I remember starting my first spring semester at Springfield College in January 2020, and people began to discuss the virus. However, at this point, everyone more or less believed it would stay in China, and no one really took it seriously or thought much of it. We all just went about our daily lives. When living on a college campus, it’s difficult to keep up with the news unless you make an active effort to. Almost all of my news about the virus was coming from Instagram, and most of the posts were memes. The majority of us didn’t take this seriously until March approached. There were cases in the United States, and rumors of a lockdown. With campuses shutting down across the country, it seemed that Springfield College was next. That became official during a large meeting in the Dodge Room on the second floor of the Union. It felt like the entire student body attended this meeting, with all of us anxious to find out the fate of our semester. It was ironic to hear President Cooper talk about how the virus spreads easily when we were all cramped in this room. Students were sharing seats and many were in the back of the room standing. I was ignorantly happy when I found out that we would be getting an extra week of spring break. I thought I’d get an extra week at home with my family, and then I would be able to come back to finish my semester. No one could have predicted what was to come. Explaining this pandemic is challenging. I believe it means something different for everyone. For some, it meant finally having some extra time to workout, spend time with their family, start a new hobby such as baking, watch Tiger King, or practice self-care. However, for others, it meant loneliness and sadness being isolated from loved ones. Many lost members of their families, some not even having the opportunity to say goodbye. People lost their jobs and �businesses. For me, the pandemic meant many things. I was lucky enough to be one of the people who started working out and took up baking. Although my sadness wasn’t as severe as those who had monumental losses, there were still challenging times. It was hard not seeing my friends and my boyfriend. Long distance relationships are hard enough without a global pandemic going on. For everyone, the pandemic meant adjusting and adapting to a new normal. Students all across the country had to start using Zoom and other similar platforms to get their education. Everyone had to get used to seeing loved ones living outside of their household on a phone or computer screen. While the pandemic may not have tragically affected everyone, I guarantee that everyone was affected in some way and had to adapt to a new lifestyle. There is so much gravity to this pandemic: no matter how much you try to ignore it, as many do, it’s real, and it takes a toll on everyone sometimes. When I signed up for a Human Disease colloquium in spring 2020, I had no idea how relevant it would be to today’s world. The first book we read for this class was ​COVID-19: The Pandemic that Never Should Have Happened, and How to Stop the Next One​. There were times when living on campus was stressful and confusing, so it was nice to come to class every week and not only discuss the book, but also what was happening on campus and around the country. One of the most valuable things I learned is the importance of listening to scientists and epidemiologists. The world was extremely underprepared for a coronavirus pandemic despite epidemiologists saying since the SARS outbreak of 2002 that evidence pointed to a coronavirus surfacing. Scientists have been warning for decades that this was going to happen, and if government officials around the world would have listened, COVID-19 likely would have been much less severe. Reading this book helped me realize that more needs to be done in terms of �preparing for all different kinds of viruses. Experts warned about lack of preparation, and the few countries that did have pandemic plans focused solely on the flu when there are so many other viruses, such as coronaviruses, that can and will emerge and put individuals in danger. Even with these plans in place, many countries failed to stockpile or acquire even the most basic essentials required to make the plans work. If a worldwide pandemic does not inspire future preparedness, I don’t know what will. Something needs to be done because the effects could be catastrophic if we do exactly what has been done in the past. I looked over to her bed less than six feet away from mine and see her on the phone trembling. After several minutes of me half-asleep wondering what is going on, she murmurs, “I tested positive”. I quickly searched through my phone and saw I tested negative. Although I was negative, I had been with my roommate all night, sharing drinks, and sitting close to one another. I was convinced I would come out positive too in the next couple days, so I put on my mask, gave her a hug and she was out the door to go home within just a few minutes. I knew I was going to have to quarantine for 14 days and I thought contact tracing would be calling me shortly. I packed my bags and woke up my other friends who had been with my roommate the night before and was all ready to go before 8am. I was nervous, but believed I would be in a suite with two of my best friends for the next 14 days, so it would all be okay. This moment stays engraved in my mind. Little did I know at the time, quarantining at school was not going to be as seamless