<text>The title of my contribution is going to be how I trained in the woods. I think it is a simple title,
but it hammers home the message. The videos are all of me working out in the woods during
quarantine. All of the gyms were closed, so the only way to work out would be to go outside and
do whatever I needed to do. These woods would vary everywhere in northern New jersey. I
enjoyed switching up the scenery and keeping things new. I did everything from run to lifting
logs and punching football pads. My friend Jack was a great force in motivating me during this
tough time. We were both there for eachother to get better, and I do truly appreciate the time I
spent with him. Although my COVID experience was filled with a ton of mental hardship, these
were the experiences I remember the fondest from that year. Anything that was available to me
in public I used to better myself. The videos are of me and sometimes my good friend Jack. The
dates vary from April 2020 into that summer. My name is Casey Allen,
callen4@springfieldcollege.edu.

I really enjoyed looking into all of these archives over this passed unit. Although repetitive with
the questions taking a deep dive into things I would not have probably gotten a chance to look
into was pretty cool. My favorite part is looking into the Springfield Archive and seeing all the
different things that happened in our school's history. It was shocking to see how hypocritical our
humanics message is no offense to Springfield College. The way we handled segregation will
stick with me forever. I also loved the museum of suspended objects. It was really interesting
seeing different things get their meaning back after looking like simply junk. Shows that almost
anything can be made into an archive.

                    <text>Springfield College: COVID-19 FAQs  3/7/20

What do I need to know?
 The novel coronavirus is a newly identified strain of a known virus family
called coronaviruses. The common cold is an example of another strain
of a coronavirus. The novel coronavirus strain in this outbreak causes a
disease called COVID-19.
 As of March 7th 2020, there are NO confirmed cases of COVID-19 in
Western Massachusetts.
 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
your risk of infection is low, unless you have recently traveled to
affected areas or have been in close contact with an individual with
COVID-19.
 If you do experience symptoms, contact Student Health Services at
413-748-3175 BEFORE going to work, attending class, or other group
gatherings.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19, and how can I stay safe?
 Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath and may
appear 2-14 days after exposure.
 There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19.
 The best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure and to follow
everyday preventative actions to reduce the spread of respiratory
diseases, including:
o

Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.

o

Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

o

Frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water for at
least 20 seconds.

o

Regular cleaning and disinfection of household surfaces, including
your cell phone and computer.

 The CDC does not recommend the use of facemasks to protect healthy
individuals.
 You can help protect others by staying home when you are sick, and
coughing or sneezing into a tissue (rather than your hand or elbow) and
throwing the tissue away. If you don’t have a tissue handy, cough or
sneeze into your elbow. Avoid coughing or sneezing near other people.

Springfield College: COVID-19 FAQs  3/7/20

Is it safe to travel?
 The CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to
China, Iran, South Korea, Italy, Japan, and Hong Kong.
 As of March 7th, there are no domestic travel warnings for US residents.


The most up-to-date travel information from the CDC can be found at
CDC Travel - FAQ and Answers and CDC COVID-19 Information for
Travel.

Are study abroad programs and international travel affected?
 Springfield College is carefully monitoring all international locations
where members of the campus community are studying and traveling
this semester.
 As of February 28th, all students studying abroad in Italy have been
withdrawn. Students returning from affected regions should self-monitor
for symptoms and not visit campus for a period of 14 days. No other
students studying abroad have been withdrawn.
 As of March 3rd, all upcoming college sponsored international travel is
suspended.
 As of March 3rd, Springfield College advises all students currently
studying abroad to cancel unnecessary travel outside of their host
community.
How is Springfield College responding and preparing?
 Springfield College is following guidance from the CDC and the World
Health Organization (WHO), and is working closely with state and local
public health authorities to develop protocols and to reduce the
possibility of exposure to COVID-19, including recommending a 14-day
self-quarantine for any person deemed at risk of exposure.
 Springfield College has a plan to care for members of the campus
community who need to observe the 14-day self-quarantine period,
including a care plan for the affected persons, a prepared location
removed from other community members for affected persons who
cannot return home, and a communication plan to get information to
those affected.

