Due to the lockdown that started in March of 2020, many people around the world had seen their lives slow to a crawl in a matter of months, including my own. And as the lockdown persisted, I saw many people either going into a more recessive state or using the newfound time to themselves to better themselves and learn new skills from cooking, drawing, making clothes, etc. At the time of me seeing this I had to make the choice of which way I would go with using my time. I had thought long and hard about what I was going to do until I had realized that I wanted to hone my skill of drawing. Throughout the lockdown I would interact with many forms of art from anime and manga and made art referencing the ones that had changed me as a person and allowed for me to prosper. In addition to this I had told myself that I wanted to inspire others to change their life and pursue their passions through the hard times, and so, anytime I would make a piece of art I would post it onto my instagram page with words of encouragement alongside my own thought process at the time of making it. These photos in the contribution make up some of my favorite works that I had made during the lockdown and only make up a small portion on the total works I made.

Why did I choose this photo: The reason I chose this image is because it is the location where I had to sit for approximately four hours, now let me tell you why. Due to COVID-19, to attend Springfield College, all students must have had their second vaccination dose two weeks before arriving on campus. For me that was not the case, I received my second dose about a week before arriving on campus. It had been a few days before move-in day. Springfield had sent an email out about students that had not been vaccinated for a full two weeks where required to show up on campus with a negative test result. I had been pretty excited about moving in and assumed that I had completed everything I needed, so I really didn’t pay much attention to that email. I had arrived on campus to the testing station and they explained to me that I needed a rapid COVID-19 test. They gave me a location that did rapid tests. Well it wasn't so “rapid”. My mother and I arrived at Urgent Care and they explained to us that there is a three hour wait because of how many other people were there for tests. I could imagine students from surrounding schools had the same issue which is why the wait was so long. Nevertheless, my mother and I waited three plus hours in the parking lot. I ended up missing the first day of the New Student Orientation due to the long wait for a rapid test and moving my things into my dorm room.
Fresh Air When There's None Left
The images are pictures of nature and the outdoors, the water is running and the grass is swaying in the wind. The images are all things that I have personally taken while on hikes and backpacking trips during lockdown and the COVID pandemic.
In these images there are no people at all to be seen. This shows how quiet and nature is and how it differs from the world and the chaos going on during Covid-19.
I myself took all of these photos that are being used for the archive contribution.

I chose these photos because during times that were very hard for many and still are, it shows that there is still peace and tranquility. These pictures show that the world is still beautiful and that there is so much beauty in the world. Even when it may not seem like everything is okay, going into nature and just experiencing fresh air, the plants, and the wildlife, to me it makes everything seem okay. Nature helps me forget about the world for a little bit and all the stressors that come along with it. It helps me feel calm and safe.

I chose this video because of how accurately it represents the way the pandemic made me feel. This video is not to portray that people getting sick and dying and our health being at risk was paradise but more so that my mental state at the beginning of the pandemic was one of relief. To write this sentence does fill me with guilt but I have to admit that waking up and not going to school, or work, or worrying about anything was very peaceful. I felt in tune with myself and able to take care of myself in a way I hadn’t been able to in a long time. However, as the saying goes, “too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.” This was the case for the covid pandemic, overtime my days became very repetitive, online learning was extremely stressful and I felt trapped and stuck in my own home. I could not actively work on my goals and once 2 weeks turned into a few months I was ready to go back out into the world and for everything to go back to normal. The COVID pandemic taught me that we take the little things for granted and I've become a different person overall since the pandemic. Instead of forgetting my mask all the time like I did at the beginning, I now ask “do I need a mask?” before entering a building.
Kids on a hike
Kids hiking during covid for fun.
My submission is all photos of the outdoor memories I created with my buddies over covid. The bonds I created as a result of these trips are friendships that will last a lifetime, and I am so grateful to have met them in my life. Covid was dark for all of us in some way. Being away from my group of people for an extended period sparked my curiosity. Everyday I asked myself: how can I get outside and be with my friends while still having a good time and being safe? For a long time nothing was possible. Then, while I was scrolling through reddit, I came across a thread related to backpacking. I then proceed to wonder what a backpacking trip with all my friends would look like. Moments later I was texting them all about it, and 2 months later we’re in Yosemite exploring Angel’s Landing. These photos mean much to me because of the memories they have attached to them. I can confidently say that I wouldn’t be the person I am today had I not gone on that trip. Backpacking was an experience that brought us all together so much closer then we could have ever thought of. It is crazy to think that such a small thing can have such a large impact on life.

