<dcterms:coverage>Coronavirus has disrupted everyone’s lives and routines. We have all had to change the way we were living and doing things. Many have lost their jobs, or must work remotely. Most of us have been unable to see our friends. Although it is a difficult situation, it is temporary, and the best we can do right now is make the most out of it.

Coronavirus has left lots of us with time, and lots of it too. We can either sit around and wait it out, or be productive and take this time we have and do something with it. I am not the type of person who can sit around all day in my house; I have to be doing something. Social distancing has certainly made this difficult, but I have made the most out of it. The Springfield College community has also been making the most out of it, such as continuing traditions online and through social media.

One way I have been making the most out of the situation has been by going out on hikes and exploring trails across western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut. Social distancing does not mean completely disconnecting yourself from the world. On one of my hikes an older gentleman noticed I was wearing a Springfield College sweatshirt and he told me about how he graduated from Springfield almost 60 years ago and was sad that his reunion for this year was cancelled due to COVID-19 and we had a nice conversation about the college. On almost every one of my hikes, I’ve gotten the chance to talk to people (of course respecting physical distancing rules), I otherwise never would have encountered before and it has been interesting to hear about people in my community and how they are coping with the coronavirus crisis and social distancing.

I have attached a picture from one of my hikes up to Mount Holyoke. I chose to include this picture to capture how I have been spending my free time (and how I am not going completely insane) now that we have been working remotely.
<dcterms:coverage>The image I chose to portray how covid affected education is an image from my high school graduation. My school decided to do a drive-in style graduation, in a big parking lot by the water. We couldn’t have had a better night for it. Doing the ceremony outside gave everyone the chance to walk across stage and accept their diploma, all the while being socially distant. As president of my class, I had the opportunity to give a speech to my fellow classmates. As shown in the photo, I was basically speaking to a bunch of cars. It was very strange. I was unable to see the faces of my peers, but it was special nonetheless. It gave me the chance to say goodbye to everyone before we went our separate ways; something I was unable to do when we left on a random Friday. I feel like this graduation ceremony embodies the way my school handled Covid. It was no where near perfect, but they tried their best to make it as fun as possible. There was no way that the year could be “normal”. There were definitely many fails in their attempts to make it the best, but they still tried their hardest and that is all that matters in my opinion. My last semester of high school was definitely a let down, but it taught me to not take things for granted. Even if it’s just waking up at six in the morning to go to a long day of school. You will never realize what you miss until it’s gone.</dcterms:coverage>

And as the lockdown persisted, I saw many people either going into a more recessive state or using the newfound time to themselves to better themselves and learn new skills from cooking, drawing, making clothes, etc. At the time of me seeing this I had to make the choice of which way I would go with using my time. I had thought long and hard about what I was going to do until I had realized that I wanted to hone my skill of drawing. Throughout the lockdown I would interact with many forms of art from anime and manga and made art referencing the ones that had changed me as a person and allowed for me to prosper. In addition to this I had told myself that I wanted to inspire others to change their life and pursue their passions through the hard times, and so, anytime I would make a piece of art I would post it onto my instagram page with words of encouragement alongside my own thought process at the time of making it. These photos in the contribution make up some of my favorite works that I had made during the lockdown and only make up a small portion on the total works I made.</dcterms:coverage>

It started off with a general warning, perhaps not even a warning, but an informative email about a situation unfolding in the world. Fast forward a little over a month later, and the college starts having to make some big decisions that directly impact its students. A month later, education is fully online. These emails, and the time frame they convey, indicate the rapid nature by which the college was forced to react to the COVID-19 pandemic. I would hope that people looking at this document in the future would recognize the tone of the emails, and the way that our President handled the situation. She has been absolutely great throughout this whole crisis, and though she is having to deal with the weight of some unbelievably heavy decisions for the greater good of the community, she has done it with grace and with comforting words for the students that are being impacted the most. President Cooper's heart aches for the students, and that shows not only through her words, but her actions as well. </dcterms:coverage>

Next, Kolady goes on to speak of the sick time put in place. For the first time, part-time employees are now being offered 24 hours of paid leave. If a colleague has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher at the onset of their shift, they are allotted 72 hours of leave. However, working at an "essential business" during the pandemic allowed me to experience the many new regulations that continue to change the norms of every day life. On top of the changes addressed in this voicemail my city of employment, Chicopee, continued to implement more regulations to prevent the spread of the virus such as limits on purchases, regulation of what was being sold, reduced capacities of store, and reduced store hours. This calm, reassuring message displays a much different tone than what was experienced in the moment at these essential businesses. The urgency for personal protection led to expedited packages being shipped in multiple times a week in mass quantities rather than once a week yet there still remained a shortage all over the nation. Remaining open caused colleagues to adapt to new policy changes taking place almost each shift. It is questionable if some of the regulations such a plexiglass dividers will ever be lifted. The changes made during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to change the every day regularities we all once experienced and that is emphasized in this file. </dcterms:coverage>

When hearing about the COVID-19 outbreak and having to social distance, we were saddened that we couldn't hang out like normal anymore (as I imagine most friends were to hear this news). So to follow the social distancing rules, we decided we would FaceTime and do as we would if we were physically hanging out. As seen in the photograph, we were having lunch together and just enjoying the company, even if it is over the phone! I submitted this photo to demonstrate one of the many ways people could still hang out with their friends and respect the social distancing rule.</dcterms:coverage>

<dcterms:coverage>Why did I choose this photo: The reason I chose this image is because it is the location where I had to sit for approximately four hours, now let me tell you why. Due to COVID-19, to attend Springfield College, all students must have had their second vaccination dose two weeks before arriving on campus. For me that was not the case, I received my second dose about a week before arriving on campus. It had been a few days before move-in day. Springfield had sent an email out about students that had not been vaccinated for a full two weeks where required to show up on campus with a negative test result. I had been pretty excited about moving in and assumed that I had completed everything I needed, so I really didn’t pay much attention to that email. I had arrived on campus to the testing station and they explained to me that I needed a rapid COVID-19 test. They gave me a location that did rapid tests. Well it wasn't so “rapid”. My mother and I arrived at Urgent Care and they explained to us that there is a three hour wait because of how many other people were there for tests. I could imagine students from surrounding schools had the same issue which is why the wait was so long. Nevertheless, my mother and I waited three plus hours in the parking lot. I ended up missing the first day of the New Student Orientation due to the long wait for a rapid test and moving my things into my dorm room. </dcterms:coverage>

<dcterms:coverage>This photo is very different from most photos seen during this time. I'm sure seeing a photo of a large group of people together during this pandemic isn't very common anymore (this photo was taken before social distancing regulations were put in place). However, I chose to use this photo because of the significance behind it. The emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the students at Springfield College during this time is something that can never be captured by a photograph. However, this photo was taken on the last night students were allowed on campus. Earlier that day many sports teams had their seasons cancelled, and the outlook on the rest of the semester was dreary for everyone. We were all on edge, with no idea of what was to come next. But, one last time everyone came together to more or less say their goodbyes, and have a good time with friends. Although there was no official word from Springfield College about moving classes to an online platform, many seniors knew this night was their last night in college. Behind this photo, in the events that cannot be seen, are what make this image so significant to me. Everyone in this group has a different story; every person has their own experiences, had to say their own goodbyes to their friends, or is dealing with their own problems with online classes. However this captures everyone as a community one last time before the loneliness of quarantine set in. </dcterms:coverage>