Springfield College: COVID-19 FAQs  3/7/20

 The most up-to-date information from Springfield College can be found
at http://springfield.edu/coronavirus.
 Springfield College’s Health Center staff are available to answer
additional questions.
What do quarantine and isolation mean?
 Self-quarantine is voluntary, and means that healthy people who
suspect potential exposure do not go to work, school, or public
areas, and avoid other members of their household, including using a
separate bedroom and bathroom if possible.
 Mandatory quarantine could be enforced and involves the same
instructions to affected persons.
 Isolation occurs when confirmed cases of COVID-19 are separated from
others for the duration of their illness (until they test negative for the
virus twice 24-hours apart).
 The CDC recommends anyone with potential exposure (including
returning home from an affected area) self-quarantine for 14 days.
Where can I learn more about COVID-19?
 The CDC and the WHO are both excellent resources for comprehensive
and up-to-the-minute information.
 If needed, updates specific to Springfield and Massachusetts will be
posted on the following websites:
o Springfield Department of Health and Human Services
o Massachusetts Department of Public Health
 Johns Hopkins University is maintaining a live map of the COVID-19
outbreak, including global distribution of cases and information on the
outcome of confirmed cases.

                    <text>April 22nd, 2020
Dear Whomever this may concern,

Hi, my name is Christian Ormsby, a freshman here at Springfield College, class of 2023. In the
Spring Semester of my current year, 2020, as we were going on spring break, the COVID-19
crisis started to pick up way heavier than it did before. Current President Mary Beth Cooper
announced to all students Wednesday, March 11th that we would be having an extended spring
break due to the circumstances of the pandemic. In the announcement, if there would be further
action taken on this pandemic (like closing), she would send out an email during spring break to
inform students and faculty as so.
On the last day of campus, March 13th, everyone on campus had a feeling that we were
going to shut down for the semester. Packing to go home was a very sad experience, but also
very concerning and confusing one. As students, we were unaware if we were coming back or
not, so there was an underlying question as to how much stuff to bring back to our house and
what we should leave back in the dorm room.
Eventually leaving, we later found out spring break week that we would be moving
virtually/online permanently for the rest of the spring semester. As teachers started to prepare for
online learning, I was preparing to restart a previous job at the Shoprite of Croton, located in
Croton-On-Hudson, New York. Now, this is Westchester county which is a hotbed for COVID19.
The experience of online schooling, work and caring for my family, specifically mom is
definitely a fascinating one. First, seeing how grocery stores have changed during this time is
crazy. There are lines mostly everyday to enter the store that are long, limiting the amount of

people in and out. Workers direct you as to what register to go to in order to check out your
groceries, as well as coupons, customer service and returns being postponed. Direction flow for
the aisles in the store is located on the floor, directing customers the correct way to go (although
no one listens to it). As classes switched online, only one class requires weekly meetings while
the others either don’t meet online, or meeting online is optional. All work is submitted by a
deadline, however in circumstances teachers will give extensions. This was seen first hand by me
as well, as my mother was being tested for the virus for about a week. She had shortness of
breath one day, went to urgent care and they tested her. As she was being what we call during
this time “quarantined”, I was taking care of her, getting the groceries, going to the bank and
much more. Luckily the test results for COVID-19 came out negative, however still to be safe I
remain taking care of her. School, work, and taking care of my mom gives me a great balance
during this time. Honestly, without work, school and taking care of family, I would be sitting
around doing nothing all day, which pains me to say. This experience is very benefical and has
opened my eyes to alot more of the world around me. Your average workers, such as grocery
store workers or retail workers are now way more appreciated than they have been before.

                    <text>Briana Tovar
When COVID-19 first started to affect the United States I remember in class checking the
John Hopkins tracking map when there were only a couple hundred cases here. Professor
Zagarins at the time told our class this virus had the potential to seriously affect the rest of our
semester, but we all thought that was crazy. Soon though the cases went from hundreds to
thousands, to tens of thousands, and now hundreds of thousands. When we saw the cases
increasing so fast class times started to be filled with only questions about COVID-19 and what
this meant for us. The night they announced we would have an extended spring break I realized
how serious this was and the next day I packed up my entire dorm. They did not say we wouldn’t
be returning after spring break yet but I live all the way in Arizona and I knew if we did not
come back there would be no way for me to come and pack my things, so I had to prepare for the
worst, which ended up being the outcome. I couldn’t even be sad or scared because I was so
overwhelmed and stressed over packing and midterms. From the night we found out about the
extended spring break till the next day when I boarded my airplane I had not slept, took two
midterms and packed everything I had to move back across the country. Once I was home things
got much worse with the virus and it officially became a nationwide pandemic. It took some
adjusting to doing work at home but both my parents were still working which minimized
distractions. My body was also still on east coast time so I was waking up three hours earlier
than I normally would have and this was extremely beneficial to my mental health and be as
productive in the day as I could given the circumstances. I think this pandemic has taught me
how to make the best out of whatever you are given and being quarantine is hard yes, but if you
give yourself a plan for each day and get into a routine it will be much more doable than you