as I thought. Contact tracing did not call me until 10:30am. They sent me to wait a half-hour in line to get a COVID test just to be turned away because of miscommunication in the health center. I did not get a call from Residence Life until 3pm and they sent us to the basement of a freshman dorm with random roommates. We had to grab all our belongings in 2 trips which meant I could not bring the things that made me feel most comfortable, such as my mattress pad and extra blankets. From the arrival in our quarantine dorm, it was phone call after phone call, to every school administrator and our parents. My 2 friends and I gathered in 1 room crying because of the situation we were in. We wanted answers and we were not getting them. It was extremely �hard to focus on schoolwork, and some of my teachers were not as relaxed as others, causing me more stress to get in work that night. I never realized how stressful getting necessities were until I had to have someone do everything for me. For the first 24 hours, we had one small water bottle per person and no place to get more water. Our food arrived at random hours and had to be eaten cold because we had no refrigerator or microwave for the first couple days. Being someone that lives off the endorphins I get from going for a daily run, I was limited to running back and forth on the .02-mile backyard with a mask on. On top of that, we did not know if we had COVID because we were getting mixed information on when we would be able to get a test. We were the trial group to what quarantine would look like to many others in the coming weeks as the college still was working out the kinks. As the days went on, the conditions got worse. It was nerve-wracking to have new girls moving into the floor, filling up the floor to almost 20 girls sharing 2 showers, 2 toilets and the hardest part, 1 refrigerator. I did not know how close of contact the new girls had come in with people who had COVID and how scared I should be that I was living in such close quarters with them. They could be the ones causing my quarantine time to reset. Additionally, the more meals they had to prepare for the floor caused more trouble for me because it was hard to keep track of my many allergy and dieting restrictions, so meals were sometimes messed up or not delivered to me when other the girls got theirs. I never expected that quarantine would take such a toll on my mental health. I did yoga every day and stair workouts to try to relieve the stress, but I was sleeping restlessly at night. Towards the end of the week, it came down to the decision of when I was going to choose to take a test. If I got an extra test and it came back negative, I would have to go home. �Luckily, I was well informed on incubation periods and my risk of coming up positive in the second week because of the Honors disease colloquium I took this semester. Through reading a book on COVID-19 and doing research on the incubation period during class, I learned that it was unlikely I would test positive during the second week because the average incubation period was 5-7 days. It becomes highly unlikely for me to test positive if I were to receive a negative test after day 10. We also learned that the COVID tests are not advanced enough to provide a definite answer, so it is still important that I quarantine the full 14 days. After talking to my parents about the even greater risk I was put at for catching COVID from the new girls moving in, we decided I would come home if I tested negative at the end of the week. Luckily, I tested negative and after 7 days in the basement of Lakeside, I was able to go home. Although I was stuck in my room and did not have my friends with me, being home boosted my mental health. I was able to go on walks and runs around my neighborhood (with a mask on of course!) and my friends from home came to deliver me snacks and candy. I got another test around day 10 and I was still negative. Not only myself, but all my roommate’s contacts tested negative and never got COVID. This was crazy to me as I had been convinced at least one of us caught it. This made me realize COVID does not spread as easily as the media perceives it, and there are so many other factors that create a positive test. Using my knowledge from the disease colloquium and being able to discuss this matter in class due to the small class size and openness of my teacher to talk about topics that interested us, I was able to come up with some theories as to why none of my roommate’s contacts ended up with COVID. First, my roommate could have very recently caught the virus that she was not yet shedding it. Since she did not get symptoms until a few days after her positive test, she was considered asymptomatic at the beginning. It is much less likely for an asymptomatic person to �spread the virus. This is true for many diseases such as the different types of flu and other coronaviruses. Given this info, it is important to remember COVID still does have a higher transmission rate than most other viruses and combined with it being not as deadly as something like Ebola, this is why it has been able to sustain in the human population for so long now. My second theory relates to the many factors it takes to come together which make someone catch a virus. A simple exposure is not enough. These factors can include the environment (indoor/outdoor ventilation, weather), host factors (age, infectiousness, severity of illnesses), socio-economic factors (crowding during meals, shared spaces), and contact pattern (proximity to index case, time of contact, contact frequency, activity, duration of exposure). During class we looked at a Venn-diagram illustrating how all 4 of these factors must come together for someone to catch the virus after being exposed. It is quite possible that none of these factors ever came together quick enough during the time my roommate’s contacts were exposed to her. My last theory relates directly to me and my situation before coming back to school. I worked at a golf course all summer where there were little to no COVID regulations in place. I did not wear a mask, shook people’s hands and touched their belongings. I believe with the amount of people I came into close contact with this summer, I could have possibly gotten COVID and had antibodies in my system still when I was exposed to my roommate. During class, we researched antibodies and the ability to get COVID twice. As a class, we found current research showing that antibodies stay in the system for at least 3 months after getting COVID. Since I was not tested all summer, there was no way to know if I had COVID 2 months prior to my roommate’s positive test. Prior to taking this class, I did not think COVID or the diseases we learned about would ever affect my life, until it did. It was very helpful during my quarantine process to have weekly �meetings to discuss the updated information relating to COVID. I was undergoing the transition from high school to college. It created some challenges along the way. For example, COVID-19 made it difficult for me to visit some college campuses due to the school closures. Those visits impacted my decision on which college I attended. Despite these challenges, I am glad to be attending Springfield College and am grateful that we are able to live on campus right now. The college is adjusting to the virus in order to keep students and faculty safe. Here are some photos I took during this time. 2 �Move-In Day This photo was taken in August when I moved into my dorm room. During this time, we were only allowed two other people to help us move our belongings into the dorm. Anyone else had to wait in the car. I was still able to move in quickly and I had some time to grab a few extra things at the store with my family for parting ways. 3 �Orientation Photo of a banner we spray painted during orientation. We were dividing into small groups based on which floors we live on in our dorms. All activities were outside and we ate meals together on the grass while social distancing. This photo is of me and my friend right before one of out activities. 5 �Outside Life on Campus COVID-19 has allowed us to spend more time outside than before. We frequently use the outdoor seating in order to social distance. Here is a photo I took while sitting on a bench eating my lunch. The weather was really nice and the sunset was quite pretty. 6 �Art Class There are only a few classes I have that meet in person. Studio in Drawing is one of them. We meet every monday and do some drawing exercises.Here are some piece we hung up during October. There are signs on doors reminding us to wash our hands, hand sanitizing stations, and 6 feet markers on the grounds. One of the most interesting changes is the mask placed on a statue located in the center of campus. For me personally when I look back at how covid affected me I get a really bitter taste in my mouth. It ruined college plans, highschool, and the summer. Although I hate to look at it only negatively, I think you grow as a person in uncomfortable situations so I will try to explain a few positives that it brought me. Throughout this essay I’ll explain, almost in timeline fashion how covid turned everything upside down. The day is march 27th, 2020 and I am sitting in my principal's office getting suspended from school. As I leave the parking lot at about noon on a day where we as students get out at 2:15 I was actually kind of happy I no longer had to be in school. My best friend's truck happened to be in the shop that day so I went back at 2:15 after school to pick him up. Once we got to his house we got an email that stated “due to covid-19 reasons we will be continuing our school year remotely…..”. Those first four words became the basis of about half the information I would receive over the next year. A positive, I no longer had a suspension to serve but my entire senior year had been ended. I was sitting in that office earlier that day not realizing that that was the last time I would ever be in a highschool setting. This was the theme that was starting to develop. I began to have things stript from me due to covid, this was the first of many “due to covid 19s” I would receive. The date is June 6th, 2020 and I am scheduled to graduate. It had been cancelled for a while by then but it was still a big deal to many of us. Following our teachers driving gift baskets to our house for the sole reason of them feeling bad for us, we hopped in the car and went to graduation. However, we wouldn’t leave the car, I could when I first got there to see all of my friends in their caps and gowns in a different parking lot. We drove the snake path that my High school parking lot makes. I passed each grade of teachers I had gone through previously to begin at the highschool as they were lined up throughout the parking lot. By the time I got to the front and past all my teachers it was my turn to step out of the car, walk up to the