I am in the video taking the shot and my friends Michael Bell, Noah Chretien, and Benton Foglio’s voices can be heard in the background.
The video is of me on one of my first few trips out on the course which was one of the very few things I was allowed to do to leave the house. I had hit a high-slicing shot off the tee box and my ball ended up resting on the cart path. I hit the ball with a 4 iron right off of the cart path.

The reason I chose this video was that it was the best shot I had hit so far in my experiences golfing and the feeling I got was one of if not the best feeling I had felt since covid began. My mental state in covid wasn’t in the best place. Golf helped me clear my mind and it gave me a feeling of pure love and joy when I was out on the course. Golf gave me a chance to forget about the issues in the world and just enjoy life.

I chose this image because we were assigned to pick a moment from the pandemic that meant something to us. This image was taken last year at the start of my senior football season and the governor of my state Ned Lamont and the DPH made a decision that we could not play football while the pandemic was going on. The loss of my football season was one of the biggest moments of loss during the pandemic.

Cross country during COVID times
Rachel Yendluri, Julia Morville, Chloe Taylor
Cross Country; Sports;
This picture was taken when COVID was really bad so we had to run with masks. Although wearing masks while running was safer for everyone, wearing one while running was absolutely miserable. It seemed so much harder to breathe when wearing a mask. Thankfully we were allowed to slide our masks down when we were ten feet apart from someone else but if I wanted to catch up to someone, I would have to slide my mask back up. This was extremely hard because to catch up to someone you had to run faster which meant you would breathe harder. Wearing a mask while catching up to someone was the most miserable feeling. I felt like I could not run as fast with it.

I chose this string of emails because I feel like in the future masks won’t be something that’s thought about nearly as much as they are now. Seeing how important and absolutely mandatory they were to allow us to go to school might be shocking and interesting to some people. Personally I thought masks would’ve been a thing of the past by now, but with the pandemic still in full swing, they’re still mandatory. We’ve been wearing them for such a long time that it’s become part of the routine to even leave my room. I’ve gotten used to every email including “wear your mask”, so it’s not bothersome anymore, just discouraging that it’s lasted so long.

I chose to contribute this picture to the Springfield College Archives because the resting mask on James Naismith’s neck represents the forward progress the Springfield College community has made in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it doesn’t show full compliance to city/school mask mandates, Mr. Naismith is still technically following the rules because he is outside, and I believe he would have been fully vaccinated by now! This image is and will be relevant to every Springfield College student and staff member that was a part of campus life during the current COVID-19 pandemic (past, present, and future). This is right outside of the Springfield College Campus Union, the center of campus, where almost every individual on campus will pass by at least once a day. By complying with city and campus mask mandates, Naismith (and SC staff/students) is thoughtful of policy/leading by example, empathetic when keeping in mind that wearing a mask protects EVERYONE, and is trying to avoid going back to “Zoom University” or being sent home yet again.

I chose this email as my contribution because receiving this email went against my beliefs. No one in my household was vaccinated and I didn’t believe in taking the vaccine because during the two years Covid 19 started I didn’t get covid, so I didn’t see the purpose for getting the vaccine. The vaccine doesn’t stop you from getting covid it only helps with symptoms and my parents and I both were against the vaccine and they didn’t want me to take it either. However, in order to come on campus and live on campus it was required. In conclusion I thought that using this email would show how Covid basically made decisions for me and I didn’t really have a say in that decision even though it was my personal belief because I didn’t have a medical or religious exemption.

I chose these two photos because I thought it captured the celebratory moments of the end of high school and the start to a new beginning at college. My prom was very exciting because we didn’t have it junior year so it felt like the final time that my friends and I would get all dressed up to go out and dance and celebrate the end of high school together. Whereas the photo taken at the house shows the excitement for freshmen year as we were on one of the final days of NSO so that meant classes started very soon and so did freshmen year. And even though it’s hard to tell, everyone is smiling in the second photo under their mask just like in the first photo, full of happiness and eagerness to start a new adventure. Furthermore, I made many friends from my NSO group and so the comparison to four months ago where I only had two friends helps to depict the progression of growing up and going to college with no one else I knew, all on my own to having a group of friends. Therefore, the smile on my face was pure bliss that just like in high school I will find my friend group and be alright. It’s very hard to see my growth over the months but I believe these two photos help to show that my progression from teenager to adult is starting to bloom even during the unfortunate circumstances of COVID that I believe halted some of the progression from lack of being able to go out and experience life.