might think. Now that classes have ended it is a little harder to fill my day and keep busy but as
of now the biggest difficulty is finding a job, just like everyone else I am sure. Things at home
are still almost all closed and what is open is fully employed basically everywhere. I think out of
this pandemic though we as a country will come out stronger, and hopefully wiser.
One thing I noticed here at home is how easy it is to get a test in comparison to other
states, this might be because we have a lot less cases per capita and maybe we have not hit our
peak yet, but I feel as if we have all needed resources available here. One thing that is
disappointing throughout this time is the amount of people who truly just don’t care about the
pandemic and aren’t taking it seriously. These people I feel are the ones that are going to prolong
the reopening and cause for a potential second peak. My biggest fear in that would be that we are
not able to return in the fall. I chose Springfield because of all it has on campus to offer and the
type of environment it is and it would be devastating if we could not return because of others
negligence in helping flatten the curve. With that being said I am also fearful of the return in fall
and what that will mean for spread of COVID-19. I believe this pandemic will affect the nations
population for years to come in the way we interact with others and how seriously we take our
health. I believe some have found this to be dramatic and will not change or do not care but I do
not believe that is the majority. I hope everyone was able to take something meaningful and
valuable from these hard times and hopefully make something positive come out of it.

COVID-19 Pandemic

This past year has been full of crazy, unexpected events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
When the first case of corona came to the US, I wasn’t aware of how large of an impact it would
have on our country. Not knowing much about the virus, I never thought it would come
anywhere close to myself or the people I know but I was wrong. When corona first came to the
United States, many of us didn’t really think anything of it, until it was in our own state. During
the last couple of weeks of high school that were in person, it was rare to hear a conversation that
wasn’t about corona. The pandemic was the main topic of many conversations causing anxiety
and worry amongst so many. Not much information was given to any of us students and at the
time no one really knew anything about the virus or how to contain it. The more the cases rose,
the more people freaked out. Massachusetts was one of the first “hot spot” states causing schools
to shut down and almost all jobs switching to online.

With the virus spreading more, my school decided to shut down. One of my teachers
came in contact with a family member who tested positive for corona, and my whole school went
into panic mode. Kids were calling their parents to get dismissed because the staff weren’t giving
us updates on the incident with the teacher. The next day school was cancelled and everyone
believed that we would be back the next week. The next week came around and my school

pushed it back to 2 weeks. Week after week our time off school continued to grow and soon
enough we were told that we weren’t going back to school. Reality hit everyone when we found
out we couldn’t go back to school because of how serious COVID was getting in our state. No
prom, no normal graduation, no senior trip, no awards night, and so many other missed events.
My school was not prepared to switch to online classes, so we had a break from school for
almost a month before they figured out the situation with classes and teaching online.I still ended
up having club volleyball practice after the fact until one night our coach told us it would be our
last practice for a while and maybe even for the rest of the season. My teammates and I couldn’t
believe the news and kept questioning our coaches about our season, but it was unknown what
the future would hold. At this point no one knew how to deal with the situation at hand. Stores,
restaurants, business, etc all shut down and at this point nothing felt real. Strict quarantine rules
and curfews were set in place for almost all residents in MA and we were forced to wear a mask
everywhere we went. Being a hot spot state, masks were required everywhere unlike the southern
states who had the option to wear one. Although rules were being followed, the number of
positive tests rose and the death rate continued to increase. The virus was untamable and
everyone believed it would get worse before it got better.

The governor of Boston kept pushing back quarantine week after week with no set date
as to when we were going to get back to normal. We lived day by day without any answers and
constantly stayed on our toes waiting for permission to leave quarantine. After a few months of
strict quarantine, the rules started to slowly lift. Stores started to slowly open with a certain
amount of customers shopping at once, and long lines waited outside for hours on end.
Restaurants opened to take out and you had to order through online services only.