entrance of the school, grab my diploma, then instantly get back into the car and drive off. I drove off that �day upset with the way everything had turned out. This once in a lifetime event had been destroyed “due to covid 19”. The months of April and some of may consisted of me sneaking out of my house to see people. Basically the whole country was in lockdown “due to covid 19”. I enjoy alone time but was never the one to be alone for days, weeks, and months on end. This was new for me and changed my perspective on a lot of things. This time period changed me in both good and bad ways. I grew so much as a person simply off of having time to reflect but the same thing that made me grow is also what tore me apart. Thinking too much can be evil and when I was in quarantine I saw this for the first time. For the first time in my life I was aware that I was being self conscious and just overall unsure of how to carry myself. I was confused, but all I could do was sit in my room and think some more. This created some dark days, however I can’t dismiss the fact that some of these days gave me the opportunity to figure stuff out. Concepts that I had rejected spending the time thinking about, were now at the forefront of my brain because I had no distractions. I figured out things about the world around me, my friends and family, and most importantly myself. It sucked but I don’t know if quarantine will hinder me when I’m older, I think I grew a lot as a person during this time period. The date is today, Wednesday, October 21st, 2020 and I am sitting in my dorm reading the number of covid related deaths in America. 226,383. Just like that we went from the last day of highschool to now. The number rose so quickly I thought the news station was lying everytime I looked, It would jump 10,000 in a day. However, I’m sitting in my dorm reflecting on how school has gone this year while being in a pandemic. Everytime I leave my dorm I run through a mental checklist. Normally I would just grab my phone and my ID but now I have to remember my mask. If I Forgot it and was caught I would get kicked out of school with no questions asked and no refund. My friends have been getting kicked out of school every other weekend for having their masks over their mouth but not all the way up over their nose which is extremely against the rules. You can’t have more than four people in one room at the same time �but we do probably every day. You always have to look over your shoulder in case there’s an RA and trouble presents itself. The list of things you have to do because of covid is ridiculously long but you get the point. The amount of added stress to our lives because of covid is immeasurable. At college you’re supposed to stress about school and that’s literally the last thing I worry about on a day to day basis. How can I think about what I just learned in my business class? When Donald Trump is ruining our country, the political divide is at its highest in centuries, and there’s a disease killing hundreds of thousands of Americans. “Due to covid” we had to sacrifice a lot. We gave up things that everyone in every year prior to us had had. Mentally it tore us apart and gave the US some of the biggest Depression and anxiety problems it had ever seen, with a suicide rate that was going through the roof. For many people that weren’t as fortunate as I am got completely destroyed by covid, and some that had enough money to go where they wanted and stay there, were unaffected. When I read this i thought nothing of it, I thought so what? It's a small virus across the world. A few weeks later I was sitting in my house completely separated from the life I was living just a month ago. When the lock down first started I was ecstatic, my last year of highschool and i didnt even have to do school work to finish it out. I already wanted to be home all day anyway so how hard would it be to stay home for a month or two? It was over this time I fully realized the scope of the situation I had entered. My experience with the COVID-19 pandemic has been an ever evolving puzzle of new challenges that I along with everyone around me has had to figure out to navigate. The moment my mom told me that school had been canceled for the foreseeable future i could not have been happier. I didn't necessarily hate school, but it being the back half of my senior year I really felt like I was waiting out the last few months anyways. After the first couple of days of the lock down I was slowly learning the scope of this virus. I was seeing news reports of increased cases by thousands everyday. I started to realize the things I had given up to keep ma and my family members safe. Things like hanging out with friends, all the senior year activities like the class trip and graduation were the last thought in anyone's mind. The first few weeks of lockdown are really hard to remember because everyday was exactly the same as the day before. I would wake up mid-day and try to find anything to do around the house that usually consisted of finding something to eat, playing video games with my friends and sleeping. �2 This lifestyle quickly became extremely tedious and extremely boring and i was extremely lucky that I was one of the few people nationwide that was still working a job. There is not much more I can really say about the first few months of the lock down, it was just a repetitive process of waking up and waiting inside my house for any information about what we were