses
come to her house and she cannot go to her regular doctor’s appointments. My entire family as
well as our entire community has been coming together, as best as we can, to provide support
and comfort for her. Her children have had to learn how to use intravenous medication for her as
just one of the many things they can do to help. It breaks my heart to know that all of the
individuals in the world with preexisting medical conditions do not know what each day will
bring for them.
A typical day in quarantine for me is very different from my usual days at home. I work
out and stay active in hopes of keeping my mind off of things and I do work for school. I clean
and disinfect the house for my parents so that they are able to go to work and feel safe when they

come home. I have been cooking for my family to take pressure off my full-time working
parents. As much as it has been slow and relaxing at home, I have not stopped doing work since
leaving school. Some of my professors increased the course workload making it incredibly hard
for me to complete my degree and be there for my family. That is one of the biggest things I miss
about being on campus. Being able to go my office hours and get advice from my professors
whenever I need it. Emailing back and forth is very different from going to Locklin Hall to get
assistance on my assignments. As a student living with a disability that largely impacts my
academic work, having the resources available on campus was always something I was
incredibly grateful for. I do not think that I took these resources for granted, but I can say with
complete confidence that I missed having them during the last few months of my senior year.
Online learning was different and I truly missed being in a classroom setting, but I am proud to
say I managed to finish college under such unprecedented circumstances.
I feel as though I am cultivating a large amount of resilience through this experience. It
has been hard for me to stay hopeful and optimistic, but I know that my ability to recover and be
strong for my family has grown drastically. I have learned how to become more independent and
reliable at any moment. Each day, there is a new task for me to complete in order to keep my
family safe. No matter if it is something big or something small, I get it done and try to keep an
optimistic attitude. The real test of my resilience has yet to come. I am curious to see how I come
back from this pandemic once it is all over. It will be hard for me to return to my normal ways
once the world is opened back up, but I am hopeful that eventually I will be able to return to my
pre-pandemic self at some point.
There have been so many impressive as well as disappointing responses to the pandemic
over the past few months. I have been impressed, to an outstanding degree, by the way the entire

Springfield College Senior class has come together to support each other during this time. I have
gotten supportive remarks from some of my classmates that I have never even spoken to in
person. The class of 2020 has become stronger than any other graduating class I have ever seen.
This is not because of Coronavirus itself, but rather due to the way we reacted and the way I
know we will come back from it. The night before we left campus was something I will never
forget. We held a “senior day” for all of the spring senior athletes that were unable to have their
own traditional senior day. We laughed, we cried, we danced and we hugged all night until the
sun came up. This response to bad news was an experience that I know will be unmatched for the
rest of my life.
In terms of disappointing responses to this pandemic, the one that has stuck out to me the
most is the individuals in the world that feel as though they do not have to follow the guidelines
put in place by the CDC. It saddens me to know that there are individuals out there that are still
taking this too lightly. If I could show those individuals one thing, it would be the pictures of my
family members, at work, covered head to toe with uncomfortable protective gear so as to keep
themselves safe while saving the lives of others. Even if you are not experiencing the virus
firsthand, it is important to be cognizant of the fact that this is a real problem and the only true
way to combat it is to follow instructions and guidelines put in place by the government and the
CDC.
There are many fears that have been running through my mind over the course of this
pandemic. One that has been scaring me the most is what life is going to look like for the few
years following Coronavirus. I planned to take a year off after college to get a job and then go to
graduate school. Although my plan has remained the same, it has become much more difficult to
follow through with it. Finding a job has been nearly impossible. On top of this, studying to get

into graduate school looks very different. There are far less resources for students to utilize. I
have finally accepted the fact that I have completed my courses and graduated college in the
same home that I started preschool in, and I will most likely be studying and applying to
graduate school from home as well. The community has been forced to adapt to the current state
of the world at a rapid pace, something that not everyone is accustomed to, but also something
we have been forced to do. I have realized that my fears are different from those of others but
everyone’s fears are justifiable. No one should be thinking that they are not allowed to be scared
because someone else may have it much worse than them. We are going through this together
and we will remain hopeful together. My greatest hopes for the future begin right now. I hope
that individuals do not give up. I hope that we remain connected and bond in a way that we have
never bonded before. It is us against one single virus. I want individuals, worldwide, to know
that we can come back from the current situation we are in.
In the near future, I predict that the world with be unable to completely return to life prepandemic. Individuals will remain scared and worried that something bad is going to happen
again. Businesses will be impacted while employees will continue to lose their jobs. On the other
hand, I feel as though we will continue to come together as a community and stay connected. In
the long-term, I predict that the world will create a new norm for a while. Life might not be the
exact same as it was before the Coronavirus outbreak, but it will begin to feel more normal as the
days go on.
If the Coronavirus pandemic could teach the world one thing it would be to open your
eyes and see the underlying problems that are surfacing due to the pandemic. There are so many
problems in this country that many individuals would not be privy to if it were not for
Coronavirus. The individuals and families that are being immensely impacted are the ones that

were struggling the most before this pandemic hit. Keep an optimistic attitude, follow
instructions carefully, and remember that we will get through this. Each day will come and go
with new challenges to face and new problems to fix. This is just one experience, out of so many,
that will make the world stronger and better prepared for what is to come in the future.