Just as we were making a positive turn by slowly coming out of quarantine and isolation,
another curve ball was thrown throughout the world. We were hit with the unwarranted death of
Breonna Taylor in her own home. This African American woman was sleeping in her home
when plain clothed police invaded her apartment without a warning believing there was a
suspect, but the suspect had already been apprehended and it wasn’t the correct building. This
ignited the start up of the Black Lives Matters Movement with protests and petitions throughout
social media and news outlets across the country. Not long after this incident another instance of
police brutality took place. An African American man, George Floyd, was strangled to death in
police custody which was caught on video and spread worldwide. This sparked many peaceful
protests and cities across the country, some which resulted in violence on both sides of the
protesters and authorities. It got to a point where, even in peaceful protests, authorities would
take extreme measures against peaceful protesters by tear gassing crowds and shooting rubber
bullets. Not only did this cause a bigger rift between authorities and people of color, but it
sparked the BLM movement which became world wide. The articles and visuals shared on social
media were eye opening to me. Although I am a person of color in a predominantly white town,
my brothers and I never experienced anything like what we were seeing on the news. Growing
up my mom would always remind my brothers to stay cautious, “act appropriately” and stay safe
when going out especially at night time. My brothers, who are tall black males, like listening to
loud music while driving and occasionally wear durags to protect their hair, which is a part of
black culture. To police and society this is a stereotypical representation of a black man. Little do
they know, they are smart respectful men who have done so much for their community and
school. Being the younger sister of my three brothers, I was worried for their safety after seeing

so many instances where black males were killed for the slightest issue. My mom, brothers and I
attended a few protests to stand up for minorities who are being oppressed in the criminal justice
system. This was a big part of my quarantine and taught me so much about the world we live in
today.
In all 2020 has been a crazy year with corona and the Black Lives Matter Movement. All
the ups and downs this year has taught me a lot about myself and the insane world that we live in
today. I never thought I would experience living through a pandemic, I would’ve never thought
I’d experience half of what I’ve been through this year.

                    <text>COVID-19 Reflection

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was attending boarding school in Florida, and
we had just finished basketball season. I live in Bermuda, so I had to take two flights to get home
for spring break. Everything was pretty normal on my way home, as travel had not been
significantly impacted by the virus yet. When I got home, I didn’t have to quarantine or take an
arrival test, as I arrived before they introduced those strict measures. I was very lucky because a
week later, everyone entering the country was made to quarantine for two weeks. At first, it was
a lot of fun because I got to see all of my friends who came back home from their schools all
over the world. However, this changed pretty quickly in late March when the first case arrived on
the island, and the government quickly put us into lockdown.

Our lockdown was very strict; people were only able to leave the house on certain days to
get groceries, with very few exceptions. All schools, public parks, tourist sites, restaurants, and
non-essential businesses were closed for the duration of the lockdown. My family was very
lucky because my mom owns an “essential business”, meaning we were allowed to leave the
house any day we wanted to get groceries and go for drives. That being said, the lockdown was
difficult; I’m accustomed to being around people all the time, and it was very strange to be
confined to my house for an extended period of time. At first, I found it kind of relaxing and
peaceful, and I enjoyed having some personal space, as it’s rare when you go to boarding school.
I found it nice to spend time with my brother and my parents being that I hadn’t seen them for
months before the lockdown started. However, as we got further into our lockdown, it became
quite irritating to be in the house with the same people for so long. I’d say that personally, the

worst part of our lockdown was the inability for me to go to the gym; I found this very
frustrating because working out is my way of clearing my mind, and after a while I started to feel
trapped.

The lockdown lasted from late March until May 1st, and when we got out at first things
were very different. Progressing to phase 1 of reopening was very freeing because I was able to
go outside again and see my friends. The first day out of lockdown, my friends and I went to the
beach for the first time in weeks and spent the whole day together. Although most businesses,
restaurants, and shops remained closed, being able to see my friends again was great for my
mental health as I immediately felt less isolated. Bermuda progressed through the phases of reopening very quickly, and by mid-June, we were in phase 4 and COVID free. The airport opened
in early July and life felt pretty normal at home; we didn’t have to wear masks anymore (except
for in the airport) and people were allowed to gather freely without any restrictions or curfew.
After we were completely reopened, the summer festivities went on as usual, and the summer
felt very normal. I was able to work and have a normal summer from July until I left for school
in late August, and everyone on the island was grateful that the government was sable to contain
the virus so quickly.