to do next. The unique part of my experience with lockdown is that I worked in a grocery store through the lock down. For the first month or two while I stuck at home while everything was closed and still trying to figure out the only business open were the essential business and this included the local grocery store i worked at. Before the pandemic I absolutely hated the tedious nature of my cashiers job but it was good highschool money and something to put on my resume so I reluctantly stuck with it through my senior year of highschool. I quickly learned that I was extremely lucky to have this job. Firstly I was one of the few people still actively working a job and making an income, I felt bad because I didn't necessarily need this job, I didn't have anyone relying on me or a family to provide for but since the store couldn't train any new employees during the pandemic I stayed because it was good money and the store needed all the help it could get. The store offered increased hourly wages for working during the pandemic as an incentive for employees to keep working, but after those first few weeks of lockdown I didn't need the extra pay, I was just happy to have a reason to leave my house. I believe that working this job helped me deal with the stress of the lockdown because it helped me take my mind off the current world epidemic. Some immediate changes I noticed in the store were that everyone had to wear masks and gloves at all times, our shifts increased to six hours and we had to count the number of people that entered the store because we had a maximum capacity. I was never nervous about contracting COVID, i lived in an area with very low case numbers and my brother was and still is an EMT so he was also working through the lockdown so I figured if i get it, I get it. The virus generally didn't seem to do too much to people of my age. The most recent part of my COVID experience has been trying to attend my first year of college both in person and online. I am at this moment a student at Springfield College and �3 while I commend the effort by the school to give the most normal version of a freshman year possible it's definitely been a unique experience. Move in day was spaced out into three days and the tricky part of this part of move in day was that you had to pack for college like you could be sent home by next week. The threat of an outbreak always looms around campus, meaning that we would all be sent home immediately to finish the semester virtually. Exactly half of my classes are in person and online. Personally I find that online classes suck, it's hard to stare at a computer screen in a zoom meeting for an hour but like all other situations in this pandemic we have no choice but to continue to wait to get back to the new normal. The in person classes also suffer, teachers are forced to use online content to teach their classes. They no longer have access to field trips, outside the classroom examples, and even in some classes paper handout to rely on. For example, I'm taking an Event Management class currently and one of the assignments is to put on and host an event. My group has had to postpone and cancel our event because of virus concerts. This makes it harder to really get that critical hands on experience that this usually has to offer. My overall college experiences with the social distancing rules and regulations hasn't been necessarily bad, just another new situation that staff and students have to figure out to the best of their ability. The puzzle of the ever evolving “new normal’ is and will continue to be challenging to navigate and work through. Even though I think the worst of it is behind us, that being the complete lockdown of the country, I believe that it will be years before what we consider normal will come back. After being told I was not going back to college last March, it seemed crazy, and it finally felt like “wow this is very serious”. Not going to school meant no field hockey for me, and I did not know how to feel about that. Living at home meant waking up, logging on to my 8:00 AM Bio lecture every Monday and Tuesday, and debating whether or not to fall back asleep. When I was at school, it was easier, because I was forced to get up and take notes, now it was all just too weird. I would log on one class session just to wait ten minutes to log onto the next, without even having to leave my bedroom. There was no “real” interaction and it didn’t even seem like normal college. Also, having to stay on Zoom with my Bio Lab professor for three hours once a week was not exactly something I’d describe as “fun.” Before, when we attended class in person, my roommate and I would dread heading to class, but hey at least you get to move around and actually look at real stuff with real people around you. Instead, we watched videos of dissections -- Woohoo! The gyms in New York where I live were closed, so I made the most out of my basement exercise area. I would do workouts, and did my best to stay pretty consistent. I am typically one to stay motivated on my own when it comes to exercising and personal health, but it was so different without a team to do it with. Obviously, I couldn’t do as much as I did at school either, not having a full gym, and only a few dumbbells to work with. It got to be a bit boring, but as it got warmer outside, I started going to a field to practice field hockey- but obviously I had to play it alone. My high school turf field was closed from March