Before I left for school, I was required to take a pre-departure test so that I could travel.
When I got to the airport on the day of my flight, I was required to wear a mask for the first time
in months for the entire time in the airport and the duration of the flight, which I found to be
extremely annoying. I flew to New York City and stayed in Manhattan for a few days before
driving to Springfield. Immediately after getting off of the plane, it was like I had entered a

different world. Everyone was wearing masks and gloves, and freaking out about the virus. It
was such an extreme contrast from what I had experienced at home. After arriving to New York
City, I could immediately see how different the place was. The streets and stores that were once
crowded with people were almost empty; I couldn’t believe how different it actually was. I
remember walking down fifth avenue and not having to avoid walking into people or navigate a
crowd, and it was such a weird feeling.

When I arrived at Springfield College, I was shocked by how strict the measures here
were. I hadn’t been forced to wear a mask since June, and all of a sudden, I had to wear one
everywhere I went. I found it so strange how panicked everyone was about the virus, since I have
never known anyone who had the virus, or who had any severe complications as a result of it. I
found it particularly strange how we had to wear masks while working out, as I had never done
that before. It is fair to say that I was shocked with the extreme contrast between life at home and
life at Springfield College after arriving here.

In conclusion, Bermuda was not significantly affected by COVID-19, especially in
comparison to America. Therefore, transitioning from somewhere that wasn’t significantly
impacted my the virus to Springfield College was very strange. The strict rules and regulations
we have to abide by are very different from how my friends and family at home are living.
Regardless, I knew before coming that the regulations here would be stricter than I was
accustomed to at home. Overall, this year was not particularly easy for anyone; everyone was
impacted in some way, and I’m grateful that where I come from didn’t experience the worst of
the virus.

                    <text>Alana Gartenberg
As we approach 10 months of living in a pandemic, some part of me still can’t
comprehend that all of this is real. I remember starting my first spring semester at Springfield
College in January 2020, and people began to discuss the virus. However, at this point, everyone
more or less believed it would stay in China, and no one really took it seriously or thought much
of it. We all just went about our daily lives. When living on a college campus, it’s difficult to
keep up with the news unless you make an active effort to. Almost all of my news about the
virus was coming from Instagram, and most of the posts were memes. The majority of us didn’t
take this seriously until March approached. There were cases in the United States, and rumors of
a lockdown. With campuses shutting down across the country, it seemed that Springfield
College was next. That became official during a large meeting in the Dodge Room on the
second floor of the Union. It felt like the entire student body attended this meeting, with all of us
anxious to find out the fate of our semester. It was ironic to hear President Cooper talk about
how the virus spreads easily when we were all cramped in this room. Students were sharing
seats and many were in the back of the room standing. I was ignorantly happy when I found out
that we would be getting an extra week of spring break. I thought I’d get an extra week at home
with my family, and then I would be able to come back to finish my semester. No one could
have predicted what was to come.
Explaining this pandemic is challenging. I believe it means something different for
everyone. For some, it meant finally having some extra time to workout, spend time with their
family, start a new hobby such as baking, watch Tiger King, or practice self-care. However, for
others, it meant loneliness and sadness being isolated from loved ones. Many lost members of
their families, some not even having the opportunity to say goodbye. People lost their jobs and

businesses. For me, the pandemic meant many things. I was lucky enough to be one of the
people who started working out and took up baking. Although my sadness wasn’t as severe as
those who had monumental losses, there were still challenging times. It was hard not seeing my
friends and my boyfriend. Long distance relationships are hard enough without a global
pandemic going on.
For everyone, the pandemic meant adjusting and adapting to a new normal. Students all across
the country had to start using Zoom and other similar platforms to get their education. Everyone
had to get used to seeing loved ones living outside of their household on a phone or computer
screen. While the pandemic may not have tragically affected everyone, I guarantee that
everyone was affected in some way and had to adapt to a new lifestyle. There is so much gravity
to this pandemic: no matter how much you try to ignore it, as many do, it’s real, and it takes a
toll on everyone sometimes.
When I signed up for a Human Disease colloquium in spring 2020, I had no idea how
relevant it would be to today’s world. The first book we read for this class was COVID-19: The
Pandemic that Never Should Have Happened, and How to Stop the Next One. There were times
when living on campus was stressful and confusing, so it was nice to come to class every week
and not only discuss the book, but also what was happening on campus and around the country.
One of the most valuable things I learned is the importance of listening to scientists and
epidemiologists. The world was extremely underprepared for a coronavirus pandemic despite
epidemiologists saying since the SARS outbreak of 2002 that evidence pointed to a coronavirus
surfacing. Scientists have been warning for decades that this was going to happen, and if
government officials around the world would have listened, COVID-19 likely would have been
much less severe. Reading this book helped me realize that more needs to be done in terms of

preparing for all different kinds of viruses. Experts warned about lack of preparation, and the
few countries that did have pandemic plans focused solely on the flu when there are so many
other viruses, such as coronaviruses, that can and will emerge and put individuals in danger.
Even with these plans in place, many countries failed to stockpile or acquire even the most basic
essentials required to make the plans work. If a worldwide pandemic does not inspire future
preparedness, I don’t know what will. Something needs to be done because the effects could be
catastrophic if we do exactly what has been done in the past. I gained so much knowledge taking
this class, and all I can do is take what I have learned and try to educate those around me and
hope that countries will start taking pandemic precautions sooner rather than later.

This was extremely hard because to catch up to someone you had to run faster which meant you would breathe harder. Wearing a mask while catching up to someone was the most miserable feeling. The senior vice president begins by addressing their actions to provide personal protection for colleagues. On top of the installation of plexiglass barriers at check out, UPS shipments of hands sanitizer, lysol wipes, and masks were sent in by CVS headquarters for colleague usage. Next, Kolady goes on to speak of the sick time put in place. For the first time, part-time employees are now being offered 24 hours of paid leave. If a colleague has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher at the onset of their shift, they are allotted 72 hours of leave. Lastly, CVS began offering financial support to colleagues who need extended measures. Those who struggle with childcare are given an additional $100 per day to put towards daycare as well as a relief fund being put in place for those seeking additional financial resources given the circumstances. </text>

<text>Being a commuter and spending limited time on campus prevented me from experiencing much of the uncertainties at our college. However, working at an "essential business" during the pandemic allowed me to experience the many new regulations that continue to change the norms of every day life. On top of the changes addressed in this voicemail my city of employment, Chicopee, continued to implement more regulations to prevent the spread of the virus such as limits on purchases, regulation of what was being sold, reduced capacities of store, and reduced store hours. This calm, reassuring message displays a much different tone than what was experienced in the moment at these essential businesses. The urgency for personal protection led to expedited packages being shipped in multiple times a week in mass quantities rather than once a week yet there still remained a shortage all over the nation. Remaining open caused colleagues to adapt to new policy changes taking place almost each shift. It is questionable if some of the regulations such a plexiglass dividers will ever be lifted. The changes made during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to change the every day regularities we all once experienced and that is emphasized in this file. </text>

Before the spring semester began, the Covid-19 had broken out in China. When I
took a flight back to campus, I was worried about potential infection at the airport. In
February, things were not that bad. Only a few cases were reported in Massachusetts.
Professor told us that situation may get worse in the recent future. We never thought
the semester would be changed that much then. Everything was still normal.
Unluckily that was the night before the storm. In the week before spring break, the
situation got really bad. The number of infections increased at a rocket-like speed. I
didn’t know that was my last week in class for this semester. Then spring break was
extended for another week. All the classes would be online. I couldn’t see my friends
and classmates for a long time. As an international student, I moved to senior suites
for the rest of my semester. Luckily I still have a place to live. Thanks to the online
class, I didn’t have to get up at 8 AM on most days. But I have to admit that the online
class is not as efficient as a normal class. I had a bad memory so I made several
assignments overdue. In the quarantine days for the rest of the semester, life was
really boring. We had to stay in our room for the whole day. I just hope the pandemic
can end soon. If we had to go out, we need to prepare the face mask and sterilized
water.
Most international flights were canceled so I cannot go home even the semester
ended yesterday. I felt helpless and anxious. I may have to stay on campus in the
summer. I miss my friends and family so much and I really want to go home. On the
campus, the gym and outdoor basketball court were locked. We couldn’t go anywhere
to exercise except running around the senior suite. I miss the gym so much. Luckily

the food is still good in Cheney, we can grab every day’s meals in the afternoon. Life
is not that bad but it’s really boring. I am still planning what to do in summer.