through September. I had to drive an extra 15 minutes to be able play on a different field that was open. �This did not stop me though, anything to get out of the house after being stuck in it for months was okay by me. By June, my boss called me back to work! I was so excited. I used to dread going to work, and did not like being with all the kids. I work at a daycare and have done so since 10th grade in high school. I always thought it was terrible. But, once I realized I could go back, I was so happy to be able to get out of the house for even work and the interactions. Being in quarantine in the summer was not as bad as the March-May period, because it was warmer outside and just a better atmosphere in general. March, April, May, and the beginning of June kind of really stunk. Once I got to work in June though, and the sun was out, I was feeling much better. All I did was wake up, go to the basement to workout, came home, and sat outside. I always thought “Oh I’ll be in shape for preseason, the gym will open soon!” But no, the gym never opened, and preseason never happened. I was excited for the beginning of August, because my field hockey preseason would be starting at my new school (college). Transferring was scary, and kind of weird during this time but I was still excited to meet everyone. As the preseason date approached, we sadly found out we’d have no season. Therefore, moving in was delayed and we would ultimately arrive on campus with everyone else at the end of August. As the weeks went on my local gym never opened either; Governor Cuomo hadn’t opened them until I left for school. When I finally got to school, it was weird because everyone I met had a mask on -- how would I know what all these new people really looked like? How would I remember everyone’s name? My roommate introduced me to a bunch of people, and she was a returning sophomore, but it was still very weird, and definitely not a normal feeling to me. I met the rest of the sophomores on the field hockey team through my roommate though, and that helped make it �easier to get to know and remember all these new girls. Socializing on weekends though, note – it just doesn’t happen. It feels weird and not exactly like college and remains very different from my freshman experience last year. So far field hockey practices and lift-days are alright. We are grouped into small “pods” of teammates and cannot scrimmage on a full field yet. During lifts we are all spaced out and can only use certain weights assigned to us. Other than that, I am glad to be able to practice with a team, even if we cannot play. Overall, the Coronavirus Pandemic has been a very strange time, and everyone adapts differently. I think without it though, I would not be the person I am today. I wouldn’t wish such a difficult world event or situation to occur at any time-period of period, but if there is a bright side, it did allow me and others that I am close with, to learn and grow from such a challenging event. I would’ve never thought I would go through something quite like this in my lifetime. Sure, I learned about the “Black Death” and the “Spanish Flu”, but they seemed so distant, and seemed so improbable to happen again. Little did I know that mid-March would provide me with a chance to live through it, a global pandemic. The Coronavirus took a lot from me. My senior year of high school was cut short, time with friends had been lost, and it is even effecting my early college life right now. It’s been quite a shift to get used to the “new normal”, as its called nowadays. Wearing protective masks that go over both the mouth and nose, and being six feet apart at the minimum has been quite the hassle in some situations. People aren’t supposed to be cooped up by themselves for weeks and months on end. I know for me, being a socially reliant person, it was very hard to stay inside and not be able to see my friends. When the coronavirus started to become a big problem in mid to late March, school had let the students know it was going to shut down for two weeks. I found this out when I was just getting off the field from baseball practice that Friday. I remember just thinking to myself “it’ll just be a two week vacation and we will be back in school and back to playing baseball”. Little did I know that this “two-week vacation” would turn into something greater. Those two weeks went by and school had let us know that they would give it another week to see if coronavirus would get better. That was the last thing I would hear from the school regarding positive news, everything from then on just went downhill. Me, being a senior at the time, had many questions. I wanted to know if I was going to be able to play my last high school baseball season, or if I was going to have prom or graduation. �McDevitt 2 Of course the school would dodge these questions and leave us seniors in the dark. The rest of my senior year was filled with sitting in my room, taking classes that I didn’t have to try in because the school said they “didn’t count towards my final transcript”. I felt like I was pinned to that room. Sure I had my family, but you can only take so much of your family before they start to get on your nerves. I love them dearly, but quarantine was annoying to say the least. It wasn’t all bad being in quarantine though. I may have said earlier that my family started to get on my nerves, but the quarantine due to coronavirus definitely helped relations with my siblings and