<text>Though this photo may seem simple and cute, the picture holds a deeper meaning. It shows that at home, we are exposed to a different space in which a stable work ethic is hard to achieve. Many homes are filled with love, life, and fun but when we chose or are forced to work in this environment, we are faced with the distractions that once brought us joy. This picture is a prime and personal example for what working at home meant to me. I was surrounded by things that brought me joy and fun when I needed to stay serious. With those who have pets, doing work in an environment that was accompanied by a furry friend who had a mind of their own was risky. At any moment they could distract you and take your mind away from work. It could turn from a neat desk to a chaotic clutter in a blink of an eye. This is what working during the pandemic looked like for me: Natalie Calo.</text>

Seeing how important and absolutely mandatory they were to allow us to go to school might be shocking and interesting to some people. Personally I thought masks would’ve been a thing of the past by now, but with the pandemic still in full swing, they’re still mandatory. We’ve been wearing them for such a long time that it’s become part of the routine to even leave my room. I’ve gotten used to every email including “wear your mask”, so it’s not bothersome anymore, just discouraging that it’s lasted so long. </text>

May 15, 2020
During This Time

It’s now May. The month I was looking forward to this year. It’s when classes ended,
spring began, and my birthday came. But I guess all my plans went down the drain. This isn’t
your typical “what happened to you during the coronavirus pandemic” paper; I guess I am
different. Unlike most of the students here, I am a commuter and a local. I couldn’t get away
from what was happening around Springfield, instead, I was submerged deep into it.
I am currently a junior in the Health Science major, so for me, this pandemic is a
wonderful, yet terrible learning experience. My professors all took this opportunity to implement
what we were learning in the current situation. As neighboring colleges decided to go online, I
dreaded Springfield College doing so as well. I couldn’t get away from home, at the end of the
day, I went home to my bed and slept, so school was the only other place I’d be. You’d find me
in the learning commons or the Union the most. For me, it was my haven away from home, a
place I could be alone and not controlled. But that too was taken away from me by the
coronavirus.
Having to stay home and remained home is hard for me. I share a room with my younger
sister and for both of us to try to school and share a room was simply impossible. It appears I
might just fail this semester. I felt all my efforts disappear and my determination with it. Going
online felt impossible with my course load. All my labs online, and language class online, how
was I going to do this? On top of this, my parents didn’t understand that I was supposed to be in
“school-mode” not “home-mode”. There was no clean line that separated the two mindsets. For
them, I was just home 24/7 and was able to answer all their calls. It was a hard switch online, to

have to keep motivated and determined to complete the semester. On top of this, most of my
teachers were new to our Brightspace system, thus going online was new to both of us. Towards
our finals, my brother was the one who gave me my determination once again.
My brother is currently a patient care technician at Baystate Medical Center here in
Springfield and a part-time student at Springfield Technical Community College. When the
pandemic started to get worse, my brother was pushed deeper into the hospital and had to treat
COVID-19 positive and negative patients. On top of this, he was keeping up with his course
work online and keeping safe from the virus. His constant push in the hospital and at school
inspired me to push through school and finish on a big note.
Being home was different now. My parents always tried to teach me something I had
already known and understood. They would tell me something different about the pandemic and
when I try to tell them otherwise, they tell me no and that I’m wrong. Last time I checked; I am
the one getting a degree in this. With this constant attitude for the last couple of months, I grew
an extra skin and pride in my major. Therefore, I wanted to go into health sciences, because of
no matter if the world was ending, public health and health care are always there.
The world did an amazing job responding, especially Vietnam. And yes, I am
Vietnamese-American, so I am extremely proud. However less proud of how the U.S. handled
itself in this situation. I felt more anger run through my body as I watched the news and
protesters go on and on. How could you fail humankind in such a time of need, where selfishness
is out in the open? I hope this pandemic can teach our government officials a lesson and the
citizens as well. There is no one way of doing things and everyone is missing information or are
too ignorant to except anything other than what they think is right.

This pandemic gave people a reason to point fingers and blame others. It gave people a
reason to be ignorant and selfish. It revealed the problems the United States had with their
response to this virus or the lack of response. It also revealed to me who I was as a person, where
my haven was, and just how much I missed being able to have books surrounding me while I do
my homework. I know that I have taken school for granted. The coronavirus pandemic became
our new normality for the time being, and that changed is needed to be done before we can go
back to the old days.