parents. Before the coronavirus, I was always super busy and out of the house. Whether it be for sports, friends, or training in other states, I was never home with my family. When the coronavirus happened, and a mandatory quarantine was issued to my state of Pennsylvania, it was a blessing in disguise. The quarantine allowed me to spend more time with my family without any distractions. I definitely am appreciative of how much more I’ve gotten to learn about my siblings, and see a closer connection between me and the three of them. I spent more time with my brother, and that usually doesn’t happen because we are polar opposites of each other. We got to bond over things he likes to do, and I owe that all to the quarantine to get me to get out of my comfort zone and do things with my siblings I wouldn’t have done in the past. Another thing that coronavirus effects is my college life. Since I am playing football at Springfield College, I was supposed to come earlier than all the rest of the students that weren’t involved with a fall sport. Coronavirus kept on pushing that date back to when I got up to Springfield. This made me doubt that I would have camp at all for football, and I didn’t. I had to come up with all the other students, and got my season taken away from me. Again, this was another blessing in disguise, though. With the postponement of the season, I was given the �McDevitt 3 opportunity to keep up with my classes, and stay on top of my grades better than if I had a season. It also allowed me to focus on making friends up here at the college too. If I had football, and if coronavirus wasn’t a thing, I would be too tired to get out there and be social. I would probably be in bed resting up for another practice, or something of that nature. Coronavirus has been effecting the way I live up here at Springfield, though. All of my classes are online, and the way I learn is in person, so it has been a little bit of a struggle to find that motivation. Masks have to be worn at all times, and we can’t even have more than a few people at a time in the common room of our dorms, or I, and the people in the room, would get written up for not following “Covid Guidelines”. The first semester of my college experience hasn’t been all that I was hoping for, but I am managing in this world of the “new normal”. I still am making friends just fine, and having as much fun as I would’ve under normal circumstances. It’s unfortunate, but this is how diamonds are built, through pressure. If I keep my nose to the grindstone, and get out of this situation, the coronaviruses, I will be better for it. I will be better as a person, and I won’t take things for granted like I may have in the past before the pandemic. Coronavirus definitely is as serious today as it was in mid March, but I am a lot better now then I was. I have accepted the fact that the virus would toy with my everyday life, and I would just have to leave it like that. I can only control what I can control, and I can’t control the viruses next move, so why try and worry about that? If I keep doing my part, like socially distancing and wearing a mask, I will get through this, and the world will too one day. The virus taught me to never take a moment and things for granted, because you don’t know what the next day has in store. I had baseball to look forward to in march, but that was taken away. Being in the middle of a pandemic is unlike any experience I have ever had. The virus has no sympathy. It does not pick and choose who it affects but instead invades any person that it can reach. This has resulted in numerous months of isolation and loneliness for a lot of people. Yes, thanks to technology we can still communicate with friends and family through a screen, but this is no substitute for face-to-face interaction; something that we previously took for granted. Schools began to close in the middle of March and since then there have been multiple waves of the virus. Now it is December and another major wave has hit the country, but despite this, the administration of a vaccine has started, and the storm cloud that has cast a gloom over the entire world for the past year seems to slowly be lifting. Covid-19 has caused so many aspects of my life to be uprooted. The end of my senior year in high school was basically canceled: no prom, no spring track season, and a graduation ceremony with only 20 out of the 400 students in my graduating class. I already felt like I was living in a dystopian society, but little did I know that this was the tip of the iceberg in terms of normal aspects in my life that would be taken from me. Every kid dreams of going to college, to finally live on their own with no parental guidance. All of my ideas of what I imagined my college experience to be like were immediately thrown out the window. Masks had to be worn everywhere besides my own dorm room. Walking around campus I could not make out the faces behind the masks. In my double dorm room, besides me and my roommate, only two others could be in there at a time. My soccer season was modified to the extent that we played zero �games and practiced only three days a week. School did not feel like school. I rolled out of bed for my 8 am class at 7:59 am only to go sit at my desk, flip my laptop open, and click on a link to a Zoom meeting, still in my pajamas and wrapped in a warm blanket. Even that was more than I had to do. I could have just logged into Zoom from my bed, but knowing myself I would not have been able to focus on school and might have even drifted off to sleep during a class if I did that. Despite all of these changes that no one expects to have to endure when going to college for the first time, I was still able to make new friends, socialize safely on the weekends, learn a lot, and play the sport I love. This all ended abruptly though when at the end of October, all members of Gulick Hall, where I lived, were quarantined and two days later all classes went remote. Students were given the option to stay on campus or to go home until the start of the spring semester. Most everyone chose to go home, as did I. This sudden change caused my final days of living at school for the fall semester to be filled with stress. On top of the normal anxiousness that I was already feeling, my roommate found out that she was in close contact with someone that had tested positive. This made me wonder if I should go home or not. My mind was swirling with questions. Should I go home and risk bringing the virus to my family? Should I stay and be quarantined for two weeks in Gulick without my friends as they were moving back home? My parents made the decision for me: I was coming home. I got a Covid test on the morning of the day I moved out. I had to move every last thing out of my dorm room by myself as my parents were not allowed to enter the building. On my ride home I wore a mask as I had spent the last 48 hours in my ten-foot by ten-foot dorm room with a potentially infected person. �At home, I immediately quarantined myself in my room, not knowing if my exposure to the virus had caused me to become infected. I received my test results the next day and I was negative, but my roommate also found out that she was positive that same day. The tricky thing about Covid is that even though I tested negative, the health center told me that a positive test result could still be produced up to fourteen days after I was last exposed. For the next two weeks, I lived in my bedroom, leaving only to walk the five steps out my door and into the bathroom, or to go for runs around my neighborhood. My parents brought food up to me on a tray and I would even eat with my door open so I would feel like I was at least partly eating with my family. I tried to keep myself occupied so I would not think about the high possibility that I was infected, but it was difficult not to let my mind wander. After one week of quarantine, I tested negative again. I loosened my restrictions a little to allow myself to go into the kitchen to make my own food but was still wearing a mask in my own home. On the last day of my two-week quarantine, I went to get tested for the third and final time. This was the moment of truth. The next morning I woke up to a negative test result. I was lucky. I feel like I escaped not only Covid but the long-term effects from it that no one knows about yet. I feel grateful that I was able to learn about Covid-19 while I was living through it. This class has taught me so much about infectious diseases. I was able to gain a better understanding of the microscopic world around me. What I have learned is something that I will be thinking about years from now, even in the absence of Covid. A major takeaway from this class for me is how nations across the globe can be better prepared and equipped to take on a virus, like the coronavirus, before it manifests itself in the �human population. In six years I will be graduated from the physician assistant program here at Springfield College. This gave me ideas so I ubered to Stop -n - Shop and picked up chicken and sausages and other items. Now at that time, the only chicken that I could get was a 10 lbs back of leg quarters. It was a LOT of chicken. I had to separate and clean all the chicken, which turned out to be 11 thighs and 11 legs. So this picture is one of the many chicken dishes I made and froze that night. When I took a flight back to campus, I was worried about potential infection at the airport. In February, things were not that bad. Only a few cases were reported in Massachusetts. Professor told us that situation may get worse in the recent future. We never thought the semester would be changed that much then. Everything was still normal. Unluckily that was the night before the storm. In the week before spring break, the situation got really bad. The number of infections increased at a rocket-like speed. I didn’t know that was my last week in class for this semester. Then spring break was extended for another week. All the classes would be online. I couldn’t see my friends and classmates for a long time. As an international student, I moved to senior suites for the rest of my semester. Luckily I still have a place to live. Thanks to the online class, I didn’t have to get up at 8 AM on most days. But I have to admit that the online class is not as efficient as a normal class. I had a bad memory so I made several assignments overdue. In the quarantine days for the rest of the semester, life was really boring. We had to stay in our room for the whole day. I just hope the pandemic can end soon. If we had to go out, we need to prepare the face mask and sterilized water. Most international flights were canceled so I cannot go home even the semester ended yesterday. I felt helpless and anxious. I may have to stay on campus in the summer. I miss my friends and family so much and I really want to go home. On the campus, the gym and outdoor basketball court were locked.
